August 29, 200816 yr This is a real gem. It's my understanding that CPS is saving this structure and planning to rehab it for school use once again. Is my understanding correct?
August 29, 200816 yr This is the real deal-a beautifully intact historic school building. The fountain appears to have (now) rare Rookwood tiles. Of concern are the wet floors in image #5-would this be from a leaking roof? Also worrisome is the large structural crack running diagonally through the brick courses in photo number 4, both issues need immediate attention to avoid major damages. Glad to read CPS is willing to invest in bringing this jewel back to use, hopefully, any rehab will be sympathetic to the original design. In it's heyday, this must have been THE school to attend. Very nice photos!
August 29, 200816 yr Glad to see some interior photos! Good work Maxie. Ugh. Don't do this to hardwood floors!
August 30, 200816 yr Last photo says it all for this beautiful building. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 30, 200816 yr I can't believe you got in there - how'd you dood that? I have enjoyed the gargoyles and architecture there for some time and ached to know what was in there. THANK YOU. I know a retired music teacher from there and she told me it once had an indoor pool, it was filled in and is now under the gym - or something like that. I read that Rothenberg (CPS superintendent? board member? something like that) believed in corporate punishment too! THANK YOU THANK YOU
September 1, 200816 yr The pool was located under the current library. The building is going to be renovated as a 550 student Pre-K through 8th grade school (even though CPS wanted to demolish it). The School Planning Team and the architects are currently working on the renovation plans. There will be a new gym located along East Clifton where the playground is currently located, as well as plans for a green room with teaching space and greenhouse (pending private funding). It is truly a great building, and hopefully it can be a central showpiece for Over-the-Rhine again.
September 1, 200816 yr Beautiful building and excellent photos. I can't help thinking that a visually rich traditional environment has a positive influence on the educational experience of young children, especially when compared with the sterile institutional design of most schools now. And yes! Respect your elders! I've lost track of how often I have to remind young whippersnappers of that!
September 1, 200816 yr It looks inside and out a lot like my gradeschool, the oldest part of which was built in 1912. As a kid I always like that I was part of something that was old. We got to go in the boiler room during tornado drills and the janitors always had loud music playing and pinup posters, which was always a cheap thrill. We had an old gym that was non-regulation (in fact it was L-shapes) and had plywood backboards. Of course when they built the new gym the teams didn't get any better. Kind of like the Reds. Kind of like the Bengals. Kind of like CPS.
February 3, 201015 yr ^ It's slated for renovation as the neighborhood school. Bids are supposed to go out Fall 2010, with construction beginning Winter 2010, and occupancy Fall 2012
February 3, 201015 yr Yes, CPS is currently calling Vine St Elementary "Rothenberg" until the original building is renovated, at which point Vine St will be closed.

January 31, 201411 yr Demolished by CPS: Yeah that was depressing. I stood outside for over an hour watching them dismantle the cornice... CPS is not usually very kind to historic buildings.
