July 7, 201014 yr Well, I think the chances of Lebron going to Chicago, NYN, and NJN have just diminished greatly since the package deal with Chris Bosh or Dwayne Wade has been elimnated. I'd say, in order, the most likely now are: Cleveland Miami Chicago I don't think Lebron wants to play with Amare in New York, and there would be no talent with him in New Jersey. Now methinks that James will remain a Cav.... With an impending annoucement on ESPN, if he wasn't re-signing with the Cavs I think a leak to that effect would already be out. Windhorst tweeted this morning that LBJ's inner circle doesn't even know where he's going. I think, if he's even made a decision, that he and his agent know, and that's probably it. If anything good comes out of this, I hope it's that the whole 'world wide wes' phenomenon is completely debunked. That guy (and Jalen Rose) said it was a done deal that LBJ and bosh were going to Chicago. HA! Suckers.
July 7, 201014 yr I don't think lebron is going to Miami because he doesn't want to be a follower. Miami is Dwane Wade's town and lebron knows it. Lebron wants to bring people where he goes.
July 7, 201014 yr Who knows WHAT Lebron will do... but IMO Miami may be where he bolts to (if he does leave). He's said repeatedly that "it's not about the money", and that he "wants to win". Pat Riley, Dwade, and Bosh- that might be a little too hard to turn down. We're Clevelanders- we should know by now to hope for the best, but expect the worst when it comes to sports in this town.
July 7, 201014 yr I don't think lebron is going to Miami because he doesn't want to be a follower. Miami is Dwane Wade's town and lebron knows it. Lebron wants to bring people where he goes. That's the problem, he can't get anyone to follow him to Cleveland. If basketball season was in the summer, maybe a typical NBA player would want to live in Ohio 7-8 months out of the year, but not October-March. He's gone, he's going to Miami..

Lets not start panicking, 8 titles...He is prob NOT going to Miami, They only have 2 players currently on contract and Wade and Bosh will take up most of their salary cap room. Its prob going to be Cleveland or NY, I would say its 60/40 Cleveland right now, hiring Byron Scott might have been our saving grace. We will see

July 7, 201014 yr DAMMIT I hate that we're being put through this. This whole ordeal has been really, REALLY irritating for me as a Cavs fan. As loyal as the fans of the Cavaliers have been to Lebron, this hype ordeal has been a really sh!tty thing to put the fans through. Rant over. Anyone know the amount of cap space the Heat will have left over if they sign Dwade, Bosh and LBJ to max contracts? I don't even know if that would be possible. Even if it were, who the heck else do you sign to play on the team? It isn't like they can pick a Rondo off of a tree...
July 7, 201014 yr ^ they did something to that effect on ESPN of Wade Bosh and LBJ all signing maxes, they would have just a few thousands dollars left to fill 8 roster spots. Now, they are allowed to go over the cap by signing players at the league minimum, but that senario seems very, very unlikely.
July 7, 201014 yr They can't. The Heat have roughly 40m in salary cap space. starting max contract i believe will be in the $17m range, and i "think" higher for wade since he will be resigning with the heat. So either lebron would have to play for slightly more than the mid level exception or all these guys would have to sign for about $13m each. Which means they would all be leaving somewhere between $40-50m on the table over the life of the contract. I still just don't see that. Then there is this. The Heat have THREE players under contract. THREE. Which means if they sign all three of these guys it is Wade, LeBron, and Bosh vs the world, with a bunch of league minimum NBDL types. Then factor in the egos involved. This D Wades team and city and LeBron will never get the "credit" if they win, it will be about some sort of dream team. And if they don't win, those three will be crucified as the biggest losers of all time. It makes sense for bosh to take the max and with no income tax in fla, and a chance to play with wade and have at least SOME money left over to at least complete a roster. But I can't see these guys leaving that much on the table, and all figuring out who is the alpha dog.
