July 2, 20186 yr It sounds like Lebron is going into semi-retirement mode. Gonna make a little more basketball cash on his way to other things.

July 2, 20186 yr It sounds like Lebron is going into semi-retirement mode. Gonna make a little more basketball cash on his way to other things. Hopefully someday heading up an ownership group to buy the Cavs from Gilbert. Yuck I hope not. I hope he never succeeds at anything ever again. He’s a disingenuous egomaniac. I mean, Gilbert is too, but I don’t want to see Lebron’s face around here again.
July 2, 20186 yr ^ Hah, way to vilify the one guy who has succeeded in bringing a championship to Cleveland in the last, what, 60 years? After people were burning his jerseys and Gilbert reacted like a fool when he went to Miami, I'm surprised Lebron even came back to Cleveland at all. But he did, and he came through on bringing a championship to a long suffering fan base. He almost single-handedly got the Cavs to the finals 4 years in a row, in spite of the team not really giving him much in the way of a supporting cast. If Durant didn't go to the Warriors, the Cavs would have almost surely won multiple championships in the past few years. What else do you want from the guy? A lifetime in Cleveland? He's a hometown guy, and even said Cleveland will always be home, so I bet he will be involved in the region in various ways forever. He's lifted the profile of Cleveland immensely. Brought you untold amounts of exposure and positive press. But now that he's decided to go play for one of the most iconic franchises in sports, he's a villain with a super-ego who never should show his face in Cleveland again? Get over yourself. Lebron has contributed way more to Cleveland or really Ohio than just about anyone else in recent history. Personally, I hope he wins multiple championships in LA. The NBA is more fun when the Lakers are good.
July 2, 20186 yr Okay so I'm reading today that it "makes sense" to trade K Love in order to tank the season and retain the high draft pick. No. I hate that. I will not support a team that has no intent on winning. Probably why I'm a schlub and not highly paid GM.
July 2, 20186 yr The iconic LeBron James Wall advertisement will be taken down this week Nike confirmed.
July 3, 20186 yr I think folks have the right to feel angry or upset at LeBron olleaving again. He's a once-in-a-generation player and the whole league knows it. But look at the bright side- we've had him for longer than any team in the league, we've seen him grow as a player, and we've witnessed so.e of the best basketball anyone could ask for, season after season. Some of the things will be unforgettable- we'll be telling our grandkids how great '16 was for the city, how he came back after leaving to right a wrong against us, and finally brought it all home. And because of that, I personally feel that he's earned the right. He's earned it. This time, it's not a slight against the city. This times different, as we've all grown as a fan base watching him grow to beco.e the most dominate player in all of basketball. And because of those memories and experiences, I wish him well. Nobody could ever sell the feeling of the moment the curse was lifted, the screaming the excitement and streets, and the biggest parade in this town's history. It was all special, it was all great to see, and it won't be forgotten.
July 3, 20186 yr Warriors signed Demarcus Cousins. The 2018-2019 Season is over. LeBron has played his last Finals.
July 3, 20186 yr Would a non-Warriors NBA team even have a chance against the Warriors? Lillard Kawhi Leonard LeBron LaMarcus Aldridge Anthony Davis I mean...you can make it Warriors vs the rest of the NBA and the Warriors are probably favored. Very Stable Genius
July 3, 20186 yr Warriors are the ultimate power play team. You can’t upstage them. Boogie is only one year, it doesn’t matter. As long as Durant and curry are at Gs, they can’t be beat. Nobody can compete with that shooting. I still like Lebron, but no way I will root for the lakers. Or Yankees. The fan base.....gag
July 3, 20186 yr Also, I’m starting to get the sense that players don’t like Lebron. The curry/kyrie video last year at that wedding. Kyrie leaving, Paul George not going to La. we know he’s obsessed but one could conclude he’s not overly popular within the league. He sat down kevin Love at a pool and convinced him to sign a 5 year max and then bounced. And finally, boogie takes a MID LEVEL EXCEPTION (~5 million) to play on the warriors, a true power play to squash the lakers good vibes. I’m sure the pelicans were offering him long term Money and for perspective, Delly makes double that. This seems like an intentional move almost for spite

And he had no help in Cleveland? He had two 5-time all-stars in their prime. It’s not like he came back out of the goodness of his heart. He left Miami because they were old and Cleveland had young talent. I agree he can do what he wants but why would fans here have to keep wishing him well? He don’t play for our team.

