www.cleveland.com is doing a good job with coverage of the Shaq trade.  They've devoted an entire top banner to it.

By the way I HIGHLY doubt we could land rubio... I just found it interesting we are looking to get as high as 10

Orlando just answered.  Reports are that Alston, Battie and Courtney Lee are headed to NJ for Vince Carter.

On second thought, this might be Orlando throwing in the towel on any hopes of resigning Turkoglu, who honestly scares me more than an aged-Vinsanity.

CLEVELAND, OH - June 25, 2009 - The Cleveland Cavaliers selected guard/forward Christian Eyenga with the 30th overall pick and guard/forward Danny Green with the 46th overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft.

“Christian is very athletic and shoots the ball very well. He has the potential to be a good NBA player. We are excited to work with him, to see his development and help him grow as a player and a person,” Ferry said. “Danny Green is a good basketball player and competitor. He knows how to win.”

Do you know how few youngin's have no idea what you're talking about? Allow me to take this thread off topic for just one message by encouraging forumers to read an article I wrote on the 25th anniversary of Greene's killing....

Cleveland Cavaliers' Shaquille O'Neal thrilled to now be a Cavalier

by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter

Friday June 26, 2009, 12:24 AM

Shaquille O'Neal was his usual blunt and stylish self in stating his new mission as a Cavalier.  He wants to be the "first to five."  As in five championships.  And first before former teammate and chronicled rival Kobe Bryant, who picked up his fourth championship ring with the Lakers earlier this month.

Shaq deal is marketing (wine and) gold

By JOEL HAMMOND

It didn’t take long for the Cavaliers’ marketing and merchandising departments to mobilize after news broke late Wednesday night of Shaquille O’Neal’s impending arrival in Cleveland.

After all, they’ve had plenty of experience in quick turnarounds.

by Starting Blocks, The Plain Dealer

The Cleveland Cavaliers' new No. 33 jersey, to be worn by Shaquille O'Neal, is now available for sale online. It can be found at NBAStore.com in the customized authentic or replica jersey sections on the Cavaliers jersey page.

ANyone excited for Wednesday?  Thats when we will know who we are going to spend our remaining 5.6 million on.  I think its going to be another solid game changer.  Im thinking along the lines of Villanueva, Anthony Parker, or Rasheed (as much as you hate Rasheed, with him and Shaq nobody would ever come into the paint.)

windhorst was on the radio yesterday and mentioned that if vilanueva is non tendered (possible) he could be a cav by the end of the week... he mentioned the other likely targets (nothing shocking) sheed, parker, and barnes...  and he said if they can't do what they'd like to do via free agency they would probably target channing frye via trade.

As much as some people don't like Sheed, you gotta admit that he has a true passion for the game.  I can't even imagine a team with Bron, Shaq, and Sheed.  That would be one strong team.

Honestly, Dwight Howard may never get 10 points if SHeed and Shaq were in the middle. Unreal.

Villanueva was just non tendered by the bucks... Now unrestricted.

Windhorst always has good comments:

The Cavs have Shaq; so what is the impact?

by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter Thursday June 25, 2009, 12:43 AM

Nice analysis.  I'm hopeful about this trade.  Successful or not, at least this trade shows the team's willingness both to keep LeBron and to win.  This kind of big move is great for Cleveland and for Ohio.

Shaq news conference on Thursday

Published: Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Staff Reports

Shaquille O'Neal will be introduced as the newest Cavalier in a news conference on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

O'Neal was acquired just before last week's draft in a trade with the Suns for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic.

I see Andy Varejao didn't exercise the option on his contract and is now a free-agent. That's not good.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

That was very much expected.

I see Andy Varejao didn't exercise the option on his contract and is now a free-agent. That's not good.

It makes financial sense for him and should not be taken as a statement that he wants to leave.  The final year of his contract was for $6.2 mill I believe.  His value on the market will probably be at least comparable to that figure.  His interests are served by securing a multi-year deal now after a season in which he was a key contributor on a 66 win team and is still young.  His value might never be higher.

I personally think that bringing back Andy should be priority #1 for Ferry this summer.  Unlike Hickson and Jackson, he can play both the 4 and the 5.  There will be certain teams that we might be forced to play small ball with and you need a guy like Andy to do that.  But more important are two other considerations.  First, his hustle and tenacity is infectious and sometimes game-changing.  He easily gets us a handful of extra possessions nearly every game in ways that don't show up on stat sheets.  And second, nobody has more of a rapport with LBJ in terms of on-court chemistry.  Andy knows exactly when and where to set the pick and is uncanny with his cuts to the basket for one of the King's dimes.