He couldn't get free agents to come here before because they didn't know that he himself was committed (see Trevor Ariza). Bosh has delusions of grandeur about turning into a celebrity in a big market, which is why he wanted to go to a place like Miami. However other solid guys like Mike Miller, David Lee, heck even a Chris Paul, would probably have no problem playing here assuming LeBron makes a commitment. That's why it's so important for LeBron to sign a six year deal if he stays here. Doing so would really make Cleveland more attractive to potential free agents.
July 7, 201014 yr Chris Bosh...7 seasons, 1 2nd team All NBA, 0 All defensive teams, 211-320 team record all time, 3-8 in playoffs. Who cares. There's 0% chance he's going to Miami. It hurts his brand. The NBA markets players (not teams) and Lebron wants nothing more than to market himself. The Showtime Lakers were Magic's team, even with Kareem and Worthy. The Celtics were Bird's team even with McHale and Parish. There can only be 1 alpha dog, and its been pretty clear that LeBron wants to maintain complete control. At this point, I would be pretty surprised if he left.
July 7, 201014 yr "The program will have sponsors and the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club of America, the statement said. James has supported that charity in the past during events over various All-Star Weekends." I do think it's kind of cool that his "decision" will bring in a lot of money for charity
July 7, 201014 yr Bosh has delusions of grandeur about turning into a celebrity in a big market, which is why he wanted to go to a place like Miami. Somebody should have told him that Miami and Cleveland are nearly identical in "market size" I think Miami is #17 and Cleveland is #18. Less than a 20,000 TV households difference. http://www.tvb.org/rcentral/markettrack/us_hh_by_dma.asp Also, he should have considered that Miami shares the State of Florida with Orlando, whereas the Cavs are the only NBA team in Ohio. No competing with Cincy for C-Bus's market. Nor are there teams in Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Therefore, other markets which Cleveland sports usually has to share, such as Youngstown and Erie, are not divided.
July 7, 201014 yr its down to miami vs cle now That will change 5 times before he actually announces. Bulls are still extremely confident they are in the game.... although not being able to get Bosh hurts their chances. There is some alleged Nike "insider" who claims that if LBJ is not a Knick on Thursday, then somebody at Nike was lied to. Someone also leaked a picture of what is supposed to be boxes of orange witness shirts at some Nike storage facility. Most rival executives feel that LBJ is returning, albeit maybe only for 2-3 years. Cavs front office are supposedly very confident that James will stay home. Rumors are flying everywhere and probably 85%-90% is nothing more than pure speculation.... reading the tea leaves kind of thing
July 7, 201014 yr I'd bet a lot of it is just people putting out anything so they can cash in on the click gold rush that is going on. The staff bloggers have to justify their existence and create their brand just like those that they're covering.
July 7, 201014 yr despite lebron's pleads and the cavaliers being the better team, bosh snubbing cle isnt helping things.
July 7, 201014 yr its down to miami vs cle now Well whoever it is, I'm sure the Cav's front office already knows.
July 7, 201014 yr this is starting to look bad, according to brians windhorst (cavs beat writter) his little one hour shin-dig tomorrow is being held in Greenwich, CT....A suburb of NYC
July 7, 201014 yr this is starting to look bad, according to brians windhorst (cavs beat writter) his little one hour shin-dig tomorrow is being held in Greenwich, CT....A suburb of NYC Smokescreen? Creating suspense. If I've learned anything from this process, don't read too much into anything, because it's probably meaningless (if not intentionally part of a misdirection effort).
July 8, 201014 yr I'm not one to think athletes can really do anything substantial for a city, but Cleveland fans have a legit "how could he do this to us" coming if James leaves. The thing is, they aren't making any moves in the FA market themselves to help him out, so WTF?