July 3, 20186 yr Is Cleveland more of a basketball town or a baseball town? I’ve heard varying answers to that... Or is it more of being a a LeBron fan versus being a cavs fan.
July 3, 20186 yr ^i would say historically a baseball town. Goes back way further with a pretty rich history. If you ask 10 cleveland fans if they would rather see a cavs or Indians title, I think majority would say Indians. But Lebron upped the game big time for the Cavs. The younger generation of clevelanders will be really into the Cavs during their lifetime
July 3, 20186 yr Warriors signed Demarcus Cousins. The 2018-2019 Season is over. What. A. Joke. Perhaps ironically, I’d say LeBron’s ‘decision’ started this whole intentional stacking of the deck trend in the NBA. Boston had their “big 3” but they weren’t quite the same as what was assembled in Miami or Golden State. This era of the NBA sucks.
July 3, 20186 yr I feel bad for the Memphis, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Charlotte, Portland, and other smaller market teams. The nba has become largely irrelevant thanks to super teams. I imagine the nba will have to implement a league rule that would ban the construction of super teams...it’s just super unbalanced and uninteresting at this point.
This has nothing to do with market size. The teams in New York, Chicago, Washington, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta and other larger markets have largely been irrelevant for years. Golden State was nothing for decades until recently. The problem with the NBA is that only a handful of teams have a chance to win a title. And there’s nothing the league can do when punks like LeBron want to form a superteam!!
July 3, 20186 yr ^i also think this is a phase or era that will pass. Lebron and Kevin Durant are the first insecure superstars the league has ever seen, and that has led them to both at some point form a super team just to get a ring. Lebron is clean because of going back to cleveland and winning one the hard way. Would like to say Durant does the same at some point hopefully. This era is really about the players having the control, not the owner. While I am not opposed to that, I still think there is a happy medium between player control and super team. As for the NBA, it’s doing just fine because many fans like players, not teams. The NBA popularity is growing at a really high rate and especially with the younger generation. Even though Cavs will have no shot to win this year, you can still find the compelling story lines in the league and for your own team see if your young guys can be good

This seems like an intentional move almost for spite Some players feel a lure of a potential championship is not worth the cost of having to sacrifice their brand image and alter their game. It’s all about Lebron and it will never be his fault. The two most recent examples of changing their game and losing brand status are Kevin Love & Chris Bosh. Guys like Paul George know that nobody is beating Golden State in the next 2 years so joining Lebron in LA when he’d have to alter his game and provide support to Lebron instead of being option 1A on OK isn’t worth it.
July 3, 20186 yr here is possibly another smart angle for the cavs, control of the media to promote positive spins and propaganda --- gilbert wants to buy sports illustrated: https://nypost.com/2018/07/01/cavs-owner-is-latest-interested-buyer-for-sports-illustrated/

I imagine the nba will have to implement a league rule that would ban the construction of super teams...it’s just super unbalanced and uninteresting at this point. The NBA isn't irrelevant. It's the second strongest North American sports league in the US behind the NFL. It has a following among the under 21 crowd that's unrivaled by any North American league, including the MLS. It's global reach has grown exponentially over the last two decades. Finals ratings are nearing Jordan-era levels. The NBA is strong and youthful. Games are entertaining and fans are laid back. It's the 21st century league for sure and this dynasty isn't going to change that.

July 3, 20186 yr If your a fan of your smaller market home town team, I would have no idea why you would be excited for next season or the next few seasons of your local nba team. The super team dynamic has made the finals matchup predictable and boring. Everything about the nba, aside from the glorious talent of a few players like Lebron, Curry, Durant, etc is what still makes the nba still watchable.

