Being in a restaurant with some family a few tables away from the African American mayor of your city and then having said family members talk about a bad black waiter, or some crazy Mexican (as though the race of the person had some relevance).  I hurriedly raised a menu to cover my face in a useless attempt to distance myself from my semi-racist family member.

Just got the solicitation for our PAC  (Political Action Commmitee) at work in interoffice mail....

Ugh I used to get those when I worked at a prior company. While they couldn't legally make you donate...you had to donate, and they had a predetermined amount you had to give based on your title.

They also loved the 'fair share' for annual donation to United Way. It was some crazy sh!t, too, like 1.8% of total salary. B!tch, please. Again, donating less got you a call from your manager explaining the importance of United way. I always did $26 annual donations, taken out as $1 per pay period.

Wow.They try to make the PAC a big deal but most of the employees don't care. They get plenty done with the influence they have.

As far as the United Way, I think I am up to $3 a week. I never realized that it is a racket everywhere else, too. (The arm twisting for collection, is the racket, not the United Way. So an executive has bragging rights in the Steam room at the CC. Awesome). We have a month long Harvest for Hunger drive which basically every floor raises money by selling food. There is something a little perverse about promoting guttony for hunger charity.

BTW AJ how goes the new job?

First week under my belt, so far so good. Spent a lot of time traveling to PA last week for training, orientation, etc. This is my first week in the office, so I'm just trying to get my rhythm down.

BTW, on day one, one of the orientation forms was my United Way charitable donation form, with the requisite guilt trip. So, I'm up to $10 per pay now  :x

Every time I visit my grandma she's constantly lecturing me on what I need to do or if she has company over she will start talking about humiliating moments of my life or dumb decisions I've made, in front of other people, for kicks. She's the most negative person I've ever known! Who the heck wants to be around that? It got to a point, a couple years ago, where I couldn't stand to be around her so I stopped swinging by but I realized she isn't going to be around forever (she's 80). I figured I better just accept her for the mean, old, grumpy woman that she is and check up on her regularly. Its like all old people are either really negative/bitter/grumpy or really happy and positive. Has anyone else noticed that? My other grandparents are the total opposite. They always encourage me and spread positive energy. Every time I talk to them they have good news or something positive to talk about. I love being around them.

Good to hear!  If you are inheriting employees, make sure to evaluate each of their past performance reviews.  Someone in the group will be a hater because you got the job/position they felt they were qualified to be in.

It's important to establish guidelines and expectations on day one!

I don't have any underlings yet other than the existing admin. I'm starting from scratch. First I have to establish a market, then employees / support come after. Right now it's me, my laptop and a BB. Employees are prob 6 months down the line once I've established some kind of pipeline.

BTW, pet peeve # whatever....Company gives me laptop w/ broadband access (that's good!), but disables the wi-fi (that's bad). Company gives me a blackberry (good!) but doesn't allow texting (WTF?). Now I have a workaround, but it's cumbersome.

Also, can we just please establish that Microsoft is the corporate standard, and stop making me use off-branded email programs? I've spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to import my old address book into this new program, and the wrap up is, they don't match up. Looks like I have a nice boring task for the assistant...

Get rid of the Admin.  You want to hire your admin.  They are your guard dog.

I've never had an assistant I didn't hire.  I hired Thing No. 1.  Thing No. 1 recommended Thing No. 2, we put him through the ropes and he stayed.  When I was fired when the music business was sold, I made sure they got paid.  When I was rehired for my new position, I brought them with me. When I promoted Thing No. 1, he had to find his replacement and he and Thing No. 2 found Thing No. 1a.

Thing No. 1 has worked with me for 13 years and Thing No. 2 10.  Your admin is the position you really need to make sure you know and unconditionally trust, as they are going to know everything about your life and you need to trust them.

Today, at the Reds game, there was a guy who was jabbering on his cell phone during the entire National Anthem.

Situations like that, and when someone in the next seat on the train is yapping on one incessantly about nothing out of boredom, are why I'd like to have a cell phone jammer. I know they're illegal to use and difficult to obtain, but ...

Used discreetly and with respect for people's essential business, and with a range of about 20-30 feet, I think sometimes one would be a blessing.

She's 80. She gets me mixed up with other people and the stories get twisted. Last month she told me I shouldn't blow so much money at strip clubs! She's gets me confused with my brothers; one of which moved to Vegas and made a lot of money from his job so he would go to casinos and strip clubs alot. I don't even like strip clubs; I'd rather go to a bar, buy a girl a couple drinks and later watch her strip for free.