July 8, 201014 yr He's staying. Think about what he named his show tomorrow - "The Decision" Now think back to that quote from him they played all playoffs where he recalled Cleveland sports misery as "The Fumble, The Drive, The Shot, The Jose Mesa Debacle in the bottom of the 9th" Knowing that him leaving would get added right to the end of that list, does anybody think he has the audacity to provide a name for it?? And Clevelander17 is right that it is all about creating the suspense at this point. Everytime you think a team is out of it, rumors start swirling that causes the team to regain momentum in the gossip blogs of the sports websites. Well... everybody except the Clippers. Everyone knows he won't go there as long as Sterling owns the team.
July 8, 201014 yr NewsChannel5 has learned LeBron James filed for an address change for his taxes to an address in Chicago, according to documents through the Summit County Auditor's website. We have not been able to verfiy when this request was filed. Where does this stuff come from?
July 8, 201014 yr Cher sings to Cleveland...... Do you believe in life after LeBron...LeBron... LeBron.... I honestly think he's going to split. Him telling of his decision is like breaking it off with a girlfriend of a long time... Its a tough one, but he knows he has to do it. Hope That's the wrong hunch, though.
July 8, 201014 yr The thing is, they aren't making any moves in the FA market themselves to help him out, so WTF? What serious talent FA in their right mind would sign with Cleveland before Lebron decides to stay or go?
July 8, 201014 yr I can imagine Lebron leaving. I just can't imagine him creating a national stage (tomorrow night's one-hour special) where he rips out Cleveland's heart for all to see. Does he realize what he might be doing?
July 8, 201014 yr Chris Bosh...7 seasons, 1 2nd team All NBA, 0 All defensive teams, 211-320 team record all time, 3-8 in playoffs. Who cares. There's 0% chance he's going to Miami. July 8, 201014 yr More hype from "sources". We'll have to wait until 9:57 tonight for his decision (which is a farce to begin with- it doesn't take an hour to say "I'm gonna go to _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. I don't know if all will be forgiven with the local public if he stays... that is of course unless he actually is able to win a championship). I can't remember a sports icon in this city who is as revered as Bron. If he DOES decide to go to Miami, with his I'm-oh-so-important hour long special on ESPN, it will definitely put him up there with Modell.
July 8, 201014 yr Who advises him on this sh!t? Hour long special? Seriuosly. Put up or shut up, son. If you leave Cleveland the last 90 seconds you played here were spent looking around ingnoring your coach calling for a timeout. Then you would go on national TV to tell the CLE fans you were leaving? That takes some cajones. Excellent legacy. Also is Chris Bosh always this flaky? I never followed him much before.

But at the end of the day, does it really matter? I mean look at the past two years. Other teams are winning championships and going further in the play-offs without James on the roster. IF CLE has a committed ownership with deep pockets (and I think Gilbert qualifies), then the future can't be that dim.
July 8, 201014 yr IF CLE has a committed ownership with deep pockets (and I think Gilbert qualifies), then the future can't be that dim. Very true. Gilbert isn't going to pull a Knicks salary cap move or a Cavs ver.2002 where they tank a season hoping to get the top draft pick. He already secured Byron Scott. That is an upgrade over Mike Brown strictly in winning attitude and understanding the nature of the 7 game series when the playoffs roll around.
July 8, 201014 yr Chris Bosh...7 seasons, 1 2nd team All NBA, 0 All defensive teams, 211-320 team record all time, 3-8 in playoffs. Who cares. There's 0% chance he's going to Miami. He might win in Miami, but he won't be elevated to "greatest player of all time" in Miami. There will always be the discussion of whose team it is and no matter how many titles (if any) these guys win in Miami, Wade will always have 1 more. A part of me wants to think this is hype to build up for this TV event. Otherwise, it's not very good PR.