I’m sure the pelicans were offering him long term Money and for perspective, Delly makes double that. This seems like an intentional move almost for spite There are reports that ZERO other NBA teams offered him a contract (outside of some conflicting reports that New Orleans wanted him back and offered him a better deal than the MLE). If he wanted out of New Orleans, and his only offer was Golden State... The center position doesn't really matter in Golden State though. As long as they have KD and Curry....you could bring Shaq out of retirement and start him at center for 50 games and they'll still win a bunch of games. Cousins is a perennial 25 and 12 center who will probably see his numbers drop to something like 19 and 10. He doesn't care. He gets to coast for a year to a ring and if he stays healthy, he'll cash in on a big paycheck in 2019. 2018-2019 is over. It's all about setting up moves for 2019 and 2020. LeBron needs someone like Kawhi to join him. Who knows, he may even get Cousins or AD to join him as well. Until an equally absurd super team of 4+ All-Stars is formed, Golden State will run the league. They do have looming contract questions when Thompson and Green finally come up and their market value is $30+ million. They're making sub-$20m now. Maybe KD "goes home" a la LeBron after one more title as well. The NBA either needs a hard cap (like the NHL) OR they need to allow each team to offer one SUPER RIDICULOUS MAX contract outside of the cap. LA could pay LeBron $80m/season. Golden State could offer KD $75m. Etc. That way, you roughly spread the 30 or so best players throughout the league. The NBAPA will never go for that, of course. They want the cap in place so the bottom half of players in the league can get good money. But you need one of those two (or both) measures in place. It's just absurd. I will watch approximately zero NBA games next season. Very Stable Genius

I imagine the nba will have to implement a league rule that would ban the construction of super teams...it’s just super unbalanced and uninteresting at this point. I think this is a pretty ahistorical view. First of all, San Antonio, Cleveland, and Oklahoma City, all small market teams, yet have been 3 of the top 6 teams of the past decade. Second, the NBA has always been dominated by dynasties. From 1980-2010, 6 teams (Lakers, Celtics, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets, Spurs) were responsible for 28/30 of the championships. From 1957-1969, the Celtics were champions 11/13 of the years, including an 8 year streak. The Lakers + Celtics have 35/72 of all NBA championships. If anything the NBA has actually been getting better in this regard, Golden State not withstanding. Before the previous CBA, teams were able to sign contracts up to 6+1 years, while now I think the max is 4+1. The cap rules about adding mid level players have been relaxed as well. The result is that now every offseason superstars are available (and like Paul George, willing to sign with small market teams). Two years ago Philly was one of the worst teams in the league and hadn't been considered a major free agent destination since Moses Malone joined Dr. J in 1982 to win a championship. This year they were considered the second best free agent destination. That wasn't possible in the old system.
July 3, 20186 yr The league probably hasn’t seen anything like the Warriors before, but the NBA has always been imbalanced. It’s just the nature of the sport, since one or two players can influence the fortunes of a team so strongly. In the past 30 years, 7 teams have won 27 of the championships. I’ll keep tuning in though, because I love pro basketball and even watching a mediocre team is more entertaining to me than watching any other sport.
July 3, 20186 yr I will watch Cavs games to see if we have anything in the young guys. I will also watch LAL vs GS games. That could really interesting TV. Same with kyrie and Boston vs lakers. Yeah I know I may be the exception not the rule, but the Cavs Run has made me like the NBA and in general And not just the hometown team. We had a great run where cleveland was the beneficiary of the lack of parity, now that we are on the short end, let’s see if our egomaniac owner can establish a true culture and build a stable franchise. Again, I think the superteam is a phase. It’s been a chess match, these guys eventually retire
July 3, 20186 yr Oops! Sorry carnevalem[/member]! Parallel thinking! Even Boston has only one of those past 30 chips. Boston, Cleveland, and Dallas are the only teams without multiple titles.
July 3, 20186 yr I've been watching the Cavs since World B. Free. I'm mean, I might have been their only fan during the Mike Fratello era. :D I'm genuinely curious about what Dan Gilbert will do going forward. He has an ego, he'll spend money and is certainly more entertaining than Gordon Gund ever was. Supposedly free agents will never ever come to Cleveland again. Is this true? Why would I stop watching now? It's not like the Cavs will be serious contenders for a while so I could care less about who the Warriors are picking up.

