MTS I am curious on the cellphone policy? I understand your no PDA/Cell usage in a meeting policy (although I love the fact that my boss(es) have blackberries when they are meetings/offsite all day otherwise I would be waiting for an answer) but what is the ground rules for your cell phone in the office? Out of sight and ringer turned off or do have a total prohibition?

There is a peeve ....  I hate it when people cannot exercise the common sense, courtesy, and manners to silence the thing in important meetings, movies, plays, shows, , etc..etc...  It is a testament to a culture that has its manners eroding by the day, and its stupidity climbing higher and higher.

What is worse are the self important people on the plane who cannot power down there devices when the FA instructs them too.  If you're that important take a private jet.

I'm with MTS on the email part.  Personal or not, any email on the company email server is fair game to be read and used against you.  Other steps to use that email for blackmail and personal gain are over the line.  I agree with MoonlightOhio that if I was the boss and knew the whole story of MTS's steps, I would have fired both.

YOU'RE FIRED!!!!!!

I hate when you're at the gas station right behind someone and they stop at the first pump instead of pulling up to the next pump and you have to drive around or wait. :whip:

I hate when ODOT or their contractors  closes a lane of 77 N at rush hour causing a traffic backup that is at least 3 miles long for NO REASON WHAT SO EVER! Seriously they closed the lane and ther was absolutely no work going on in the cones. I appreciate closing lanes at night to work and reopening the in the morning but at least wait until after rush hour to start closing it or it defeats the purpose.

I love when you're waiting to use the restroom at Starbucks--standing right by the door or at the end of a line leading from the door--when someone comes up to you and asks if you're "waiting for the restroom??" :wtf: (invariably this happens virtually every time!) :shoot:

Oh, I know full well what goes down inside large corporations. But I also know the difference between the right way to go about things and the wrong way. You chose the wrong way. It may have worked out for you in the end, but to make the leap and say that that makes it right is asinine. Stop trying to use your experience as sort sort of whacky justication for terminable actions. And if you're reading any of the other posts in here, you'll see I'm not alone in thinking this.

You don't have a clue

My biggest pet peeve is that cigarette smoking is bad for your health.

My biggest pet peeve is that cigarette smoking is bad for your health.

Mine is that almost everything fun is bad for your health.

Mine is that every last smoker feels it is a right to dump their butt on the ground.  Right in front of you.  No shame.  Crazy.

When people on UO send you a PM and you try to respond, but their mailbox is full!  :whip:

Speaking of smoking, I hate it when people come over and automatically assume it's okay to light up without asking.

I just hate when they come over.  They don't have to light up to stink like hell.

^come over and smoke where?

When i was a smoker (damn health concerns) i always tried to be courteous as possible.  always smoking outside, in designated areas.  Butts in the ashtray or acceptable receptacle. Never in a restaurant where people were eating.

You may have been thoughtful, but many smokers are not.  As a tall person, I've had people blow their smoke up....directly into my face.

Oh crap, I can't believe I forgot this one: DOG OWNERS.  I love dogs, I really do.  I'm hoping that in the near future I can adopt a little guy.  But dog OWNERS I hate.  When I come over to your house, and I'm wearing decent clothes, IT IS NOT OKAY OR FUNNY WHEN YOUR FILTHY ASS DOG JUMPS ALL OVER ME WITH ITS LONG ASS, DIRTY TOE NAILS.  NO.  NO.  NO.  And clean up the damn place, for the love of God.  There's nothing like sitting on someone's couch for 5 minutes and leaving with 6 lbs of dog hair all over you.

many? i'd say most are not.  i never saw an issue with a smoking ban because it never bothered me to walk 25 feet out the door and smoke outside.

I certainly understand how easy it would be to toss a cigarette butt on the ground, it's annoying carrying around that tiny little filter until you find a garbage can, but it's much more obnoxious to see them all over the ground.

