West Salem (Wayne County) population 1501

Known to many northern Ohioans as the home of Dragway 42:  http://www.dragway42.com/index.html

But I didn’t think that would interest most UO’ers, so here are some shots from “in town”:

My pic of this was badly shaded, so I "borrowed" an image from the Ohio Historical Society:

Seems like a shame to use this as a gym:  :-(

Apparently they like the military:

Ohio is packed with hundreds of these little towns; it is hard to imagine what it would be like to actually live in one.

Thanks for the pics!

I was actually going to stop in that town years ago just to check it out.  (Glad I didn't).  Nice shots!

I don't think I could stand the excitement. :-(

Nice pics, but it looks positively dreadful compared to my hometown. Ugh, I've had to correct people so many times.

Me: "I'm originally from Salem, south of Youngstown".

Them: "Ohhh, yeah off I-71 by the outlet mall".

Me: "No, south of YOUNGSTOWN. You're thinking of West Salem."

:whip:

Didn't little towns everywhere used to have Greyhound bus stops? I don't think I've seen one for years.

How does that one work? Are you supposed to call to reserve a ride or something? Or do you just hang out until the bus shows up? Do you buy a ticket when you get on?

i couldn't imagine a more perfect town for dragway 42!

The hours of operation were listed as Monday-Thursday 9-12 and 5:30-6:30, so apparently they have an employee at this station.  There is one stop daily south to Columbus, and one daily headed north to Cleveland.  While you can buy Greyhound tickets online, I assume they need a local agent because of the sizeable Amish population who are obviously not online or using credit cards over the phone to buy tickets.

LOL...this is a funny post to me because my brother actually lives in West Salem.  He is a teacher at Black River local schools so it's close to where he works.  I (we) were raised in Northern Medina county in Valley City (outside of Medina)...but we are both very different.  I like the city and he hates it.  He loves being way out, but everyone is different.  I actually like the medina area to this day...no, it ISN'T urban, but is does have some nice things to offer.  I guess I am like everyone else and have made fun of other places that I either do not know much about or are not to my liking....but all in all, everyplace  is a place to call home for someone!  :)

my next door neighbor here in nyc is from medina. he has worked for 25 yrs in central park in the strawberry fields section -- he cleans up the ashes and flowers people leave on the john lennon 'imagine' memorial. small world!

I never visited West Salem when I lived in Wooster... so I thank you for this comprehensive tour.  I never heard of Dragway 42 when I was out there... but I didn't get out much.

My family moved to West Salem from NJ in 1991. I've lived there off and on since then, and to this day my dad still lives there. While it's not an exciting place, and I very much prefer living in Lakewood, so many of the people there in West Salem are very nice people, genuinely friendly and considerate.
