No, it wouldn't Because that's the name of the store. Why would you list the owner of the store with a possessive "s" in place of the actual store's name? You're not making sense. That's like if you were going to Skyline Chili and told someone, "Hey, I'm going to Lambrinides', you want anything?"

You need so much help, and I'm only one person. The word store is implied. If someone was going to visit you, would they say, "I am going to MoonlightOhio," or would they say, "I am going to MoonlightOhio's."? The noun home, house, place of business, is implied.

Sort of like ending a sentence in a preposition. Which is proper?

Where is Kroger's Grocery Store at? or:

Where is Kroger's Grocery Store at, a$$hole?

Hit a nerve, did we?

But you're still wrong. It's not "Where is Kroger's Grocery Store?" It's, "Where is THE Kroger Grocery store?" And you know how I know this? Because it's Kroger and not Kroger's. But yes, if someone was coming to visit me, they'd say "Hey, I'm going to Josh's house." Because the house is mine. But since Kroger is an establishment, adding a possessive "s" would the equivalent of saying that you're going to the building in which Kroger resides. And really, how stupid is that?

So we should call it Lowe, and not Lowes.  How about McDonald instead of McDonalds.

One pet peeve of mine is hot coffee. I am talking about ultra hot coffee like McDonalds. I like to be able to drink my coffee when I get it, not have to wait 15 minutes for fear of scalding my mouth.

Yeah, I can't drink coffee for a good 10-15 minutes after I get it.  My mom's the complete opposite.  She makes coffee with boiling water and then puts it in the microwave to make it even hotter.  I don't get it.  Or understand it, physically.

N/A. the proper name of both includes an S.  LOWE'S is the name of the store. (see image on their website)  McDonald's is the proper name of the restaurant.

Precisely.  Had the Kroger Company been so inclined to put "Kroger's" on the front of every location, that would be the name of business.  Since they didn't, "Kroger's" is incorrect.

I hate that too lol. That's why prefer energy drinks over drinking mud.

The reason it's so hot when you get it is because a comfortable mildly hot temp. is one in which bacteria grows really fast.

My mom can drink it boiling hot, too. It probably has something to due with the fact that she knocked most of her teeth out as a kid and most of her teeth are porcelain. Although she doesn't do the microwave thing.

Maybe they could clean their coffee pots more often than every week?

That's why I rarely drink iced tea from restaurants*.  The stuff's loaded with bacteria.  I can't do energy drinks, though.  They ALL taste like something that should never be ingested.

* the iced tea I previously mentioned getting at the McDonald's drive-thru is never for me.  It's for my lady, who drinks it like water.

you don't end a sentence with a preposition.

You can in Ohio.  We're known for that.

David, where was the photo that is your avatar taken?

Nope, Grammar isn't taught anymore.  Unfortunately, so many people are so bad with grammar that due to common usage the rules are actually changing.  People use prepositions all the time at the end of a sentence.  I mean, even people that care typically don't know how to use a semi-colon.

Other words or phrases that annoy me: nauseated (not sure why, it just does), Facetious (i think people use it because it sounds better than "sarcastic" but they use it wrong), irregardless, and reverse-racism (because the reverse of racism is acceptance.  Racism is racism).

I hope you don't drink draft beer from restaurants very often then.  If you only new how often the lines going back to their kegs are cleaned out....some of the establishments of course, not all.

People who lick their fingers while they're eating.

"Where is Kroger's Grocery Store at?"  BTW, this is also wrong because you don't end a sentence with a preposition.

While I agree that "Where is _____ at?" is poor grammar, I have to also say that a pet peeve of mine is hearing that ending a sentence with a preposition is always wrong.  This is not true; it is sometimes permissible (and even preferable) to end a sentence with a preposition, notably in the example of "That is the sort of thing up with which I will not put."

Now, if we were speaking French or Latin, then yes, one ought never to end a sentence with a preposition.  Alas, we are stuck with our mongrelized English.  BLAME CHAUCER.

I drink beer often enough to be able to tell if the lines were cleaned or not.  :)

Since we are kinda on the grammar thing...and this is not a pet peeve but more of an amusing southern tendency that I give my Mom a good ribbing on:

onced (once)

twiced (twice)

dest (desk)

Speaking of licking fingers while eating:

onced (once)

twiced (twice)

....fee tines a mady....

I'd rather you said something like "this is something that i will not tolerate."

We've really lost our vocabulary.  I see this all the time, today my coworker asked me if the following was a word or a typo: procure.

I have worked with a couple of people from Scotland. That is scary.

