August 28, 200915 yr We're not talking about the pimply teenage manager of Pretzel Jetzel at the mall, we're talking real jobs! I know, right. These kids might not be cut out for corporate america. You talk about corporate America like it's the end all be all. Imagine an industry where wealth is shared AND you don't have to act like a raging dick. Then imagine me working in it and you'll start to get the picture. Honey, I work in entertainment. That is something I could never picture and I have a very active imagination.

Not active enough, apparently. Times have changed, old man. While you're busy screaming at interns for cell phone use, the rest of us are having a good time making money, making the world a better place and being pioneers. It's a beautiful thing.
August 28, 200915 yr What are your biggest pet peeves? Bosses, especially obnoxious, overbearing, condescending, full-of-themselves, vindictive, arrogant, self-serving, malicious, loud, pompous, selfish, domineering bosses. I don't like them either! Luckily i've been blessed with some good bosses. Except for that whore in London. Tell us what you really think!!! Don't hold back! She was a slut. You don't sleep with employees below you and bait them with the promise of "career advancement". She was above me at the time, but she slept with one of the guys that reported to me. She tried that with me, unfortunately we don't play on the same team, (strike one for her) and I'm a calculating, manipulative, opportunist, so she set herself up for failure from jump. So I laid my trap and waited. I'm a very patient bitch. >:D While I waited for her to fall into my trap, I studied her family, professional contacts and noted miscellaneous habits. I knew she would slip and let her guard down. Since I rebuked her, She then would try to critique my work with a fine tooth comb, however, her boss (our European division Head) gave me a spot bonus for an environmental/image campaign that the prime minister and BH palace praised. I decide to develop a greater relationship with him. (strike two for her). So then he would come directly to me on projects, ask me to speak at staff meetings or ask how we would do something in North America. This cause problems between her and him. Then it was announced we'd have a staff function and families would be invited. Opportunity knocked. ;) and MTS answered. All during the outing, I picked her husbands brain. I then understood why she cheated, the man had the personality of a toothpick, the looks of, well lets just say he was he wasn't cute and he was about 15/16 years older than her. She was a straight up cougar. Skip to a few month later. It's review time. We have our meeting. I go into her office sit down and she comes to the side of the desk I'm sitting on and she has all my papers, etc. and says, "you came here on a VP fast track program, but quite frankly I don't think you VP material. What might have been acceptable in Cleveland is not ok in London. Good Ideas, but sloppy execution". She said this in a super condescending Kate Blanchett voice. She let me have it, but with no proof of poor performance. I asked, "do you have any proof of poor performance or are you blatantly going to ignore the positive comments of your boss, the PR team at large and other division heads about my work?" her response, "what they thinks doesn't matter" I say, "really now? Are we done here?" I knew she would say, 'Yes, would you like to say add anything?" I say "sure". I go to my office, get the emails between her and my employee (Yes...I check emails) and the pictures I'd aquired of them going into Lanesborough and Park Lane hotels arm and arm and showing affection, along with copies of hotel folios. I go back into her office, toss the folder on her desk, then I lean over her desk and got real close to her face and say, "I'm sure this is proof that I know how to execute!" (strike three, you're out) A few minutes later she was at my office and timed it perfectly that I would be departing for HR. She gagged. So I told my HR "source" what happened and unknown to me, another male employee complained about her advances. So with my information and this guy....she hung herself and I won!! I value my job. I'm not a bitch to tangle with. I play for keeps! So remember kids..... Oh... did I mention I sent copies of the pictures to her house. ;) There is nothing like a friendly reminder, of bad decision, that arrives at dinner time. Ok...no more....this is all stuff that's going to be in my book. I would not be proud of this.

August 28, 200915 yr You mean blatantly invading someone's privacy and restorting to stalking aren't things you'd be proud of? Huh.
August 28, 200915 yr People who walk into a room full of people, make a pronouncment, then when they are answered, turn to the person and say "I wasn't speaking to you".

August 28, 200915 yr There certainly was no shame admitted in your post, so by sharing and making funny comments I assumed you were proud of your actions. Moving on.

LOL  But seriously, you're an old man set in his ways. I get that. New ideas are scary things. I'm not trying to change your mind, but damn it if I can't openly mock you. In a good humored way, of course. :)

August 28, 200915 yr You're too much. I blatantly unethical human being who thinks it's 100%, A-okay to behave that way. You should run for office!

August 28, 200915 yr i'll admit it, one of my biggest pet peeves is other people...like, most of them.
August 28, 200915 yr nice grammer If that was meant to be ironic, I am laughing with you. If it wasn't, I'm laughing at you. Thanks for making me laugh. :)
August 28, 200915 yr Yeah, I'll throw one out there. Ticket Master Convenience Fees. Not only is it an extra, worthless fee, but they had the gall to label a "CONVENIENCE FEE". One one hand, I appreciate the irony, but on the other it's just a pet peeve.
August 28, 200915 yr nice grammer If that was meant to be ironic, I am laughing with you. If it wasn't, I'm laughing at you. Thanks for making me laugh. :) At this point, I'm always laughing at DanB. :)
August 28, 200915 yr Checking emails for starters. You think that's ethical behavior? Seriously? Do you think it is not within an employers right to monitor email?
August 28, 200915 yr Checking emails for starters. You think that's ethical behavior? Seriously? Do you think it is not within an employers right to monitor email? Did I mention anything about rights? Hold on, let me go back and look again. Nope. Nothing about anything being within anyone else's right. Try ethics, next time.

