  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

yeah, i watched the cavs play the newest, latest so-called beast of the east (aka boston) and they looked awful.

i cant see that changing much even with sideshow & sasha back in the line-up. sure its early, but they have a middle of the road vibe.

otoh, the new celtics are looking as real deal as they do on paper. it was interesting to see that line-up in action.

Howard an option for Cavs?

Monday, October 29, 2007

Branson Wright

Juwan Howard accepted a buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves last weekend, which could lead to Howard joining the Cavaliers prior to Wednesday's season opener against the Dallas Mavericks.  The opening day roster of 15 players must be set by 6 p.m. today.

Howard, according to league sources, spoke with the Cavs over the weekend about joining the club.  Howard is also considering Dallas and Boston.  Howard, a 6-9 and 253-pound forward, is a 15-year veteran.  He's an experienced low-post player the Cavs need especially while Anderson Varejao remains a holdout.

Howard, 34, has a career average of 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. He averaged 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds last year for the Rockets.

Cleveland Cavaliers acquire forward

The Cavs picked up Demetris Nichols off waivers today, according to a league source.  Nichols, put on waivers by the New York Knicks, was the player of the year in the Big East for Syracuse.  He led the Big East in scoring at just over 18 points per game.

Nichols, a 6-8 forward, has 3-point range on his jumper, but is not considered a banger inside.  Portland drafted Nichols in the second round (53rd overall) and traded his rights to the New York Knicks for a 2008 second round pick.  Nichols averaged 7.8 minutes in five preseason games.

Oct 30 - The Cavs acquired rookie forward Demetris Nichols off waivers from the New York Knicks on Monday.  To make room on the roster, the Cavs waived forward Noel Felix.  Anthony Tolliver, a rookie forward from Creighton, has made the Cavs' opening-night roster.  The Cavs are one of several teams who have expressed interest in veteran big man Juwan Howard, who was bought out of his contract by the Minnesota Timberwolves.  "I hope we can get him," LeBron James said. "We need another big man to play down low".

Coach Mike Brown said the Cavs would look into signing the 34-year-old Howard.  "Any time you can bring in a veteran like Juwan with his playing ability and character, you have to explore that," Brown said.  "I know there's talk about him getting a buyout (in Minnesota). If it does happen, you have to explore it." --

Cleveland Cavaliers finally come to terms with Pavlovic

Posted by mstarkey October 30, 2007 16:50PM

The Cavaliers today signed guard Sasha Pavlovic to a four-year deal, according to sources close to the situation.  Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao had missed all of training camp.  Pavlovic has been in his native Serbia throughout the holdout.

Pavlovic became a starter in the second half of last season and was instrumental in the Cavaliers run to the NBA Finals, where they lost to San Antonio.  He averaged 9.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last year in the regular season.

The Cavs open the regular season against Dallas on Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Pavlovic ends holdout, agrees to three-year deal with Cavs

By Chad Ford - ESPN.com

Updated: October 30, 2007, 5:11 PM ET

The Cleveland Cavaliers and restricted free agent Sasha Pavlovic have agreed to a three-year deal, Pavlovic's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com.  Cornstein refused to give the numbers on the contract.

"Sasha is very excited to be returning to the Cavs," Cornstein said. "I believe he can help the Cavs build on the success they had last year."

The two sides had been at a standstill for much of the summer.  Cornstein said that there was little movement until the last few days when Cleveland began to put a more serious offer on the table.  "Cleveland made great strides in the last few days to show how much they truely value Sasha and to ensure that we closed on this deal for the start of the season," Cornstein said.

Deal Finally Done

From: ESPN Insider

Oct 31 - Marc Cornstein declined to give the contract figures, but league sources said the deal is for three years and averages between $4 million and $5 million per season.  According to insiders, the Cavs were willing to increase what they were offering Pavlovic in the first two years of the deal, but the third year of the pact is not fully guaranteed, which gave the Cavs the flexibility they were seeking in the talks with both Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao.  Because of those terms, both sides were able to claim a victory after they'd been entrenched.

Oct 31 - The Cavs don't seem very interested in point guard Beno Udrih, who was traded to Minnesota and waived on Monday. He is suffering from a broken finger.  In order to sign Sasha Pavlovic, the Cavs likely will waive forward Anthony Tolliver to get to 15 players.

Happy For Sasha

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 1 - Cavaliers forward LeBron James is happy for his teammate that he was finally rewarded financially. Swingman Sasha Pavlovic signed a three-year, $12 million contract during Wednesday's game.

"It's a good thing that it happened," James said. "I'm excited for him that he's able to get some security around himself for the first time in a while." "We're a better team," James said. "We have another guy that can slash and can shoot and defend. He showcased his defensive skills in the playoffs last year and once he gets back into shape things will be even better."