I say re-sign Andy, bring in McDyess on a 1 yr. deal to start at PF alongside Shaq and then sign Matt Barnes to fill the shoes of Wally/Sasha off the bench.  Nothing too fancy, but realistic (unlike the scenarios you might read on other forums) assuming McDyess is willing to accept the bi-annual exception for a shot at a ring.  Shaq was our sexy pick-up for the summer and now we need to secure the role players necessary for another run at a title.

PG - Williams/Gibson

SG - West/Barnes/Kinsey

SF - Lebron/Green

PF - McDyess/Varejao/Hickson

C - Shaq/Z

Does anyone know what teh Cavs 08-09 and 09-10 payroll is? Ive been searching and I cant seem to find an exact number. Ive found anywhere from 65 - 90 mil.

LeBron James attending prestigious conference with Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert

by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter

Tuesday July 07, 2009, 12:50 PM

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James will be spending some time with friend Warren Buffett at the prestigious Allen & Company media industry conference in Sun Valley, Idaho.

But it wasn't Buffett who got James and LRMR Marketing CEO Maverick Carter the invite to the ultra-elite five-day conference that has been labeled as "summer camp for billionaires." It is a place for executives and movers and shakers in the media industry to share ideas and sometimes strike major deals.

Im glad we re-signed Andy. At 27 I think he has a strong upside. And although I wish Parker were 3 inches taller, it looks like a good pick-up.

Anderson Varejao agrees to 6-year deal with Cleveland Cavaliers, who also add guard Anthony Parker

by Brian Windhorst / Plain Dealer Reporter

Wednesday July 08, 2009, 10:48 PM

UPDATED: 11:07 p.m.

Tracy Boulian / The Plain Dealer

Anderson Varejao.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers have made their big moves in free agency.

After making a splash by trading for Shaquille O'Neal, the Cavs have come to terms with one of their core players and are close to adding a key piece.

The Cavs have agreed on a new contract with forward Anderson Varejao, agent Dan Fegan said Wednesday. In addition, a league source said the Cavs have come to terms on a deal for free agent guard Anthony Parker. He could complete the that deal within the next few days...continue reading------->>>>

I've seen reports that Andy's deal is for 6 yr 50 mill.  A little less than 8.5 mill per yr.  Pretty high numbers for a player best used as the 3rd big man.  However, I would suspect that there is some frontloading and backloading (probably more of the latter) in the contract to maximize flexibility for next summer.

Considering the contracts that comparable players such as Villanueva (5/35) and "Birdman" Anderson (5/25) signed, there will be a lot of talk that we spent too much on Andy.  Honestly, I thought we could have got him for less, but I am not terribly dissappointed.  Villanueva is more talented, but has 1/10 the heart and can only play one position.  Birdman is 31 yrs old and is one joint/rock/rail/etc. from being out of the league permanently.

I was never really worried about losing Andy to another NBA team, but I had a bad feeling that the Euro clubs were going to make a push for him if we did not pony up some $$$.

I want the andy wig...

There are a lot of incentives in the deal... essentially it's a 6 yr 42m contract... and the 6th year isn't fully guaranteed.  So really it's a 5 yr 35m deal with a team option for the 6th yr and a buyout.  That is actually right about where i thought we'd get him.  I think he has to make the all star team every year of the contract to reach the 50m.  Good luck with that.  :)

After all the free agent talk about Wallace, Artest, Ariza, etc... and this is what we end up with?  This draws a big fat yawn from me.  But I am happy to see Andy was signed... he's a unique asset and should compliment Shaq well.

I actually REALLY like Anthony Parker.  I want to know what his contract is.

Damn, that dude is old! Looks like his best years were spent in the European league. With just 10-12 ppg for 30 minutes, he sounds inconsistent like Wally or Booby.

I see his natural position is shooting guard, but he can also play point guard when called upon. If he can play PG well, I would much rather see him back up Mo Williams than Booby! But coming off the bench will help keep his aging legs fresh.

I heard it was going to be for 6 mill over 2 years.

I like the signing... especially a those numbers, but make no mistake that he has lost a step.  I am curious as to what his role will be though.  I doubt he is going to supplant Delonte in the starting lineup.  And if Boobie's toe heals and he is back to form, it will be interesting to see who is the first guard off the bench.

Shaq in China right now...I wonder if it has anything to do with the new proposed Chinese management, or simply more promotion in the China market...or both.  Written from the Chinese perspective.

NBA star feeling 'Buddha blessed'

Martial arts have been an interest of Shaquille O'Neal, and he paid an emotional visit Monday to the Shaolin Temple in Henan province.

"I've been a lot of places but being at the Shaolin Temple has brought a tear to my eye. Buddha blessed," the NBA superstar center wrote on his blog.

I've heard a rumor that Shaq met with northside lofts management over penthouses last week. Any truth to this?

Northside lofts?  Where is that and how would we know?

i googled it, looks like downtown Akron.

why would he want to drive to akron after home games, practice and when returning to Burke/Hopkins after road games?

I was thinking the exact same thing.