Cat owners suck too, but they're not nearly as big of a problem.  Cats tend to run like hell whenever someone new walks into the room, which is fine with me.  Cat hair's a b!tch, though.

The biggest pet (Ha!) peeve with cat owners is the damn smell of their ENTIRE HOUSE.  Q:  If the cat pisses in the catbox, then why does the ENTIRE HOUSE smell like cat piss?  A: Because you need to clean the damn catbox more often.  And hide it away in a room that's off the beaten path.  I don't want to walk into your living room and feel little bits of kitty litter crunch under my feet.

Amen.  That is one of the reasons I don't like cats.  I hate it when you go to a cat owners home and use the restroom and - BAM - the obviously over used litter box is right there.  That is so gross!

I just perused his story, but it seemed like he was using the emails for defensive purposes (his and the company's), not personal gain.  Now, if he told the woman "unless you step down so I can take you job, I am going to take these emails to HR", that would be coercion and/or extortion.  But there is nothing LEGALLY wrong with taking the emails to HR to either protect your job or the company's interests.

Coercioin only arises when you 'force' another into taking or refraining from action where the other person would have a freedom of choice.  So.... tattling is not coercion.  Threatening to 'tattle' unless the other person does or does not do something which should be the other's rightful choice.... that is coercion.

Moonlight - what is and what is not "ethical" totally depends on the industry/profession.  There are no hard line rules, save for certain professions such as law, medicine, finance, etc. which have written ethical codes.... but even those vary from state to state.

If MTS had taken his findings to HR, that would've been fine.  Having her followed, photographed, and having the photos mailed to her home for anyone in the family to see, is not fine.  Agree?  Cool.

Followed?  It's a public place anyone could be there at any time

Mail?  Why would a person open mail that is not address to them or that is sent with specific instructions that only the addressed recipient can sign and accept the delivery?

In the news biz, what MTS did would be considered nothing. I've seen 100 times worse done to regular citizens, hell, whole towns and cities. If anything, he was just covering his ass and protecting his job in a 100% legal fashion. I think if I were in his shoes, I might do the same (though not really sure since I've never been in that position). With that said, I wouldn't want to do what he did, but if my job is on the line, yeah, they're gonna go down with me.

TMZ anyone.  LOL

1. Tele-marketers who are not on the line when I answer the phone.  Most of the time, I just hang up if no one immediately responds.  But sometimes I will wait for them to pick up their end and then tell them to "hold please"

2. Stuck driving behind someone who will not go the speed limit.  Funny how the maximum speed allowable under the legal standards is actually the minimum speed allowable under social standards

I hate when you're at the gas station right behind someone and they stop at the first pump instead of pulling up to the next pump and you have to drive around or wait. :whip:

And then they take their own sweet time getting around to pumping, and go inside to pay and while they're there casually pick over the lottery tickets they want to buy before pouring themselves a coffee and fiddling around with creamers and such, and then get back in the long line at the register to pay for it.

The drive-thru.  It doesn't even matter which one.  I hate them all.  Screaming into a box and straining to hear the cashier speak through the low volume and static is enough to make me want to pull my hair out.  Add to that the guy who's ALWAYS in front of you, ordering enough food to feed an army and it all has to be made with the strictest of specifications, and I'd just as soon go hungry for a week.

And when you finally do get your food, it's wrong.  Every.  Damn.  Time.

ProkNo5's lazy roommate would disagree.  LMAO!!

The worst are any fast food places that have both iced tea and sweet tea.  And if you want just regular iced tea, plan to have to have to go back around a second time.  It doesn't matter what I say ("regular iced tea," "iced tea, not sweet tea," "the tea without any sugar in it"), I ALWAYS get sweet tea.

this time of year, in anticipation of the September primaries, a mailbox stuffed with campaign "literature," and getting robocalls from those same campaigns. The other day, however, I mistakenly picked up the phone and it was an actual person (or so he seemed) asking if he could "count on" my "vote" for "so-and-so" for "such-and-such office." I obediently replied that he could, and that effectively ended the exchange. Never engage a telephone campaign worker with questions about policies, postions, etc. You'll regret it.