Last time I saw her she had on Diesel shoes and was bragging about a $60 pair of socks she had on! And she's always going around telling people how to spend their money when she splurges money she doesn't have? lol

I hate all of these Michigan flags on peoples porches in Columbus. People in Columbus will be Michigan fans even though they never went to U of M and have never lived in Michigan. You're supposed to support your home team. That's like me putting up a Mexico flag in my front yard.

^Michigan fans who have no connection to the school or even the State are definitely annoying.

Ohio State fans with no connection to the school are rather annoying as well

^Michigan fans who have no connection to the school or even the State are definitely annoying. In fact I'm usually skeptical of fans of teams like the Lakers, Yankees, etc. Their fandom is not rooted in the heart or out of some sort of allegiance to a city, region, or state. They just root for a team that wins because it's easy....and because Nike and ESPN tell them to.

That is true to a degree but when I lived in NJ I knew more Mets fans than Yankees fans. Now living in central pa, I'm still a Yankees fan and will always be a Yankees fan. My area in PA is big on the Yankees though because Mike Mussina was born in Williamsport and grew up in Montoursville. It's a little annoying and that's where the bandwagon comes into play.

It would make sense for someone growing up in Jersey to be a NY fan of some sort.

North Jersey is pretty much Metropolitan NYC, no matter if some areas are rural or not. Our networks were directly from NY, no affiliates, so the majority of our media was NY based. Living in northwestern Jersey, I did get a lot of Lehigh Valley radio and TV but it was mostly New York.

^Same with living in PA and not liking Penn State.  I am a Penn State fan, but sometimes I'll say something positive about OSU or another Big Ten team and I get a lot of flack.  People need to relax a bit haha.

How exactly do you pick your favorite team? By which mascot is your favorite animal? Because they win most of the time? Because you have a crush on one of the players? I don't get it.

Have you guys had your Grand tested?  My my abela, my mom and here siblings have been discussing have my grand father tested for Alzheimer's.

He keeps refers to my 12 year old cousin as me and on some days doesn't remember to ride around the park with the kids.

How about where you go/went to school, or the school from your city?  I root for USC (my school) and UC (the team from my city that I grew up rooting for).  I could really care less about Ohio State, although I do root for them most of the time if they're on tv.

I live in Milwaukee but I LOVE Cincinnati, so I'm a Reds fan even at Brewers games.

Ohio State is THE sports franchise of central Ohio.  Outside that part of the state it's not nearly as big a deal.  It makes sense that sports fans near UC or the MAC schools might follow their home teams instead.  Note that Cleveland doesn't have a major college football program, so it's got a lot of Buckeye fans too.  But it's also got quite a few Michigan fans.

Where are you from? It's cool you are so passionate about Cincy, particularly without being from there. It certainly is an awesome city! :) I'm glad you discovered it.

I often find sports fans in general more than a little annoying.

I often find sports fans in general more than a little annoying.

Good point. Agreed!

there are rules about being a sports fan...of course, i'm overly obsessed with them.

If you root for a school you should have an actual connection to that school...i know this cuts out a lot of people...and it's a bit snobbish...so, i'm a little more lax on this.  I don't think that it's okay, however, to say "well, my school sucked, so i picked the team that was winning a lot"...this mentality leads to bandwagon fandom.

If you grew up in a city that had a professional sports team...that's your team.

If you have a team that you root for, and they lose or are out of the playoffs...you are not allowed to cheer for a team from the same division or conference.  Those are your rivals and you must not root for a rival.

If you move to a new city that has a pro team you're allowed to go to those games and even hope to see that team win...but, remember...that is not your team.  *This is out the window if that team is a rival of your team.

You aren't allowed to root for rival schools in different sports.  I see this all the time back home.  "I'm a Michigan football fan, but i root for Michigan State in basketball."  This is crap.  Rivalry means something.  it's friendly hatred...and "friendly" is loosely used here.

If you grow up in the sticks and didn't have a sports team nearby...i'd pick the one that represents the state or the region.  I knew several people that grew up on the west side of Michigan that all rooted for the Chicago teams, but then Chicago is closer than Detroit.  This also makes me hate the Cubs more.

I'm sure that i have a number of other rules in my head...but, i can't think of them.

And yes, people that break these rules of mine are all pet peeves.

1) Flash mobs!

