the cavs dodged a bullet. kyrie mostly wanted to go to the knicks and apparently the cavs looked at it, but they wouldn't let go of porzingis. would have been a disaster.

I don't think there is another trade in the market that would match this value. You get an all star PG who can score very well, a defender who can probably cause issues for Durant, a YOUNG center that is under discussed and of course the nets pick that will likely be Michael porter jr or begley.  You can also use that pick this year to get an all star if a team is in the tanks. Cavs have a lot of power with this pick.  Worst case scenario. If Lebron does leave next year, you have pieces to be ok in the future. cedi Osman, zizic, and whoever the pick is

Lebron is going to make Isiah a household name, and I'm sure Kyrie will realize about 3 games into his Celtics season what he's missing there! :)

I like the deal.  You swap comparable point guards although Kyrie, overall, was better imho.  You also get Crowder, who is a nasty defender at the 3 and who is a decent 3-point shooter at nearly 40% last regular season.  He is a worthy LeBron backup... Zizic could be a strong big at some point and, perhaps, can take some load off Tristan... But almost of equal importance is the Nets' 2018 unprotected first round pick which, as Believeland hints, will likely end up in the top 3; maybe no. 1.  If all remain reasonably healthy, we now have Thomas and Rose backing him up at the point.  You also have Cedi Osman as a potentially strong 2-3 swingman back up, especially defensively.  We also bring in Jeff Green as the backup 4, who also has strengths...  All in all, we look pretty good on paper despite the tumultuous off season...

The only potential downer is Thomas' health.  His playoffs hip injury was huge and some are saying the Celtics may have viewed him as damaged goods and, therefore, were willing to part company with him...

Ironically we will immediately see Kyrie at the Q for the opening game next season on national TV.  I'm sure the fans will trash him unmercifully.  And while I thought he chose a graceless way out the door, I will forever be grateful to him for THE SHOT in Cleveland sports history.  Besides that he provided tons of enjoyment for Cavs' fans for 6 seasons here and I hope fans remember that, too.

Best of luck to Kryie. Seems like a nice kid who played his a$$ off for five hall of fame years. Can't begrudge a player for leaving in a profession where an owner can trade you without consequence. Loyalty goes both ways, of which there really isn't any in this business. Players should not be held to higher standards of loyalty than owners.

They didn't HAVE to trade him though.

Fun fact: Irving was the #1 pick in the 2011 draft and got paid $4.1M right out of the gate.  Thomas was the #60 (last) pick and got a bottom-feeding rookie entry salary of $381k (though it obviously rose very rapidly from there).  He was among the lowest-paid players to ever post a double-double in an NBA game.  His first one came in February of 2012 ... against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That is a very good top 9.  And it sounds like there is a decent chance that Wade joins at some point in the season.

IT gives us almost exactly what Ky gave us on offense.  He can score in bunches, hit the outside shot, and finish on drives to the rim.  Ky was bad on defense, really bad at times, but IT may be the worst defender in the entire NBA.  That's not his fault.  It has everything to do with his height and short arms.  He's a liability and teams gameplan around him.  That is why, as stunning as it may sound, I would lean towards starting Rose and turning IT into a super sub spark plug off the bench.  Still play him 35mpg and let him finish most games.

Crowder is the type of scrapper we've been missing since Delly left.  He's a hard hat guy.  Happy to have him.

The Zizic kid has size and skill but the film I've seen of him makes me question if he has the athleticism to ever be all that good in the NBA.  His vertical is particularly unimpressive.

The real gem of this trade, however, is the 2018 unprotected Nets pick.  The Nets SUCK.  Unless something drastic happens, it will be a high lottery pick in a draft which is absolutely loaded with young big men who are both skilled and athletic.

In the end, I think this is indeed a very good package.  It certainly is a lot more than Indy got for PG13 and Chicago got for Jimmy B, both of whom are comparable talents to Irving, if not better.

Way to show of the 'intelligence' of Cleveland fans... First some fans burned LeBron's jersey when he left in 2010, then cheered on Dan Gilbert after is wacko 'open letter' to LeBron shortly thereafter.  Not a good look nationally.

These are skewed.  Thomas was the man in Boston.  His numbers will go down playing next to LeBron, as will his ball handling.  Kyrie's ppg will likely rise playing next to Hayward in Boston; the latter being much less ball dominant.

Kyrie and Thomas had similar usage rates last year (33.7 for IT, 30.2 for KI). Kyrie had the highest usage rate on the Cavs, and it was a career high. Hayward is also a high usage player, around 25th in the league at 27.6.

They didn't HAVE to trade him though.

I agree that IT's PPG will go down a bit, but disagree with the rest.  Kyrie will not thrive with the ball in his hands so much.  He won't have those wide open looks which were given to him either through great LeBron assists or because the opposing defense is focused on LeBron.  He will face more double-teams, more traps, and will get matched up against the opposing team's elite wing defender more than he did here in Cleveland.  IT, on the other hand, will get less attention from opposing defenses and will benefit from LeBron's court-vision.

These are skewed.  Thomas was the man in Boston.  His numbers will go down playing next to LeBron, as will his ball handling.  Kyrie's ppg will likely rise playing next to Hayward in Boston; the latter being much less ball dominant.

You could also argue the opposite, that Lebron elevated Kyrie's game by giving him open looks and plenty of amazing assists.  Kyrie is great, but I don't see him transforming into some game-changing mega-stud just because he got away from Lebron.

I'm inclined to think this trade weakens the Cavs right now, unless they move the pick for a valuable veteran. But I'm kind of curious about what Boston is doing. Did they get better this offseason? Jettisoned Bradley, IT, Crowder, and Olynyk. Added Kyrie and Hayward. Not sure that's an obvious upgrade.

