Trade deadline is today.  Cavs are not expected to be active players, but that could certainly change.  If we make a move, I'd expect Haywood and his uniquely valuable contract to be dealt.  Ironically, several bigs and PGs are rumored to be available...... most of which are probably out of our price range, but you never know.

Isn't Haywood's contract more valuable this summer? Most teams still think they're in the chase and are less likely to dump salary until it's clear they have to rebuild/refine. But I also seem to recall Haywood's trade value is perishable so the Cavs can't wait too long to make a move.

If the Cavs don't go for Ray Allen (and Allen's playing-time requirements don't encourage me), then I expect them to make a play for a FA PG coming out of China in March.

I'd love for them to pick up a back-up big man in case Mosgov gets hurt or gets into foul trouble. But so many teams are in the hunt for the 8th playoff spot that they won't be willing to let an aging big man go.

Yes, Haywood's contract is more valuable in the summer if you want to trade him for a player making a ton of money.  However, with our recent acquisitions of Mozgov, Smith, and Shumpert, it is my understanding we are now limited in our ability to make such a move.  But there could be another team which doesn't have cap room this summer and would want to obtain him now to use his contract creatively over the summer to add a near-max player through a sign-and-trade.

One name to keep an eye on is Jason Smith of the Knicks.  He is a serviceable back up big man who NYK might want to dump to get under the luxury tax threshold.  With the buyout of Amare's contract, a straight up deal of Haywood for Smith would get them closer to the threshold.  Then the Knicks could use Haywood's contract this summer in a trade.  I imagine the Cavs know how much the Knicks would love to make a deal like that and might want something to sweeten the pot.

Smith is a decent scorer for a big man, but his rebounding isn't as prolific as what I'd expect for a big man. But he's fine as a backup.

Cavs ended up staying with what they have.  Smart move IMO.  There has been plenty of roster changes and there will be plenty of opportunity to sign someone off the street in the next month or so when the Chinese league comes to the end of its season and teams start buying out players currently on their roster.

There was, however, a serious flurry of activity at the deadline.  Dragic to Miami was the big one (Miami did well to get him).  KG back to Minny (who saw that coming?) for Thad Young.  Reggie Jackson to Detroit.  Kanter to OKC, Brandon Knight to Suns.  Michael Carter-Williams to Bucks, Tayshaun Prince back to Detroit, Isaiah Thomas to Boston, KJ McDaniels to Houston, Norris Cole to New Orleans were among a few of the highlights.

Kendrick Perkins and Javale McGee are two BIGS traded today who might be bought out. Perkins seems almost certain to not stay in Utah and Cavs are reportedly going to make a push to sign him. IMO he is the exact type of bruiser we need even if he isn't at the same level he once was. Practice between him and Timo could get interesting. Those two were really going at it in a recent game. Bulls and Clips are also interested

I'd love to have Perkins. He provides an incentive to teams NOT to foul Mozgov. If they do, they're rewarded with the schoolyard bully!

That's exactly what this team needs.

Looking good tonight...LBJ looked  quicker than he has all season.

Although I can't take these national televised games during the blowouts.

Stunning blowout of a team that WAS ahead of us in the standings -- until the Cavs neutered them.

Shumpert has been rounding into shape offensively lately.  Last night he was huge although most were focusing on LeBron, Kyrie and Mozgov.  His hawkish, passing-lane hawking presence is gigantic, and he really harasses shooters at the 3-point arch.  Iman is now crystalizing into the player everyone was excited about... but he does his work, quietly.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as the strong frontrunners to sign center Kendrick Perkins, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Perkins and the Utah Jazz are proceeding on a contract buyout that could be completed as soon as Saturday, sources said.

Perkins is leaning toward signing a deal with the Cavaliers, but has yet to make a final commitment, sources said.

If he can just keep hitting that outside shot with consistency, that alone is a great added bonus.

And I gotta say I was impressed with his athletic, aggressive move toward the basket on the play where he was elbowed in the face. He's a tough s.o.b.