^That is why I don't have a home phone, just the cell.

And that brings me to my pet peeve of the day, when I get treated like a martian for not having a home phone. Sorry kids, its not uncommon for people under the age of thirty to not see the point of paying a hundred bucks a month for a mobile phone with email, text messages etc, and another thirty for a home phone which has significantly fewer features.

On another note, stop sending me phone books! The only thing they are good for is looking up funny last names when I am bored.

Yes, all fair enough...But I can tell you some horror stories with issues I have had with cell phone companies and land line companies in terms of poor customer service.  And that in itself could bring up another peeve of many customer service issues...talking to someone who asks what your problem is...then having to forward you to someone else anyway---after they assured you, in the first place...that you were speaking to the right department. Then, you have to explain it all over again...get put on hold and have this music and advertising imposed upon you......and then you get cut off!

I could mention the countless mistakes they have made that I had to end up paying for. My best solution for me is NO PHONE....and if you want me, Skype me...email me...or send a letter! That's how fed up I am with both ways. UGH!  It is soooooooo  frustrating.

Smoke travels  even when the smoker tries to be courteous to step away....and it seems it is always creeping toward the faces of the non-smokers.  As the saying went... having a smoking section is a restaurant was like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.

Except we've come to an entirely different solution with pools than smoking.

Check KOOW's tagline

"Oh, I know.  Americans are so fat.  But I think Americans would be less fat if Subways had Drive-Thrus because then American's could choose the healthy option." -- ProkNo5's fat, lazy, idiot roommate.

I think the automatic phone book thing is completely ridiculous and a huge waste of paper.  I mean, I can't tell you the last time I looked something up in the phone book and when I do, it's something like a doctor, who has the same number every year - I never get the new phone books, I just let them sit in the foyer with all the other books people don't pick up til they take them away and recycle them.  I look most numbers up on the internet.

the internet, especially google 411, has made phone books obsolete.

^ Well, I am not a phone book advocate either...But two things we must remember... 1. To not to forget how to actually look something up in a book. (Have a niece who didn't even know how to use an encyclopedia when the net server was down)  2. Make sure you write important numbers down in case of power outages when the internet or cell phone is not an option. You never know when we will be attacked by zombies.

Thats like kids who don't know the dewey decimal system.

I always backup my contacts.  I don't a single persons phone number, with exception to my parents and grand parents.  I would be at a loss without those.

Well, Encyclopedias are almost obsolete.  I mean, what would we have kids do - look up things in a card catalog if there were no internet?  Unless power went away forever and ever, they're going to have the internet back up eventually and that's how most people do research now.  I think a bigger, under-utilized resource is the librarian.  They know EVERYTHING and what they don't know, they can find out for you pretty quickly.  I'm going to teach my kid how to have librarians help them with research as they can pull a lot of relevant information really quickly and tell you how they went about doing it, teaching you how to research more effectively.

And when you finally do get your food, it's wrong. Every. Damn. Time.

ProkNo5's lazy roommate would disagree. LMAO!!

HAHAHA!!!! Thank you for bringing that back from the dead. I can't remember who had that on their profile. I tried to show a friend and couldn't find it...is it gone?

Check KOOW's tagline

"Oh, I know. Americans are so fat. But I think Americans would be less fat if Subways had Drive-Thrus because then American's could choose the healthy option." -- ProkNo5's fat, lazy, idiot roommate.

I rode past a Subway outside Zanesville today that had a drive thru.

>feed an army and it all has to be made with the strictest of specifications,

I don't think people really don't want pickles or don't want tomatoes or whatever, it's just to get attention.

I hate the following things: pickles, ketchup, mustard, ranch sauce, tarter sauce, Mac sauce (whatever it is), barbecue sauce... and more.
