The Land has been one of the nicknames for Cleveland since the mid-90s at least, specifically within the Black Community and within Hip-Hop culture. That along with C-Town, which more people may be fa

  • massive team effort & big win on espn vs okc tonight — awesome game and superb coaching and substitutions — anyway, i watched most of it out, but the end back at our dystopian atlanta hotel - 😂🎉

  • Great win! Six-and-one!! Great to see Garland and Mitchell together for a full game. Those two are going to be magical as they play together more.

I just didnt like what I saw with his turnovers and missed shots, often when he should have passed instead of shot. Thanks for clearing that up. I always tried to figure out what it meant, trying to link it to the players individual stats which I could never seem to make sense of.

Bump! cavs are a .500 team and they play NJ tonight. Come on winning record.

And (believe it or not) we're in 1st place in the Central Division.

I think we can be the NOTS!

Cavs are now 4-3 and ahead of the Heat in the Eastern Conference Standings....

if playoffs started today Cavs would have #4 seed and the Heat would have #5....Cavs would have home court advantage!

That all fine, but this is the first month of the Season. Lets revisit these posts in May.

OK Cavs, you bet the NOTS last night, lets do it again tonight!

MTS,

You need Thing 1 or Thing 2 (or maybe both) to proofread your posts.

I know.  Most of the time I just type without re-reading my posts.  :P

Thing 1 is worst than RNR and my Mom combined when it comes to grammar!

I hit Post first, then I reread.  That's why you'll see that almost all of my posts are edited within 30 seconds.

The Cavs are 3-1 on the road and 1-2 at home.  Hopefully, they can start to turn around their record at the Q tonight.

I don't think you can trademark the slogan for "the Three Musketeers"

No, it's not the Cavs' slogan.  It was around long before the Cavs even existed.  Suppose I started a pee-wee football team and adopted "winners never quit, and quitters never win" as my team's slogan.  I could not sue somebody who subsequently used that slogan.

Wouldn't the slogan need a TM after it if they had trademarked it?  It's right on the home page of their website with no marking after it.

According WFNY the Cavs own certain rights to the phrase in the context of professional basketball.  If the requirement of trademark required that a phrase or string of words not have any prior use the entire concept of trademark wouldn't exist.  Again referencing WFNY what really set people off about the cover was the combination of the slogan and gold trim on the red jerseys.  Someone in the comments there offered up that the Miami Heat apparently have added gold to their color pallete on their alternative uniforms.  But prior to that knowledge the slogan plus "wine and gold" in the context of the NBA would lead people (OK probably only Cavs fans) to think of the Cavaliers when they see this.  But then it's all moot because SI would be protected by claiming it's a parody even though it probably was just purely innocent use of the Heat's alternate jersey color pallete.

You're all sort of "correct", although I cannot go into detail.  However, if something was "funny" you all can rest assured, I'd be scheduling some "meetings" and having some "phone calls"!  ;)

Boy... where's tedolph when you need him?  You're right about the parody exception.  But I think it also falls under a 'prior art' (or whatever equivalent is used in this context) exception.  Now, the NBA may have some internal rules/laws which apply, but I'm not sure they would be applicable to SI.  Bottom line, the Cavs will do nothing about it, nor should they.

So I went to the game last night.  First one I made it to this year and missed much of the first half due to that traffic jam on I-90.  I get there and take my seat, look to my right (where the seating for the media members is located) and two feet away is none other than Aaron "the Hater" Goldhammer from WKNR.  I said what's up to him and he was pleasant in return.  He did, though, twirl his hair the ENTIRE game (at least the portion I was there for).... just like they always tease him on the radio.

  • 2 weeks later...

Down 25 at half, christ we need to shake things up.

Side note: Anthony Parker is god fucking awful.

Yeah, that was ugly.  I liked Parker, I am not sure what is happening.

The Cavs need an emotional leader on the court.  I'm not sure who that could be right now, but I feel like that is what's missing because at times, they can play really well.  But when they start playing poorly, nobody stops them from unravelling.  I was hoping Jameson or Williams would step up, but Jameson looks done and Williams has been hurt (not sure he has it in him anyway).