Cleveland Cavaliers pick up option on Cedric Simmons, decline option on Shannon Brown

Posted by From staff reports November 01, 2007 14:38PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have exercised the third-year contract option on forward Cedric Simmons, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today.  Simmons' extension keeps him under contract with the Cavaliers through the 2008-09 season. In 43 career games (four starts), he has averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Originally selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, Simmons was acquired by the Cavaliers from the Hornets on September 29 in exchange for David Wesley.

The Cavaliers have declined to exercise the third-year option on guard Shannon Brown.  Brown has played in 24 career games (five starts) and has averaged 3.0 points per game.  Brown was the 25th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Cavaliers.

Another Hit

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 5 - The Cavaliers' big-man rotation keeps taking hits.  Anderson Varejao is famously absent over contract matters.  Offseason pickup Cedric Simmons is recovering from an ankle injury, and now Donyell Marshall is out of action for an undetermined period.

The Cavs have shut Marshall down for at least a week with a right wrist injury.  The Cavs are saying it is sprained and are calling him day-to-day.  He missed his first game Sunday against the Phoenix Suns.

Cleveland Cavaliers aren't interested in one-year deal for Varejao

Posted by Branson Wright

November 06, 2007 15:35PM

A published report says that Anderson Varejao would be willing to return to the Cavaliers for one season at the mid-level of exception of about $5.3 million.  The Cavs say they want to sign Varejao but it doesn't appear they want to sign him for just one season.  A one-year deal for Varejao means he becomes a unrestricted free agent next summer and the Cavs would rather sign him to a multi-year deal or get value for him in a trade.

Good Start To Long Season

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 6 - When Zydrunas Ilgauskas is asked about the hot start to his season -- he's averaging 15.7 points and 14.3 rebounds, the fourth most in the NBA -- he responds with a series of one-liners.

''I'm a fairly good rebounder for my size.''

''It's the shaved head; my hair isn't holding me back anymore.''

''We have not been shooting well; there's a lot of balls bouncing around.''

But along with knowing how to charm questioners, the veteran knows the reality, too. It's a long season, and three games mean nothing. And his numbers are largely due to an increased minute load, which he knows could have consequences down the line.

Hughes Struggling

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 6 - Larry Hughes is averaging 7.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He's shooting 27.3 percent (9-of-33) from the field. Of course, three games don't make a season, but after five games last season, his numbers were 16.4 points, 45.2 percent shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

This season was supposed to see Hughes grow more comfortable with the point guard role he assumed in the final third of last season. Hughes worked over the summer with former Cavs guard Mark Price. Either Hughes is having a slow start, or the price on Price was not right.

"It's about finding a rhythm," said Hughes, who was 3-of-9 for six points against the Suns. "I'm not real fond of playing the [point guard] the whole time and that has a little to do with it. But I guess I have to find a way to figure things out."

Much To Do About Nothing

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 7 - The latest chapter in the Anderson Varejao fiasco is much to do about nothing.  A "league source" told SI.com that Varejao, who has missed the entire preseason and the first four regular-season games in a contract holdout, would be willing to accept a one-year offer from the Cavaliers worth at least the mid-level exception ($5.3 million).

If they agreed to a one-year contract, Varejao would be able to walk away at the end of the year and they would get nothing in return.  He's too valuable a player to allow him to walk at the end of the season.

Varejao had the option of taking a one-year contract, known as a qualifying offer, by an Oct. 1 deadline.  Had he accepted it, he would've been an unrestricted free agent next summer.  That offer was for $1.2 million under the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.  According to sources, once that offer expired, the Cavs became unwilling to sign Varejao to any sort of one-year deal.

so where are you cavs fans coming down on this?

a) Verajo is a snot nosed little whiny player who hasn't "earned it" on the court to be a hold out.

b) danny ferry is a cheapo

or whatever........

Varejao has to realize he is not worth all that money. As a fan I'd say Verajao is a whining and needs to get back to Cleveland.

Varejao isn't worth starter money.  Plain and simple.

Webber Would Consider Cavs

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 9 - It has been reported by several media outlets that free-agent forward Chris Webber would only consider his hometown Detroit Pistons.  According to a source close to Webber, though, he would also consider signing with the Cavs if the role was right.  The Cavs are depleted in the frontcourt with Anderson Varejao missing and with Donyell Marshall out with injury.

Still Adjusting

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 9 - Devin Brown, 28, said he was just trying to find his niche in the preseason when he shot 19.5 percent from the field (8 of 41). He's a little more accurate in the regular season, but it's still off.

"Once the season starts, everything flows," he said.  "In the preseason, you take some bad shots which throw everything off. Once the season gets started, there's more concentration. I was feeling things out in the preseason, trying to figure out where my shots were coming from and to see where I fit in with this new system."