This is the second time I've been caught up in a singing flash mob!

2) People who cannot take pictures!

Dont ask me to model for you then you fuck up all the damn pictures!

I disagree with some of your rules as follows…

Picking another team just because they win a lot is unacceptable, but I don’t feel you need a connection to the school to become a fan. For example, my wife went to Kent, I went to Akron, and Cleveland State, my brother went to Youngstown State, and neither of my parents went to school in Ohio, but I’ll cheer for OSU because I’m from Ohio and none of the schools I have a connection with has a decent football team or places any emphasis on their football team.

If you grew up in a city that had a professional sports team...that's your team.

Add the suburbs to this and I’ll agree in general. Exceptions would be if your parents were from some other city and raised you to cheer for said city’s team. For example if I got offered the job I am trying to get in Indy (knock on wood), there’s no chance any child of mine will be cheering for the Colts.

If you have a team that you root for, and they lose or are out of the playoffs...you are not allowed to cheer for a team from the same division or conference.  Those are your rivals and you must not root for a rival.

There are some rivals that I’d rather see win. If the Bengals or Stealers were in the playoffs I would cheer for them as I know people in those cities and would rather at least my friends be happy. If anyone is playing Baltimore I reserve the right to declare myself of said Raven stomper for the day.

If you move to a new city that has a pro team you're allowed to go to those games and even hope to see that team win...but, remember...that is not your team.  *This is out the window if that team is a rival of your team.

Absolutely agreed.

You aren't allowed to root for rival schools in different sports.  I see this all the time back home.  "I'm a Michigan football fan, but i root for Michigan State in basketball."  This is crap.  Rivalry means something.  it's friendly hatred...and "friendly" is loosely used here.

The exception to this is if one of those schools doesn’t have a team in one of the sports.

Also, if you grow up between two metropolitan areas that have professional sports teams, you may pick from between those two, not some team on the other side of the country.

I'm sure that i have a number of other rules in my head...but, i can't think of them.

My addition to this would be that you may not, under any conditions, cheer for someone because they claim to be “America’s Team”, or just because their games are regularly nationally televised (Yankees, Fighting Irish).

Yeah, i can see where you might do this.  Which is why i said that I'm more lax on this rule.  I know there are a lot of people out there that didn't go to school and it's really snobby to say they can't be fans.  I guess i would put an addendum on this one...if you didn't go to this school, don't talk $%*# to people that are rivals of that school that have a degree from there.  I've had a number of run-ins with UofM fans that never went to college where they've told me what i can do with my degree from MSU.

Add the suburbs to this and I’ll agree in general. Exceptions would be if your parents were from some other city and raised you to cheer for said city’s team. For example if I got offered the job I am trying to get in Indy (knock on wood), there’s no chance any child of mine will be cheering for the Colts.

when i said the City i meant the metro-area, so...we agree.  Also, any child of mine will grow up in a Detroit/MSU household.  There will be no exceptions to this rule.

There are some rivals that I’d rather see win. If the Bengals or Stealers were in the playoffs I would cheer for them as I know people in those cities and would rather at least my friends be happy. If anyone is playing Baltimore I reserve the right to declare myself of said Raven stomper for the day.

I don't see it.  My friends happiness means nothing to me when it comes to their sports teams.  I want my friends teams to lose so that they know my misery.

You aren't allowed to root for rival schools in different sports.  I see this all the time back home.  "I'm a Michigan football fan, but i root for Michigan State in basketball."  This is crap.  Rivalry means something.  it's friendly hatred...and "friendly" is loosely used here.

-The exception to this is if one of those schools doesn’t have a team in one of the sports.

Hm...i don't think so.  Rivalry doesn't allow such middling feelings.  Of course, if a school is small enough to not have a team but another school does...maybe that's not a real rival.  I guess i'd need an example.

Also, if you grow up between two metropolitan areas that have professional sports teams, you may pick from between those two, not some team on the other side of the country.

True.  I can see where Columbus would be a weird place for picking a baseball team.

My addition to this would be that you may not, under any conditions, cheer for someone because they claim to be “America’s Team”, or just because their games are regularly nationally televised (Yankees, Fighting Irish).

Totally unacceptable...of course, i grew up as an ND fan because my grandfather was a huge ND fan...i think that it was more acceptable back when he was growing up in the 30s...since they represented the entire catholic faith and in particular the Irish.  Of course, i dropped all allegiance to them a long time ago.