Also, who knows how much of the trade was Dan himself. Willing to see where Altman goes from here. I also wonder if Dan will keep Lue or just start fresh.

July 3, 20186 yr ^i also think you learn from mistakes and Dan is probably good at that. Getting Kyrie was awesome in the draft, but lets face it, he was never going to spend his whole career here. You need a "chip on your shoulder" type star, a la russell westbrook and not a star obsessed with their off court brand and all that. Someone who almost takes on the identity of the city. We will see what we get out of Sexton talent wise, but attitude wise he seems to align with CLE. Or just the ultimate professional type, like Tim Duncan. Duncan may be one of my favorite all time athletes. Loyal, talented and he retired so non chalantly and nobody has heard from him since. These other guys HAVE to get back in front of the camera, do all that...he never seemed to need attention...thats the type of star that Cleveland would need. Free agents wont come here probably unless they are from here or had a shot at the title. Most of our talent was from draft and/or trade historically. Probably because of weather and/or nightlife. Oh well

I agree but I think the intention was to start over in 2010. Nobody had any idea LBJ would come back. He was dancing on a stage with Wade and Bosh in downtown Miami talking about seven championships. If Lebron had stayed in Miami the Cavs would still have had Irving and Wiggins. Their talent alone would have made the Cavs at least a .500 team in the terrible East by 2015 or 2016. Who knows what would have happened afterward.
July 3, 20186 yr Wiggins and Irving wouldn't make the Cavs winners imho. But I do think Kyrie would have gladly stayed in Cleveland (losing games) if not for LeBron upstaging him.

July 4, 20186 yr Goodbye, LeBron; Love, the Midwest posted by Tim Carmody Jul 02, 2018 https://kottke.org/18/07/goodbye-lebron-love-the-midwest
July 4, 20186 yr ^thats a nice article, thanks for sharing. One thing though, it’s still fresh and feels like he’s gone for good. Everyone thought that when he went to Miami too. I’d put money on him coming back again and retiring here in his final season. If Dan will take him, lol
July 4, 20186 yr Interesting point I heard on the radio today... Lebron is very close with the banana boat guys (wade, melo, cp3), but not much at all with the mid -20’s stars (pg3, Kawhi, Butler, curry). Kyrie is very close with the mid -20 guys...PG already turned him down, and I just read an article today that Kawhi is more open to the clippers now than the lakers. Lebron May have a really tough time finding help. The milennial stars May conspire to ding both lebron and Magic’s laker legacy a bit. This is gonna be interesting
July 4, 20186 yr Nobody has mentioned it on this forum, but the Cavs did pick up an interesting raw prospect post draft in Billy Preston. The Cavs might be able to drop him into Lebron’s set plays as he can perform at a comparable level of Lebron on offense. From what i can tell he is like a 17yr old version of Lebron but he is now 19 or 20 and missed a good year of organized basketball. He also has bounced around every year for the last 6 years. There isn’t a whole lot of film on him, but what there is is fairly impressive. He has the physical tools at about 6’10”. I’m intrigued to watch the Summer league starting Friday to see if there is any Irving to LeBron magic happening between Sexton and Preston. The fast breaks should be great as they both attack the basket. I can see a path forward for the Cavs on a team built for Lebron with 0 expectations to maybe make the playoffs. This becomes Sexton’s team due to his sheer will to win and court vision. If Preston can play more than 20 minutes a game, the Cavs might be able to scare Toronto.
July 6, 20186 yr Report: Kyrie Irving never wanted LeBron James to rejoin Cavs; almost asked for trade after 2016 title https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/report-kyrie-irving-never-wanted-lebron-james-to-rejoin-cavs-almost-asked-for-trade-after-2016-title/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 6, 20186 yr Kinda psyched for summer league tonight. Cavs have a very interesting roster. Obviously top billing goes to Sexton. But I’m very interested to see if Preston had anything, and it will be nice to see Osman and Zizic actually get some run. Osman was showing off an improved 3 stroke at the FIBA qualifier against Ukraine.
