For God's sake, could the newspaper stick to the news?

I hate the enquirer as it is...but now they are putting links to blogs and advertising in with their news content.  Today they've got a link to Building Cincinnati...and while i have no objection to the content of the blog and make no assertions about the quality of the info contained therein, the newspaper shouldn't be putting it in with the rest of their news.

They've got links to mommy forums and homeopathic quack medicine among other things...all in their "news" section on the website.

Eff them, i hate that they're the source of news around here.

Did you purposefully or coincidentally post that underneath an article from the New York Times whining about sales reps in clothing stores?  Hell, I’d much rather have links to blogs than whiny editorials like that! It’s one thing to just link to outside bloggers who might be whining and complaining, but for the journalists employed by the paper to be doing it? Annoying.

For God's sake, could the newspaper stick to the news?

What annoys me is people constantly b!tching about the Enquirer. The Dispatch is way worse. They repeatedly give misinformation in their news articles because they don't do much research. The Enquirer is a great paper. People on here complain that they're "too conservative". People have actually been fired from The Enquirer for being too conservative. Reporters have blogs and Twitter; they're just trying to plug-in to the different ways in which people get information. If the site can become a sort of bridge to different forms of media, it offsets the high cost of printing newspapers and delivering them (which they need since sales are declining).

Sorry, read a post wrong and posted bad numbers.

For a way worse paper they sure have a greater circulation even with a smaller MSA.

Columbus is a much bigger city and Cincinnati's MSA includes Indiana and Kentucky, where different papers are going to be more pertinent to some people. That's neither here nor there, though. Circulation isn't going to change my opinion. Fox News is BY FAR the most viewed news channel; enough said.

I haven't said anything about their political stance, other than the editorial page their views don't really come into it.  My issue is that they are no longer providing news if they link to some of that crap.  News is not a forum post where uninformed people are spewing garbage.  News is not linking to a homeopathic clinic that scams people out of their money and advocates dangerous procedures.  Just because people do these things, doesn't mean that there is any fact or anything that should be reported in the newspaper.  By linking to these places, it lends credibility to them and helps promote.

I don't accept that.

Start your own newspaper and website for Cincinnati and see how far you get without "garbage" like links to homeopathic medicine while ad revenue and circulation is declining across the board. Newspapers have always been filled with scams. Ever seen a classified ads section?

If you don't accept it, then don't go to the site. Gannett isn't posting its highest profits in 3 years because of you.

profit does not = credibility.

I don't care if they put this stuff in a clearly marked advertising section.  Unfortunately, on their website they will include these links without any demarcation and in the same list as all other stories.  There isn't anything to indicate that they don't go to a story within the newspaper's website.

I try not to go there, but the quality of news isn't much better at any of the other news sources.

by the way, i'm not sure that Gannett is posting high profits because of their quality...besides, the last 3 years have been horrible to newspapers leading to layoffs, forced furloughs etc.  I'd question whether or not the profits are true profits or a result of write offs and acquisitions.

THAT'S HOW THEY ARE ABLE TO MAKE MONEY. You think people would click if there were a junk ad section of the site? Do you realize how bad the industry is struggling? Come on man, you're denying people a way of making a living.

Yeah, they can't afford to give staff enough hours to do good quality work. Then you have much of the broader news essentially being a summary of a press-release or borderline-plagiarized from The Associated Press.

Have you looked at the enquirer lately?  most of the paper is from the AP.

If the Enquirer wants to trick people into clicking on ads then they have no business claiming to be a news source.  They lose credibility and any pretense of independence.

They're included in the byline. You're allowed to use their material as long as you give them credit.

They're included in the byline. You're allowed to use their material as long as you give them credit.

I'm not saying anything about plagiarism.  they have every right to use the AP...i think they're part of it, right?  that's how it works?  you're part of the AP or Reuters? that sort of thing?

anyway, advertising on the website: fine...disguising advertising as "news"...not okay.  The blog post from Building Cincinnati that today was disguised as a news story is unacceptable...not because of the content of the post, but because of the context.  I can't condemn them for doing it once unless i condemn them for doing it always.

I think Reuters was formed for digital outlets as a reaction to AP unwillingness to give out their information to them. You're right, AP is non-profit and large print media companies are members, with Gannett being on the board. They give much more of their resources/tools to member newspapers than outsiders. They even report state and local news but last I heard they don't sell those wires to digital-only media but maybe that changed. If you're not a member, you have to subscribe to their content to receive limited access. That's where a lot of AP's revenue is coming from and it ultimately helps print media.

What I'm saying is that papers can't afford to pay people enough hours to really dig and do a lot of research. That's the reason why so much of the news is simply summarized from them. Also, you have press releases that end up being very long and thorough so that they can be summarized for your niche audience and contain all of the information needed. It's like that responsibility is shifting away from reporters.

I think BuildingCincinnati is a great blog, personally. How is he not credible enough to be on the site if he's interviewing, going out to attend local proposals or meetings to get his information and writes in AP style? He's doing the same thing that any other credible reporter would do.

All of You ...

Here's my pet peeve: Handicap parking spaces. First of all, these spaces that are essentially prime real estate, hardly ever get used. Secondly, (and I know you guys are all going to be like "David how can you be so evil and insensitive") those same people can effectively move just as much as anybody else. Need proof? Look at all of the places you go to with handicap spots. Large shopping centers. Malls. Big Box stores like Target or Wal-Mart. A typical person has to walk probably a half of a mile through a mall to get to their destination store and back. If you can do all of that, then walking 30 feet to the entrance as opposed to 15 feet is hardly going to make a difference. What's scary is that the ADA recognizes obesity as a handicap so they're basically enabling a lot of people to be lazy and receive special accommodations when they're the ones who need to walk the most. Wtf  :wtf:

Many handicap parking spaces, at least around here, are extra-width, in order to allow for extending wheelchair ramps from vans. Providing easier access to wheelchair-dependent shoppers is reasonable.

What I see a lot, especially at places like Lowe's, are the morons who finish with a lumber cart or other oversized, heavy cart, and then shove it into one of the handicap spaces as if they're too stupid to tell the difference between that and a cart corral. A handicap space blocked by a cart is just as useless as one with a car parked in it. Store management will never address the issue with the offenders or ask the cops for enforcement, because they fear offending a customer. Once in a moment of cluelessness I said something to a guy who left a flatbed cart in a handicap space, and came near to getting punched.

Every time i turn on the History Channel there's this show about gangs, called Gangland. What does that have to do with History? They act like gangs are taking over American cities and  they glorify it. They always have some ignorant fool on there talking with a bandana covering his face. One guy was like, "When I wake up in the morning, first thing I do is throw up a gang sign!" Really? :? The first thing I do when I wake up is take a p!ss.