IF CLE has a committed ownership with deep pockets (and I think Gilbert qualifies), then the future can't be that dim. You hit the nail on the head. Even if Miami picks up those three they have garbage on the bench. Even "the Big 3" in Boston added 'Sheed and already have a great PG in Rondo, yet they couldn't pull it off against the Lakers. The sports media isn't asking the obvious question: When 'Bron and Bosh or Bosh and Wade or Wade and 'Bron are sitting, who plays? A team not good enough to win a first round playoff matchup, let alone the Lakers. Beasley is gonna carry them? Give me a break. Sign-and-trade? Outside of Wade (and now Bosh), who on Miami is worth a damn? I think he bolts even though I hope I'm wrong. But those 3, without some serious help, aren't gonna win it. Not with Oklahoma City and Portland waiting in the wings after the Lakers. You need a team with a decent starting 5, a quality big man and a bench. Boston, LA, San Antonio and Detroit had all had three elements. The Miami Heat, even with Wade, Bosh and Bron, do not.
July 8, 201014 yr Even with all three, the heat would have 5. FIVE players on their roster, and be out of cap space. That means the other 9 players on their roster would either have to divy up the $5m mid level exception or sign league minimum (I think like $300k, a little higher or lower depending on how many years in the league you have) contracts. I still don't see this happening. I think it's just a smoke screen. Note the "report" said, "leaning towards". This is a circus. Someone wake me up at 9:10 tonight.
July 8, 201014 yr Hope you're right McC, but I'm not confident. And who's to say they can't get some veterans (although I'm not sure who) who want a ring to sign for the minimum of $1m?
July 8, 201014 yr I am so over this whole thing. I think he's staying here. Although, I must say it would be hilarious if he went to Miami, and the egos of the three prevented them from winning a ring. Even better if the Cavs won one without him, which I completely believe they could.
July 8, 201014 yr "The Decision". That's just great. I think ESPN purposely named this "The Decision" based on Cleveland's sports history. We all know them- no need to name them off. They can then be the first to do a "Woe to Cleveland" sports story based on "The Decision" IF Bron chooses to leave. But again, we won't know till after 9:00. The PD said that ESPN wants the decision to be named by 9:10. That'll save us some grief, but not by much. This whole ordeal is BS.
July 8, 201014 yr Miami does not have the mid-level exception to divvy up among veterans. A team has to be OVER the cap to use the MLE. Miami has the money it has to spend on FA's and will burn that budget on these three if the reports are true. Then, they are left with Wade, Bosh, James, Chalmers, maybe Beasley (if he is not sign/traded to Toronto) and 3 2nd round draft picks. The rest of the roster will have to be filled with players accepting the veterans minimum, which I believe is a little over $1 million. Sure, some players WILL agree to that in order to win a ring.... but not a whole lot of them. God help the Heat if Bosh and/or Wade get injured in or near the playoffs, which they often do. Both players rarely play a full season. I am sticking with my prediction. The naming of the show ("The Decision") was quite deliberate IMO. And, to my understanding, the name was given by James' people. That said, I will not be nearly as pissed if he goes to the Heat as if he goes to the Knicks or, to a lesser extent, the Bulls. At least then I could go to bed with the satisfaction that NY fans watched their team get torn down and purposefully be pitiful for the past 3+ years for....... Amare Stoudamire.
July 8, 201014 yr Windhorst was just on ESPN, and he mentioned that he's heard from a number of LeBron insiders who've indicated he's decided on Miami. I'll believe it when he says it at 9, or 9:10, or 9:57.
July 8, 201014 yr Whatever happens I am just looking forward to a conclusion. All the back and forth is wearing me out. I had dreams about it the past two nights, I am on LeBron overload.