Varejao Breaks Silence

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 12 - In an interview with a Spanish-language Web site Marca.com published Sunday, Anderson Varejao made his first public comments since the end of the season.  He believes there have been inaccurate reports about his contract demands and his physical condition.

''I have seen the news on my person and on my situation and it seems to me absurd much of what is said,'' Varejao said, via a computerized translation.  ''The details, the amounts of my contract, the suppositions, they are not correct.  I have been training here in Brazil twice a day during the pre-Olympic tournament, the preseason and now the regular season.  I desire for my fans and the team to know that I want to play and that I want an agreement that's fair for both parties.''

Days Numbered?

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 12 - Cavaliers insiders are starting to believe Eric Snow 's days in Cleveland are numbered.  Before undergoing knee surgery, Snow sold his house in Cleveland and returned to his family's home base in Atlanta.  After joining up with the Cavs for two games of their West Coast trip last week, he went back home to Atlanta citing personal reasons.

The suspicion is he will ask the Cavs to buy him out of the two remaining years of his contract, which he hopes would allow him to sign with the Hawks.  That might be a problem, though, since he stands to make $6.7 million this year and $7.3 million next year.

Eric Snow said his knee is healthy enough to play again but he's going to take it slow. He wants to get some practice time to test out his knee and get into shape after missing all of training camp after surgery to repair a torn meniscus.  Due to the Cavs long road trip and his absence from the team for three days to deal with personal matters, Snow has basically had only one practice all season.  With the glut of guards, Snow might not be assured minutes if he was healthy right now anyway.

Not Under Consideration

From: ESPN Insider

Nov 14 - Talk has circulated that the Cavaliers were working on a buyout of veteran point guard Eric Snow's contract.  His agent, Steve Kauffman, said that's not the case.  "There was never any serious consideration to a buyout," he said.

According to a source, the Cavs have no interest in buyout talks, either.  The Cavs have had trade talks involving Snow, including with the Hawks, a source said, but nothing is imminent.  Next year, in the final year of Snow's contract, when he's to be paid $7.3 million, he probably will become a key trading asset for the Cavs.

Cavaliers guard Larry Hughes to miss at least month with leg bruise

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

November 16, 2007

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cavaliers guard Larry Hughes will miss at least four weeks with a bruised left leg, yet another setback for the fragile player and the defending Eastern Conference champions.  Hughes hurt his leg during a Nov. 4 game at Phoenix when he collided with Suns guard Leandro Barbosa.

He missed three games and was still experiencing discomfort on Tuesday night, when he left an overtime loss against Orlando in the fourth quarter complaining of pain.  Hughes was 2-for-12 from the field when he limped to the bench.  The team said tests revealed a deep bone bruise and estimated a four-week treatment period before Hughes could resume basketball activities.

The Cavaliers, who will host the Utah Jazz on Friday, are missing Donyell Marshall (wrist) and Eric Snow (knee surgery), two key contributors from last season. Cleveland's frontline is also without forward Anderson Varejao, a restricted free agent who remains unsigned.

If i ever meet Tom Withers in person, I am going to punch him the face for being an idiot.

The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Hughes, who signed a five-year $60 million free agent contract with Cleveland in 2005, has spent a large chunk of his career on the sideline with an assortment of injuries.

^ Good lord... I just want to weep uncontrollably whenever I read... Hughes - $60 mill - injuries... all in the same sentence.

I can't get over the fact that he's 6'5" and ONLY 185 lbs. He should be at least at 200-210, and that's low. No wonder he's not durable, he's only skin and bones.

^ Indeed, I'm 10 pounds heavier than him yet a foot shorter (all muscle of course  :-D)

Cavs season is going to come down to this.. can guys like Devin Brown, Shannon Brown, Cedric Simmons, etc contribute.  Because Hughes is worthless, their starting line-up is fine, it comes down to bench.  If Varejao comes back at any point, he's gonna be so out of shape he won't help much.  The positive thing is that at least we can see what these young guys have in them.

Totally agree... we definantly need more production off of our bench.  I like what I'm seeing out of Devin Brown and Cedric Simmons looks like he's got some potential.  The guys off the bench have got to be more productive in the long run; I'd really like to see a little more of Shannon Brown.

I love what I've seen out of Simmons in terms of raw talent so far.. however, with that said.. HIT THE GYM.. he's 6'9" and is as built as a 12 year old.  If he can put muscle on during the off-season, he could be a good player.

Cavs Have Their Own 'Big Three'

From: ESPN Insider

When you say ''Big Three'' around the NBA these days, most assume you're talking about the Boston Celtics' newly assembled core of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.  But the Cavaliers have their own impressive trio performing at a high level and against overall much better competition than the Celtics have faced.