I thought Anderson Varejao would provide that spark.

It's just over 24 hours until "The Return".  The game that every Cavs fan has circled on their calendar.  So here's a column from the always quotable Jason Whitlock to get you going:

Sorry, but LeBron's a lost cause

Jason Whitlock, Fox Sports

I give up.  This column was going to be a plea for LeBron James to apologize to Cleveland fans for the classless way he exited the city.  An apology in the hours before Thursday’s Heat-Cavs tipoff would douse some of the animosity sure to fill Quicken Loans Arena.

An apology would relieve some of the stress on a Heat team totally uncomfortable with playing the role of villain, of being the team America loves to hate.

An apology would serve James’ image well, allowing his objective critics to move on.

But I give up.  LeBron James looks, feels and sounds like a lost cause today, a millionaire celebrity incapable of reaching rock bottom, self-reflection or uttering an ounce of remorse.

LOL That's funny...

Nice article, entirely true.

Windhorst gave a REALLY good interview on the Really Big Show (WKNR 850) this morning if anybody is interested in finding a podcast and listening.

Good article.. even if it is about the mistake by the lake!

ESPN Outside The Lines:

Believeland: A proud city forgets "The Player That Left" and remembers what it used to be

CLEVELAND -- There is a burly, angry man with a Chief Wahoo tattoo on the inside of his left forearm, and he knows I work for ESPN. That makes me the devil. We are standing inside the Cleveland Cavaliers locker room not long after their first game without LeBron James. The guy's name is Scott Raab, and besides being a native Clevelander, he's also one of America's best writers. His current project? A book that is part recount of James' breakup with the town and part meditation on the misery that comes with loving this place and its teams. Except he doesn't call him James. He calls him The Whore of Akron. You obviously see what's coming next.

I thought it was a great article and touched on a lot more than just "The player that shall not be named".

^It's not really an article about Lebron or even "the Decision".  It is an article about Cleveland.  It's more an essay than an article.  And a very well written one at that.

Wright Thompson nailed it. It's good to see somebody describe Cleveland so honestly and well.

^Yup.  A big relief to see something from ESPN get it right in regards to Cleveland.

^ YES! This was an excellent article. Thompson went above and beyond the usual pablum and cliches to get the hidden stories that make Cleveland great.  Much better than the usual superficial crap that so many journalists pass off to the nation.

I just read it. I actually shed a tear or two at the end.

"for everyone who ever loved something that didn't love them back"

Just brilliant.

Although, I thought he was talking about my neighbor when he said "The whore from Akron"

i almost hate to ask, but is anyone going tonight?

what to bring? just aa batteries or the d's? j/k! j/k!!!

anyway probably needless to say, but if anyone on here does attend we want a report!

My wife and her friend are using our tix.  I really don't want any part of it - seeing the game or taking part in the 'festivities'.  Not even sure if I am going to watch.  I am over it.... until I actually see him play in another uni (which I have managed to avoid so far).

The best part of tonight's game is that I can finally stop hearing about LBJ this and that.  The way people are acting, you'd think it's Game 7 of the finals tonight.

I am over it.... until I actually see him play in another uni (which I have managed to avoid so far).

Oh I got that over with after the opener w/ the Heat and Celts, you'll feel naseaus at first and it might seem like you have torrette's due to the stream of profanity that pours out of your mouth. But it gets better with time.

From an outsiders perspective, that article was a bit cheesy.  They make Cleveland out to be some down and out place, and the last place in America where a hard days work means something.  Please.  Maybe the roots of Cleveland are blue collar, but the current economy with all the medical and tech jobs is hardly indicative of the "we don't take nothin from nobody" type of attitude the article repeats ad-nauseam. Cleveland is a normal, modern city, and this article paints it and its people as some humble dying place that the rest of America should feel sorry for.

Agreed...and since this article is CURRENTLY being discussed in TWO places can the discussion of it be moved to one place?

Hmm..... maybe you should read the article again?  That's not what I took from it at all.  But that would be from an insider's perspective.