Although when I started there it took me a month to realize that it wasn't the accent or pronunciation or even the slang that made our one manager so hard to understand. It was the fact that he had no idea what he was talking about and was speaking nonsense to begin with.

Another pet peeve: people who say things like, "If you don't speak English, get out!"  This country has no official language and was founded by the immigrants of many cultures.  If you can't accept that, then YOU get out.

As a bilingual person, with relatives who were not born american citizens, I agree with those people!  However, it's all in how you say "english only".  If you came to the country and can't or for most cases wont learn english, why did you come here?

Because even in that circumstance, it's better than what you came from?  Not exactly a new concept, MTS.

Because even in that circumstance, it's better than what you came from?  Not exactly a new concept, MTS.

No honey, that sometimes, correct.  My uncle could have stayed in Panama.  His family is loaded - Oprah style.  So not everyone that comes to the states is poor or oppressed.

Now, if you did come from an impoverished background/country.  Why avoid learning english??  If you aren't going to learn english, how can you seriously think you're going to better yourself and elevate yourself above the level you were at in your previous location??

Learn english or go back to where you came from and this is from a person who speaks Spanish about 50% of the time.  Most of my mothers siblings speak in Spanish as a first choice, but everyone knows and speaks english.  Keep in mind my mother family went to school, before schools in PR went bilingual.

If you move here, learn english!  PERIOD!  I know people who are doctors, lawyers or other professions, but because they have not learned english they are relegated to menial jobs.  Again, why did you come here??

I completely agree with this.  And I have this argument nearly daily now.  Spanish is taking over Milwaukee and I HATE the fact that I can't communicate with half the people in my own city.  Hell, our bus schedules are written in Spanish now.  Nearly all of my relatives are whining and complaining and falling behind as a result.  This country has no official language, everything here has always been driving by a critical mass, and the tide is turning.  Suck it up and get on board.

Haha everything that comes out the mouth of a Scot is pure nonsense.

I didnt take ANY foreign language until i got to high school, where i took 3 years of Spanish and walked out knowing pretty much nothing. If anything this will get more schools teaching a second and third language in lower grades now.

And you'll note that I never said anything about being poor or oppressed.  I said "better."  You're the one that interpretted that as being strictly financially better.  Says a little something about you, hmm?

Now, if you did come from an impoverished background/country.  Why avoid learning english??  If you aren't going to learn english, how can you seriously think you're going to better yourself and elevate yourself above the level you were at in your previous location??

The short answer is, I don't know.  But I'm not ALL people, and I can't look into people's heads and see why they do what they do.  What I CAN do is choose not to judge.  And since immigrating to the U.S. and not learning English doesn't hurt me, I'd have no reason to judge in the first place.

Why do you care, is the bigger question?

I am all for people speaking whatever language they want bewteen each other or in private, but I do believe if you choose to live in the United States you should aim to have learn a functional level of English.

It is not exactly," Speak English or go home", It is "Learn English so that you can participate in society"...

My pet peeve is people that b!tch and complain about people's accent when the actual English is correct, especially those from India, Korea or other Asian countries where the cadence of the speaking is different than English.

Edit: Thank you Mayday!!!

You people need to learn a second language.  We're taking over!!  Wepa!

"No offense, but....." or "I'm not racist, but...."

Everytime these lines come out something offensive or racist is going to follow. Just because you say this little line does not mean you are safe or no one can get mad at you for it. Because after, you did mean no harm by it right?

MyTwoSense and Moonlight - get a f#cking room already. ::)

I think moonlight brings up some common issues on the subject.  We're not arguing just stating our facts on both sides of the subject.  I like moonlight, he's spunky without being c-dawg.  ;)

The Spanish/Spanglish language is taking over our country.  It's along with immigration are hot button issues.

I can tell you first hand that if you start anything that you are going to to your wife with "No offense, but..." that is pretty much a guarantee that she will be offended. And get mad at you...  :-D

But seriously I know what you mean.

Well my view is from a more personal persepctive.  I do think people should learn english or go home.  If you have no real desire to participate in society but sponge of the system, then you shouldn't be here.

Ooh, look at the leaps we're making today, eh?  Are you saying that if a person immigrates to the U.S. and doesn't learn the language they're "sponging off the system?"

Because if so, that's quite a statement.

Yeah, two years of a foreign language was mandatory for me.

At least he will be well dressed.

To me when the "Speak English or go home" crowd says that, they mean just that. Speak English only or go home. I guess what I really meant was "Learn English so that you can participate in society or go home".

I know a second language it's called Engineer. However since I can barely speak English I think my chances of learning a second language at this point without being stuck in a foreign country are practically zilch.

Not parochial Catholic schools :(  Or at least they didn't pre-1998.