Heading into Sunday's games, LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden were combining to average 59.5 points, 30 rebounds and 10.3 assists.  Almost as good as the Celtics' Big Three, who put their numbers together to average 62 points, 22.6 rebounds and 13.3 assists.

The Miller Rumor

From: ESPN Insider

Cleveland is desperate for a starting point guard to help LeBron James, and if the Cavs don't get anywhere soon in their negotiations with their free agent, Anderson Varejao (the two sides are a million miles apart), Billy King should see if there's some way Varejao would come down from his ridiculous $10-million-a-year demands and take a reasonable contract that the Cavs could put in a package. For, say, Miller. -- Philadelphia Inquirer

Depth A 'Big' Issue

From: ESPN Insider

The Cavs have maintained contact with free-agent big men Dale Davis, Vitaly Potapenko and Alan Henderson but aren't yet ready to pull the trigger. They'd prefer not to release a player with a guaranteed contract or let go of prospect rookie Demetris Nichols, the only player on the team with a nonguaranteed deal.

Anderson Varejao remains unsigned, Donyell Marshall is out indefinitely with a wrist issue, and Cedric Simmons is dealing with his fourth left ankle injury in the past year. The only true big man on the bench is Dwayne Jones, who was their sixth big man last year and didn't even come to training camp with a guaranteed contract.

''It terms of true big men we are skating a little thin,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said. ''Right now (adding another player) is not feasible, it could be later. We have to keep our fingers crossed and hope nothing happens to the guys we have left.''

Marshall Out 6-8 Weeks

From: ESPN Insider

Cavaliers forward Donyell Marshall today completed a period of additional examination and evaluation for his sprained right wrist. The initial treatment of rest and immobilization for 7-10 days was step one and has been completed.

After additional opinions and evaluations were gained, step two started today with a cortisone shot to the impacted area of his wrist.  A period of further immobilization, and then rehab to promote healing and resolution of his symptoms, will now commence.  It is estimated that the complete treatment and rehab process will take 6-8 weeks starting today.  Donyell will be listed as Out during that time period and his status will be updated as appropriate.

Varejao on Cleveland: 'I don't want to play there anymore'

Monday, November 26, 2007

By Chad Ford - ESPN.com

Last season, Anderson Varejao played a key role as the Cleveland Cavaliers won the Eastern Conference title -- he was arguably the Cavs' best young player behind LeBron James.  This season, Varejao is playing in a gym more than a thousand miles from Cleveland in Vitoria, Brazil, while the Cavs struggle to replace Varejao's defensive intensity in the middle.

What's he doing? Working on his jump hook. Trying to stay in shape. And most importantly, waiting.  He's waiting for the lucrative contract he thought he'd sign this offseason.  And waiting for Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry to "show me that he values my contribution to the team," Varejao told ESPN.com by phone in a rare interview.  "I just want to be treated fairly and I don't think Danny's done that."

Varejao expected to be helping the Cavs defend their East crown by now.  "I wanted to come back," he said. "I love the fans and I really love my teammates. But there are others there that have made it very difficult. It's gotten to the point that I don't want to play there anymore. I'm just hoping for a sign-and-trade at this point."

^ My opinion: Screw this guy, sign and trade his selfish ass.

How about the Cavs taking it to the Celtics tonight! LeBron is just off the hook! This team is going to be all right! It still needs some help in order to win it all. The Celtics will be tough to beat in a 7 game series. Unless we can get some more magic, it's going to be tough.

Varejao Irks Some Cavs

There was already a little uneasiness with Anderson Varejao, because he seemed to be betting on the Cavs getting off to a poor start to drive up his value.  That's a bit of a gray area.  But the quote on ESPN.com, in which he belittled some of his teammates' performances, wasn't.  The statement irked some Cavs, many of whom already have been scratching their heads over the process.

''I think it rubbed some of us the wrong way. One of the things you don't do in this league is compare your situation to someone else because everybody is different,'' one Cavs player said.  ''I almost don't believe he said it because earlier in the article he says he loves his teammates.''

Trade Talk?

Coach Pat Riley said the Heat aren't looking into a potential trade for Cavaliers restricted free agent forward Anderson Varejao.  Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, reportedly has asked Cleveland to work out a sign-and-trade deal.  ''We know what's going on out there,'' Riley said Tuesday. "I'm sure there's frustration on the part of both people. But we haven't had any conversations about that."

Big win for the Cavs against the Celts.  Nice to see 'our' big 3 step it up in a big win.

My thoughts on Andy... bye, bye.  I don't know what him and his agent are thinking, but I don't feel bad at all about not grossly overpaying this guy.  Hey Andy, here's a thought, ever heard of earning your worth?  Your worth about what the Cavs are willing to give you, you still have yet to earn what your asking for.

I called this about a week ago talking to a buddy at work, we won't see Andy in a Cavs uni again.
