The Land has been one of the nicknames for Cleveland since the mid-90s at least, specifically within the Black Community and within Hip-Hop culture. That along with C-Town, which more people may be fa

  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

^race thread is the better place for that.

Where's the race thread?  Can one of the mods move it over there?

I'm not going to move the article, though.  It can stay here, and any discussion about the article that stays related to the Cavs can, too.  If you want to discuss the purely race related aspects of it, then you can repost it in that thread and begin that discussion there.

Oh man, he just won't let this go.....and so neither will I!!

LeBron James, manager: Race a factor

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5633199

In the interview, CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien asked about "The Decision," the one-hour special on ESPN in which James announced that he would play for the Heat, and some of the negative headlines it generated.

"It's just about control and not doing it the way it's always been done or not looking the way that it always looks," Carter said.

O'Brien asked if race played a role.

"I think so at times," James said. "It's always, you know, a race factor."

Oh but we all supported him and all the other black athletes and buy their jerseys and tickets and make them god like figures. How does race play any role in this. We have hated traitors in every sport for all time whether they are white, black asian or mexican.

If that is an attempt at image repair, it will backfire.  However, given the broadness of the statement, can you really disagree?  "A factor".... "at times."  Was there some fan out there who said "that damn $&$^#^"?... of course.

Was it a significant factor that would have made a noticeable difference if absent?... of course not.  I give you Brett Farvre as proof.

I don't want to talk about it much, but I think the best explanation for the hatred is that when I try to come up with a athlete acting comparably I can't do it. It was an unprecedented FU to the fans. Favres and Clemens did go to their adopted "home" team rivals but not on national television special for less money after teasing the whole process along for 2 years. Yes the Favre circus is annoying but he at least went to the Jets first after being forced into retirement by GB.

Yes James situation is not comparable to anybody elses. And race was not a factor

Yes James situation is not comparable to anybody elses.

And he's the one that made it that way.  I find it very hard to feel any sympathy for him for that very reason.  He made his bed, now he's gotta lay in it.

And it's unfortunate that he's using race as the reason people are mad at him.  Please, they're mad at him because of the way he went about free agency.  He strung along half the league for 2 years for personal gain.  What did he think was going to happen?

the annoying thing is he actually thinks it is because of race

Like I said above, there is a big difference between saying that race was THE factor and race was A factor.  Can anyone legitimately deny that race played NO factor in how people responded to the decision?... And before you start making assumptions, I (not James) am in no way limiting that type of reaction (i.e., racially motivated) to white people (see the article that Clevelander17 posted above).

He would have been despised in Cleveland no matter what race he was.... but by whom and to what degree, race probably was "a factor" (e.g. Mike Trivissomo's and many of his listeners' reactions, I GUARANTEE YOU, would have been very different if LeBron was not black)

Yes, I can legitimately deny that race had anything to do with the uproar.  If you think that a white guy NEEDLESSLY giving the middle finger to a team that was BUILT around him, where EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE CONCESSION was given to him and his entourage would get a lesser reaction, then.....well, we clearly disagree.  If Tom Brady had done what LBJ did, trust me, Boston would be just as hurt, sad, and angry as we are.

Race, and racist accusations, have been factors in Lebron James career to some degree.    When he was on the cover of Vogue roaring with some model, there was a lot of hoopla about it being racially insensitive.  When he left and the useless Jesse Jackson started moaning about the Cavs trying to enslave LJB, we get another racist accusation though I'm not sure if Jesse's were all there with his commentary.

Hts121, this race card thing has just got to stop.  Just because an athlete is black and unpopular does not mean that race has one iota thing to do it, and your guarantee is both impossible to prove.  Race race race race race race race.  Why are we Americans so damn fixated on it.

Its racism against whites to assume we are racist

Sigh...

Was it a significant factor that would have made a noticeable difference if absent?... of course not. I give you Brett Farvre as proof.

But maybe you are right, TBideon.  Racism is over... done.  It couldn't have possibly played "a" factor in the way any single individual in this entire country, basketball fan or not, reacted to "The Decision" and the way he handled things during the free agency process.

I suppose Clevelander17's article about black protectionism was just drivel.

In hopes of calming you down, allow me to apologize for the offense you obviously took.  I would like to clarify (again) that I was simply commenting on the broadness of his statement.... at least what was posted (I did not watch the interview).  Something can be a factor, yet only a minuscule or infinitesimal one.  That's all I was saying.  The level of uproar would not be noticeably different.

Race could certainly be a factor in how certain individuals reacted to LeBron's 'decision'. But in the aggregate, I don't think you can point to the cumulative response he received and point to race as a driving factor.