^And Jason Tatum and Aaron Baynes.

^^^I agree with these thoughts. I would expect on a typical night Kyrie might go to the hoop 2-3x a game. I don't think its unusual for IT to go to the hoop 5-10x a game.

The key to this season will be managing the point guard minutes. Rose will play more minutes early in the season and they will hopefully ease off of him when IT is ready. I would hope Rose starts when the Cavs are facing bigger PGs.

Given that the Cavs backs were to the wall on this, I am happy with the trade. IT for Kyrie isn't a straight swap but Crowder and the valuable pick make it worth it. I am not sure what BOS got out of it besides not having to make a decision on IT's max contract if he had another good year. That seems to be the major upside.

Kyrie was always a different kind of dude. He was cool as a cucumber in the high pressure moments but was often disengaged during regular season (and playoff) games.

Report: People close to LeBron James confident Dwyane Wade will join Cavaliers

by  Colin Ward-Henninger

LeBron James has said that at some point in his career he'd like to play on the same team as his best friends -- Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul -- and he may take a step toward that goal this season.

In the "Wine and Gold Talk" podcast with Chris Fedor for cleveland.com, Joe Vardon reported that LeBron's camp thinks Wade will be end up in Cleveland this season. From Vardon:

As of right now, people close to James are fairly confident that, at some point this year, Dwyane Wade is going to end up on the Cavs.

^It may be in the Bulls best interest to hold on to him up until the trade deadline.

This is odd.  The Cavs reportedly trade to trade Irving straight up for Klay Thompson.  Not sure who would have been the PG for Cleveland or the SG for Golden State.

Weird offseason for Cleveland (JC Gilbert seems to be a terrible executive).  I don't hate the roster as of now.  But Thompson becomes the only "core" player or regular rotation player for that matter under the age of 27.  This team will become terrible if/when LeBron leaves or his wheels fall off due to age.  Frye, Korver, Jefferson are all 34+.  Only young guys signed are Felder and Osman, no idea what to make of Zizic.

The team has about a 3-4 year window, max.  That all hinges on LeBron staying, of course.

Very Stable Genius

^If the rumor is true and we had acquired Thompson (I doubt the trade would have been straight up), then we'd have both Rose and Calderon to run the point.

The roster is built around LeBron.  It was specifically constructed to fill his window.  That's why the Nets pick in the Boston deal was such a huge get.  Remember, Boston turned down a trade proposal for Paul George because it wouldn't include that pick.  So, even if LeBron leaves (absent something drastic changing, he won't), we will have a very high pick to start the rebuild.  But I put the chances of us trading that pick for an All-Star midseason just as high as keeping it.

I don't expect Felder to be on the team for very long.  He did nothing to light the world on fire last year and I just don't see us keeping two sub-5'9 PGs on a 15 man roster.

I don't think the cavs are done wheeling and dealing. I think there is still more to come.

yeah -- it looks like the golden ticket draft pick and perhaps felder and shumpert who supposedly wants out too, could be a big trade package. if they make another blockbuster trade like that i think it assumes they are going for another title right now and also that lebron stays around awhile. however, if they keep the draft pick i think it assumes they dont trust lebron will stay. i dont think they can take out gs with this team so far, so i hope they quietly press lebron to commit for at least another year and then make another big trade.

i dont think they can take out gs with this team so far

Sure they can.  I wouldn't put them as the favorites, but it's hardly a foregone conclusion that they would lose.

well perhaps but lets be real. you wouldnt put your $ on it. for another thing that best chance assumes this old team gets there without injuries, which is highly unlikely. i mean can wade even make it to the finals if we get him, much less do anything helpful during the season?

Carmelo Anthony to Cavaliers not as farfetched after big trade

By Marc Berman August 23, 2017 | 8:42pm

When the Cavaliers talked to the Knicks about Kyrie Irving, Cleveland brass had no interest in discussing Carmelo Anthony. Kristaps Porzingis was their lone focus.

Whether that changes after the blockbuster trade that sent Irving to the Celtics, with the Cavaliers emerging with more assets than anyone imagined, remains to be seen. As does whether Anthony, who has a no-trade clause, will have renewed interest in playing with LeBron James — even if it is for one season.

The Irving chaos and James’ reported wish to bolt Cleveland after the season turned Anthony’s main focus toward Houston. But the Cavaliers came out of the Irving fiasco looking more formidable than ever by adding explosive point guard Isaiah Thomas, defensive forward Jae Crowder and the rights to the Nets’ potential lottery pick next June.

Sometimes you have to consult out of town media to get a silver lining perspective.

Cousins on this team makes them the favorites.  That's their biggest need by far, a center that can plug the middle.  An enforcer would help too, LeBron's getting to the point where he needs a Marty McSorley and Love and Korver can be knocked off their game too.

Yes I would. Guy can't dunk. Or they could move him.

TT is actually an ideal energy guy off the bench.  He comes in when the other team is getting tired and makes a mess of things for about 5-10.

Omg. What is going on with this trade. Can the Cavs live without drama for a day?

^Cavs are in the catbird seat.  If Thomas' hip is still, in fact, injured, I were Altman, I may just keep Thomas and the trade in tact, but additionally demand either another 1st round pick or Jayson Tatum.  If Danny Boy balks at both, then we rescind the deal.

That's amazing. A little hard ball from the rookie GM. Probably has the predatory loan shark breathing over his shoulder but still

In addition the Cavs have leverage to pretty much ruin the Celtics. I mean if the Cavs rescind the trade, Boston can't possibly keep those guys (crowder and Thomas right)? You are telling me things are going to be "ok"? Thomas and crowder wil likely have lost their Celtic pride