I guess it's a done deal for Perkins. Well as much as these putting the cart before the horse reported done deals ever are.

EDIT: Chicago sports talk radio was abuzz about the Bulls needing Perkins to help cover Mozgov, and if anything else keep Perkins from signing with the Cavs.

What weakness does this team still have? MAYBE a backup PG, but I don't think that's an issue anymore. Shumpert's shooting is pretty damn good AND he plays perimeter defense. I think Shumpert bring a larger net gain at this point than an aging Ray Allen who won't be able to get the playing time he's reportedly demanding.

So I want to see how this team plays against Atlanta and Golden State now. Those may be the only two teams in the NBA capable of keeping a healthy Cavs team from winning a championship THIS YEAR (and maybe Indiana if Paul George comes back). Last fall, I didn't think we'd be championship caliber this season. Now I think we are.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^^Ray Allen wants to play drama queen... Back in the terrible period for the Cavs a month and a half ago, when LeBron was hurt, the team was demoralized and had lost 6 in a row, we desperately needed Allen because we couldn't shoot consistently from the outside... Now, a 1.5 months later with a rejuvenated LeBron and the 2 big trades and, now, Perkins, Allen is no longer essential.  We've got a number of sharp shooters (including LeBron himself) and younger, more athletic guards who also play good defense (although I understand, at age 39, Jesus Shuttlesworth has taken very good care of the bod)...

... I also understand a sticking point with the Cavs and other teams, is that Allen is demanding to play in 4th quarter crunch time... At this point, Allen's insertion would unbalance a, now, finely-tuned Cavs lineup.  So it's not like we don't need Allen -- after all, any team on the planet could benefit from the finest outside shooter in the history of the NBA -- it's just that he's not essential anymore and, in fact, would come at a cost to the current Cavs' cohesion.  Right now, we're firing on all cylinders.

I'm not sure that allen can just parachute in and play well, especial at his age.  I don't want him.

Phil Jackson lambasts Knicks in bizarre tweet

By Marc Berman

February 22, 2015 | 11:39pm

Sounds like Phil is phurious.

With the bare-bones Knicks falling to 10-45 after getting blown out by the Cavaliers in a Sunday matinee, Knicks president Phil Jackson unleashed a bizarre tweet indicating he’s losing his stomach for this:

Today's game vs Cavs gave bb gods heartburn and those that know what "it" takes/means a smh.

10:03 PM - 22 Feb 2015

He may be shaking his head, but of course it was Jackson who dismantled the roster.

The Knicks fell behind by 29 points in the second quarter against the Cavs, including J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert, whom Jackson traded away last month and had strong games in their returns to the Garden.

Next month will mark the one-year anniversary of Jackson signing a five-year, $60 million contract to become team president.

Ex-Knicks Become Vital Cogs for a Title Contender

J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert help Cleveland Cavaliers to 101-83 win over New York

By ANDREW BEATON

Updated Feb. 22, 2015 8:04 p.m. ET

For the second time in as many games since Carmelo Anthony underwent season-ending knee surgery, the Knicks failed to compete against a playoff-caliber team.

By the time the first quarter was over on Sunday, the Knicks already trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers by 19. From there, the game was about as listless as the matinee crowd at Madison Square Garden, where the Cavaliers eventually triumphed 101-83.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the game wasn’t the team’s static offense or uninspiring defense. Rather it was watching two players who the Knicks traded away for practically nothing now contribute significantly to a championship-caliber team.

Playing Forward (and Pundit, and Savior), LeBron James

FEB. 22, 2015

On Pro Basketball

By HARVEY ARATON

David Blatt stepped into the corridor late Sunday morning, in front of reporters and television cameras, to say he had no information to share on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ interest in the former Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins, who was waived by Utah after a trade.

The primary report of the imminent transaction had come from the noted journalist LeBron James, who, in a Twitter post on Saturday, wrote: “The Land welcome my bro as well as my muscle (LOL) @KendrickPerkins to the city with open arms! Happy and thrilled to have u aboard homie!!”