August 28, 200915 yr Okay, for those who ride the short bus: Do you think it is unethical for an employer to monitor employees emails? Read it slowly, so you can comprehend (understand) it.
August 28, 200915 yr You're too much. I blatantly unethical human being who thinks it's 100%, A-okay to behave that way. You should run for office! Behave in what way? What did I do that was wrong? How old are you? Checking emails for starters. You think that's ethical behavior? Seriously? You can't be serious. As a manager, I have the right to check any email sent on company property. The machine is company property. As an employee, you do not own the email box you send email via, the company does. I am within my rights as a manager to read those emails. As a diligent manager, I occasionally check my employees emails and phone logs.
August 28, 200915 yr Checking emails to uncover secrets about an extramarital affair and then have the woman followed and THEN SEND THE PHOTOS TO HER HOUSE is 100% unethical and 100% none of your damned business. Period. End of story.
August 28, 200915 yr Yeah, the problems with the MTS story above do not include the monitoring of company emails. That is fair game. Using it to blackmail, or send it to her husband? Wrong.
August 28, 200915 yr Yeah, the problems with the MTS story above do not include the monitoring of company emails. That is fair game. Using it to blackmail, or send it to her husband? Wrong. Did I send it to her husband? You can't blackmail someone when you tell HR. Also, where did I say that I sent the pictures to her husband? Substitute husband for house and it's still just as wrong. Also, if you didn't intend for her husband/family members to discover the photos, then what did you intend? To put the fear of God in her? Oh, wait. That's still all kinds of unethical douchebaggery.

August 28, 200915 yr It is absolutely okay for an employer to monitor email as well as internet browsing. As an IT Manager it is part of my job to do just that. There are lots reasons why and here is one that just happened a few months ago. All email to various ISP’s (yahoo, MSN, etc.) kept getting blocked from the IP address of our email server. Our customers were extremely annoyed that they couldn’t reach us by email. Once I was able to have the blocks removed, I started to monitor e-mails sent to the blocked domains. I found that one person was forwarding junk email (jokes, videos) to hundreds of recipients on his email list. ISP’s have sophisticated software that looks for these types of patterns because they usually are from spammers and not your everyday email users. The employee was terminated and we haven’t been blocked since he was let go. I do not condone what MTS did but one should NEVER use a company email address for personal use.
August 28, 200915 yr actually, notifying HR about this sort of behavior is absolutely the right thing to do. A manager having sex with employees opens the organization up to sexual harassment complaints. It is absolutely ethical to check an employees email for personal stuff as that is typically against the rules in any organization. I am continually amazed that anyone uses their company email for anything other than work. No one from outside my organization knows my work email and if my coworkers send me something that is not work related i delete it immediately afterward (from both inbox and trash). Perhaps it's true that a company going crazy about technology use among employees is a little behind the times. People now have grown up with it and it's actually part of their day. I can see that argument, but not that MTS was wrong on any strict ethical grounds...except maybe using it for personal gain...although it seems that the means justify the end in this case.
August 28, 200915 yr I allow myself one non-work e-mail contact through my work e-mail and if the conversation get any where juicy or questionable we take off line for the phone after work or lunch.

Then she should have thought about the consequences of her actions. She ran up against the wrong person. Today, being at the top of the food chain, I would do things differently if I had an employee that reported to me who was sleeping with other employees and using their title to keep them "in check".
August 28, 200915 yr Also, we need to remember this was at the dawn of corporate email. Back then it was just Microsoft Schedule Plus. You could only email and check calendars. When your back is up against the wall, you're at your most resourceful moment. What I did was partially defensive.
August 28, 200915 yr You keep telling yourself that, MTS. Choosing to ignore company policy (most companies have a policy for this sort of thing, I've no reason to believe yours was any different), and taking things into your hands ought to have gotten you fired. I'd have fired the both of you for unethical behavior. I probably would've also alerted the police to your insane antics. One could make a pretty good case against you for menacing.

August 28, 200915 yr I'm with MTS on the email part. Personal or not, any email on the company email server is fair game to be read and used against you. Other steps to use that email for blackmail and personal gain are over the line. I agree with MoonlightOhio that if I was the boss and knew the whole story of MTS's steps, I would have fired both.

LOL I can tell you're young and havent worked in a big international company. You have no idea on the shit that goes down.
August 28, 200915 yr People that activate their turn signal after they've slowed down to make the turn. And then folks not utilizing their turn signals generally. Or...How about when you are behind someone making a left turn.... and when the light turns green, they still sit behind the light....when they are SUPPOSED to ease forward to get ready to turn. The result...YOU get caught waiting for the whole process for the green light again! Just plain stupid. Didn't they listen to their driving instructor!
August 28, 200915 yr Oh, I know full well what goes down inside large corporations. But I also know the difference between the right way to go about things and the wrong way. You chose the wrong way. It may have worked out for you in the end, but to make the leap and say that that makes it right is asinine. Stop trying to use your experience as sort sort of whacky justication for terminable actions. And if you're reading any of the other posts in here, you'll see I'm not alone in thinking this.
August 28, 200915 yr MTS I am curious on the cellphone policy? I understand your no PDA/Cell usage in a meeting policy (although I love the fact that my boss(es) have blackberries when they are meetings/offsite all day otherwise I would be waiting for an answer) but what is the ground rules for your cell phone in the office? Out of sight and ringer turned off or do have a total prohibition? There is a peeve .... I hate it when people cannot exercise the common sense, courtesy, and manners to silence the thing in important meetings, movies, plays, shows, , etc..etc... It is a testament to a culture that has its manners eroding by the day, and its stupidity climbing higher and higher.

That was 15 years ago and as I said earlier, today I would handle things differently. It was self defense. She was trying to thwart my career. I was going down like that. It doesn't really matter, i did my time in London and came back to C-Town with a title. What other people think about me, doesn't phase me one bit. Walk a mile in my shoes, then a you may have some insight to what makes MTS tick. ;) Anyway....how about those pet peeves. LOL