July 8, 201014 yr A great article: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100708 20. Seven months later, it's happening. I can't wait to watch for the same reasons I couldn't turn away from O.J.'s Bronco chase or the Artest melee: it's Car Wreck Television. If LeBron picks anyone other than the Cavaliers, it will be the cruelest television moment since David Chase ended "The Sopranos" by making everyone think they lost power. Cleveland fans will never forgive LeBron, nor should they. He knows better than anyone what kind of sports anguish they have suffered over the years. Losing LeBron on a contrived one-hour show would be worse than Byner's fumble, Jose Mesa, the Game 5 meltdown against Boston, The Drive, The Shot and everything else. At least those stomach-punch moments weren't preordained, unless you believe God hates Cleveland (entirely possible, by the way). This stomach-punch moment? Calculated. By a local kid they loved, defended and revered. It would be unforgivable. Repeat: unforgivable. I don't have a dog in this race -- as a Celtics fan, I wanted to see him go anywhere but Chicago -- but LeBron doing this show after what happened in the 2010 playoffs actually turned me against him. No small feat. I was one of his biggest defenders. Not anymore. And here's where I really worry, because I don't think LeBron James has anyone in his life with enough juice to hurl his or her body in front of the concept of "I'm going to announce during a one-hour live show that I'm playing somewhere other than Cleveland." It's the best and worst thing about him -- he has remained fiercely loyal to his high school friends, but at the same time, he's surrounded by people his own age who don't stand up to him and don't know any better. Picking anyone other than Cleveland on this show would be the meanest thing any athlete has ever done to a city. But he might. Assuming he's not malicious, and that he's just a self-absorbed kid who apparently lost all perspective, that doesn't make him much different than most child stars who became famous before they could legally drink -- or, for that matter, Tiger Woods. That's just the way this stuff works. Too much, too fast, too soon. You don't lose your way all at once; just a little at a time. Then one day you look up and there's a TMZ photo spread with 15 of your mistresses, or you're agreeing to stab an entire city in the heart on a one-hour television show.

It seems like something happened after game IV and prior to game V that seemed to change his attitude.... IF he does announce a city other than CLE tonite, I'm at a loss at to the motivation behind a prime-time infomercial to do it. What happened that would make this necessary? If CLE was never in the running, why not have said so from back in June.

July 8, 201014 yr I think Cleveland has always been in the running, it's his hometown, he has a huge home & fan base built in here and I think the Cavs can pay more than anyone at the end of the day. But at the end of the day also, Cleveland is a very small market for making endoresement money and the real question is what other talent they can bring in to help him win multiple championships. I just went home for lunch and ESPN radio had Colin Cowher going out on a limb and GUARANTEEING that Lebron stays in Cleveland. However, the idiots on TV including Skip Bayless who I can't stand said he's going to Miami, no doubt about it. Skip & Jackie McMullan also ripped Lebron for everything he's done pretty much since he left high school. Not sure how he's become the bad guy out of all this though. Best point I've heard yet is that if he's truly interested in "promoting his brand" by doing this tv special, making the announcement tonight that he's playing for any city but Cleveland is going to make him look like a real jerk. Hope his advisors thought this through...
July 8, 201014 yr I wonder who the commercial sponsor is that gets the ad space at 9:07 tonight? Nike? Gatorade? Budlight? Ford?

Best point I've heard yet is that if he's truly interested in "promoting his brand" by doing this tv special, making the announcement tonight that he's playing for any city but Cleveland is going to make him look like a real jerk. Hope his advisors thought this through... sorry but I must disagree. You dont have to be in NYC or LA to make big endorsement money this isn't the 60s
July 8, 201014 yr Some random thoughts I had while running in this oppresive heat. David Stern would stroke out if he did this but LeBron could have really had a lot of fun with this hour long special. First he could start by apologizing to America about the whole free agency debacle, saying along the lines that it seemed like a good idea at the time (08 Olympics) but it really ended up being asinine. He then could go on about how he did really consider other teams and disolve into a series of skits. The Nike puppets in LA, a Brady Bunch sequence in Miami with him sharing a room with Bosh and Wade. Maybe the roster sequence from Major league in NY, "This guy is dead." "Cross him off then" etc etc. And then wrap it up with a Dallas-esqe dream sequence ending where he wakes up and stays in Cleveland.