For the record, Blatt, the Cavaliers’ coach, would not comment on what James, playfully referred to by many as the team’s de facto general manager, had already confirmed. It’s all part of the multidimensional and ever-expanding LeBron brand, going to vocational places where no other No. 23 — specifically Michael Jordan — has gone before.

Impressive comeback win vs Detroit tonight. The Cavs defense sucked in the first half allowing 62 points. But in the first 18 minutes of the second half, Detroit scored only 16 points. 16! That was just impressive.

Bittersweet news about Derrick Rose. Hate seeing great players go down. Yes, it will probably help the Cavs but I also wanted to see the Cavs beat the Bulls at full strength. If the Cavs win it all, some will wonder if we would have won it with Rose. We can point to the Cavs being up 2-1 on the Bulls in the regular season, but the postseason is different. Just ask the 1988-89 Cavs who beat the Bull 6-0 in the regular season and lost to Chicago in the playoffs with Jordan's The Shot.

Love hit eight 3s and Mozgov got four "nyets"! Oh, and Kendrick Perkins got in the game, much to his surprise (according to him!) and SCORED!

The Rockets and their fans are in LeBron's head. I think he just missed four foul shots in a row.

These teams are brawling, and it looks like the Cavs are the ones more affected by the physicality.

No kidding. Score is 103-104 and Lebron just went 0-2 at the charity stripe with 4 seconds to go. Way to blow it.

Wow....LBJ has melted.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Lost a game but showed we can compete just about anywhere. LeBron couldn't get comfortable at the line.  Rough game- what made me most happy is how LeBron played, he wanted it badly. Very disappointed no plays for love late in game or Ot

I believe we were watching a potential preview of the Finals... I think Houston has a better chance of getting there than the 3-point reliant Warriors.  I also think we were hurt a lot more by missing Kyrie than Houston was without Howard.  Motiejunas, unlike Howard, has an outside shot which stretches the defense whereby, with Dwight in there, the D can pack it in tight underneath ... It was a rough and fun game, even though we lost.  Clearly there was playoff intensity. You won't see LeBron clank FTs like that again... Love really came up small in crunch time, and our guards couldn't throw the ball into the ocean... and we STILL should have won...

... btw, James Harden should have received a Flagrant-2 and tossed out for kicking The King in the balls... A very dirty play.  He should receive a hefty fine.

i did like the fire. but i didnt like seeing lebron go into l vs 5 mode. this may never be said again, but the cavs offense - they were doing better without him.

LeBron, LeChoke, LeBrick, LeLoss.

As he's gotten older, he can be roughed out of his game sometimes.  This was especially the case with the package kick.  Even the NFL would have kicked Harden out, but the NBA doesn't.

Barring that, isn't a situation like this why we brought in Perkins?  Harden should have woken up in the locker room.  Blatt still thinks he's playing international ball sometimes and IMO that's why they don't play rough when they should.

^Even though Thompson was great yesterday, esp in the 4th, it puzzles me that Blatt seems still reluctant to use Mozgov in the 4th quarter.  Motiejunas is smaller and more mobile than Howard, but I still like Mozgov at blocking the rim... Blatt did wisely move LeBron over to Harden because The Beard was burning Shumpert to a crisp... but we saw how that punk reacted when LeBron locked him up D-wise ... he kicked him in his nuts.

LeBron, LeChoke, LeBrick, LeLoss.

Yeah, LeBron missed the FT's but yesterday was on a lot more than just LeBron.... Where were our guards, scoring-wise?  Where was Kevin Love in the 4th quarter (3 shots; missed all 3 including a CRUCIAL layup that Harden took the length of the floor for an almost and-1 ... he missed the FT)... Mozgov played only 18 mins, none in the 4th quarter, and no Kendrick Perkins, when we really needed an enforcer in such a dirty game from Houston...

David Blatt choked as much as anyone.