So, unless he's had direct experiences with people that drive him to that decision (and I don't know if he has or not), my initial reaction is to discount it, and treat it as an attempt to deflect the blame, once again, from himself.

That's all I was saying.  Except I would say that Race certainly was a factor in how "certain individuals" (white AND black) reacted.  But the size of that group and whatever influence it had would not have made a noticeable difference if absent.

This report at least has some statistics behind it - http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/LeBron-James-says-race-was-a-factor-in-backlash-;_ylt=AnJZ4MrZshUwJKMzw3gYgxy8vLYF?urn=nba-273678

I think race is a factor, but not the primary factor by any means--especially not for Cleveland fans.  Anyone who treated us in such a manner would have gotten the same response.

wow every editorial on msn today was lambasting the race factor remarks. who can blame them? that was an incredibly weak and insecure excuse -- lebron&co. obviously just threw that out to deflect from the heartless lame-brain handling of his 'decision' and the hollow rings he is chasing by stacking the deck like his freakin yankees do. i'm done with the guy other than hoping he turns an ankle vs the cavs.

I knew it was just a matter of time before the race card was pulled. Its time he looks in the mirror and blames no one else but himself. Its very simple minded and "prejudiced" to deal that card.

I don't think anyone has brought up the new jerseys.  What's everyone think of them?

Love 'em.  Especially their simplicity.  They have that 'classic' feel.... like the Celtics' duds.

I like them, I just kind of wish they had gone with gold as the home uniform color instead of white.  They should at least have a gold alternate uniform.

The new floor design at the Q is also pretty cool.

Very cool use of technology in the new team shop with not having to go to a cash register to purchase items.  The Cavs seem to always be on the "cutting-edge" with that type of stuff (flashseats, etc).

dont know where to put this. i actually like it.

Nike "Rise" LeBron James Commercial

He's not a CAV, why not put it in the youtube thread?

Nike is trying their damnedest to put "the decision" behind them.  This wasn't a LBJ idea. Trust me!

Maybe these two posts can be moved?

LBJ's still a dick....Nike's still a marketing powerhouse.

GO CAVS!

Yeah move them, i was reluctant to post it here. And i said the same thing, he wasnt the brains behind any of this, just the puppet. But I have to admit it came out good

It is a very good ad.

BUT if he is soliciting advice then it would have been nice not to smack the Cleveland franchise and fans in the face on his way out.  He could have left with grace but he chose not to.  Now he is in Florida and we are starting a new chapter.

He's charming. All is forgiven. I love LeBron! I think I'm going to ask CDM to change my name to reflect that.

People like this ad?  Am I the only one taking it as a further slap in the face to Cleveland?

It's a stylish slap. More like, two slaps, a twist and a kiss

Cavs for 40 wins, narrowly miss 8 seed.  Bank on it!

I'm with you.  Now can this sh*t be moved to the YouTube thread??  I'm really tired of crap from LeBron clogging up the CLEVELAND CAVALIERS forum!

It can stay here.  While he is no longer a player for the Caves, this ad is clearly referencing his decision to leave and his old organization and fanbase here.

I just walked to the new team shop. Looks nice in there. Got to get used to all the new names though

Anybody going to the game tomorrow?

So, who do we want off the team? I have to buy a new jersey for my son, and my track record with sports jerseys in general so far has been impeccable. Within 1 season, the player represented by the jersey I buy is traded, leaves of their own volition, is a bust, or some combination of the three

Any takers?

Just buy a custom jersey with your name or something on the back, you cant go wrong with that. I can't believe when you go to a Browns game, the jerseys you see. Some are random players from the past, to assholes like Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr.

I refuse to buy a Jersey with a pro athlete's name on the back. Why not your last name or find one with no name on the back. Or, how about an old timer like Bingo Smith, Larry Nance, Mark Price, or Ricky Davis(just kidding). Andy would be your best bet if you wanted to go with a current player.

Anybody going to the game tomorrow?

I sold my tickets for a whopping $12.50 on ebay.  Pathetic.  $12.50 for opening night against the Celtics.  I can only imagine what I'm going to get for a Tuesday night against Sacramento...$4,000 down the drain...

Jesus you're pessimestic....why did you by the tickets if you didnt want to go to the games?

They could still be fun. Where are your seats?

Jamison.  Not enough bang for the buck and he plays the same position as JJ.  Hopefully, we can parlay (sp?) his contract and our trade exception into a nice piece.

I think we need Jamison's ability to score from the outside.  JJ has shown no ability whatsoever to do this.  I think a versatile 4 man is more important than a big 4 man on this year's team.