That's absolutely fine. What annoys me is that in cities like Columbus where there is a big college football franchise, you have so many Michigan fans who have no ties to the school or even the state. City gov't needs to order that Columbus-based Michigan fans be rounded up and forced into Eddie George's Grill kicking and screaming. Maybe they could install a torture chamber in the basement too :)

Muahaha I may splurge and run out of money but I'll never run out of funny  :-P

Everyone should just accept the reality of the situation and become NY sports fans. Yessssssss!

ESPN can't have that...we need to be portioned out so that 1/3 are NY sports fans, 1/3 are Boston sports fans and 1/3 are LA sports fans.

Bah, if ESPN had as much clout in the sporting world as it thinks it has, then Connecticut would still be the proud home of the Whalers.

Here's a pet peeve. Why is ESPN so dead set on LeBron leaving cleveland. Any ESPN commentator discussing the situation doesn't even acknowledge the slightest possibility that he's staying in CLE, and that it's a foregone conclusion that it's either the Bulls (Jalen Rose), the Heat (Stephen A. Smith), or some combination of NY/NJ (Mike & Mike).

I think I need to find another outlet for sports info....

I realize these are kids and I couldn't ad any "commentary"

But you don't take pictures and brag about how fabulous a photographer are when:

  • You cut the model/models our of pictures or crop them wrong
  • You're lighting is inappropriate
  • The stylist on your team doesn't catch things on the model.  I broken swimsuit, wrinkled pants, straps on helmets, etc.

I was doing her a favor, because her male model, flaked and his sizes were close to mine.

As in wardrobe malfunction?

Since I bike to work everyday, I hate when people try to cram in with me in the FREIGHT elevator.

There are 8 passenger elevators and 1 freight elevator.  Why must you enter the freight elevator with no freight?????????  Why must you get off on the 5th floor requiring me to adjust my bike into positions that make me uncomfortable interrupting what should have been a continuous ride to the 18th floor  These aren't clueless people who have never been in the building before and don't know the difference.  They are just plain lazy because they don't want to wait the 2 seconds it takes for the doors to open for a passenger elevator.  There is always one waiting at the lobby...no matter what.

A silent ride wouldn't be so bad but the "So you ride your bike, huh?  It's really ______ [cold, hot, snowy, rainy, windy, early, dangerous,] out there.  Don't you get ______[hot, sweaty, freeze, dirty, feel unsafe] kind of comments get old and on my nerves.

I'm a friendly person....really, I'm incredibly approachable, but I hate elevator conversations, especially when the space is tight and steel pedal is jammed into my leg because someone is taking up space

Yep, but I didn't know until I saw the pic.  It looks ridiculous and sad that the stylist or photographer said nothing.  No wonder they got such poor grades.

In one group of pic, about seduction, it looks like I'm strangling or physically abusing the poor girl, plus the lighting is really bad.

This implies that ESPN cared at all about Hockey.

The reason ESPN wants Lebron to go elsewhere is because all those cities are bigger markets.  The thought of Lebron in NY or Chicago or Miami with another star and winning championships gives them an engorgement.

I completely agree... it says "I want to like professional sports, but I don't understand enough to watch a team grow and develop on its own. I'm going to pick the team that spends one metric crapload of money every year (Cowboys and Yankees), or has a bunch of super famous people as fans (Lakers)."

People who "accidentally" call you for a booty call when they meant to call someone else.  That's just sloppy and tacky!

Oh, I dunno; I might just play along. I've 'bout reached the point where I'll settle for whatever I can get.

Not at 11:30  I nodded off while watching the GG's.  I was a little groggy. The phone rang and this how the conversation went.

ME:  Hello

Idiot:  Hey wussup, what are you doing?

ME:  It's 11:30 I'm sleeping like most normal people.  Who the hell is this?

Idiot:  Like you don't know who this is?  You didn't say that the last time I came over and ____ ____ ___ up.

Me:  (looking at the phone) WHAT?  Who the f*ck is this? (looking at phone caller ID)

Idiot:  So wussup

Me:  Craig why are you calling me at 11:30, talking shit.  You know I don't get down like that.

Idiot:  (pause and silence) Mario?

Me:  No this isn't Mario....

Idiot: oh shit. (silence)

Me: Dumbass!

I just hung up.  So I don't expect to hear from him.  I could care less that he's having relations with others it the fact that he called the wrong man.  That amateur and sloppy.

And to top it off, my nephew is cracking up.

Who needs that?
