Posted September 10, 200816 yr Hi, I am moving from Detroit to Cleveland and will be working in the 'financial district' for one of the banks downtown. I'd like to be able to walk to work, and still live in a nice clean place. I have been told E. 4th Street would be good, which I plan on visiting, but those are just about full from what I hear. I have been told the warehouse district, but that walk could get alittle long in the winter. Plus while it seems the places there (bridgeview, bingham) are nice, your paying quite a bit more to live next to all that nightlife. I have also been told Reserve Square and Statler Arms on E 12th. These seem very short walks to the financial district and am told are still safe. Any thoughts on these or additional insights? I plan to come out this weekend to visit places. Thanks!
September 10, 200816 yr i'd also check out the osborn and huron square apts. run by the same people. right on the corner of 9th and Prospect, short walk to the banks. I've lived in the Osborn 5 years and like it a lot. http://www.huronosborn.com/overview

Welcome.  Have you check the Cleveland Relocation Guide? Anything in downtown Cleveland to the Banking Wall (East ninth street) is walkable year round. In addition there is the free trolley. Check some of the other recent Cleveland threads, which will probably answer many questions, then report back here with any additional questions you might have.
September 10, 200816 yr All those you listed are great places to live. My advice would be to visit all of them and see for yourself where you would enjoy the most. And of course if you have anymore specific questions, feel free to ask!
September 10, 200816 yr Yeah, I'd enjoy being by nightlife, but am not an ex-frat boy that will be out partying 5 nights a week. I like the balance of relaxing after 10+ hour days at work but being able to walk to places on the weekends. That's why I am a bit hesitant about 4th street and warehouse district. Since from what I have read it gets pretty roudy and loud that close to the bars. Maybe I am wrong? thats the the Osburn suggestion, I hadnt heard of that one yet.
September 10, 200816 yr It gets roudy on East 4th sometimes, I won't lie. It isn't too bad during the week, though, except sometimes after special events. And running my HVAC units blocks out most of the noise of drunk suburbanites. But if that isn't good enough than Reserve Square, Statler Arms, or Huron/Osborn buildings are probably your best bets.

Who are you getting your information from? West 6/9 (the warehouse district) and East 4th/Gateway are two different neighborhoods, with different clientele and environments. The warehouse district is more club-by and a party atmosphere while the Gateway district is more unique and what I would term as casual upscale. In my opinion/experience East 4th is never terribly loud or rowdy even on game nights.
September 10, 200816 yr I would consider E. 4th. In the next year or so it will definitely be the place to be. There will be more units opening up soon as well. It is cheaper than warehouse district and probably closer for you to walk. I personally dont like reserve square, but that doesnt mean someone else wouldnt. Osborn is very nice as well. I dont think East 4th gets rowdy like the warehouse district. They are not clubs on east fourth, its fine dining, comedy and most people are indoors. There arent places with music blasting out the door and long lines.
September 10, 200816 yr Ugh. Huron/Osborn is full until Mid-October and I need a place in a couple weeks.
September 10, 200816 yr East 4th is full too? You should probably go warehouse district. If you stay on the southern part closer to St. Clair it shouldnt be as bad. You could also try stonebridge on the west bank of the flats. You could catch the #26 bus at detroit and west 25th and it will take you right downtown. (3 minute ride)
September 10, 200816 yr I have a friend that lives in Crittenden Court in the Warehouse district. It's doesn't have all the amenities of some of those other places but it's very reasonably priced (~$700/month for 1 Bedroom at 750 sq ft). I've been there several times over weekends and have never had any issues with noise from the clubs and bars. In fact, I don't even remember hearing them from the apartment which faces E9th. I'm 23 and I don't think you'll find the activity in the Warehouse District disruptive at all. Also, don't forget about the free trolley that will take you to the Business District when the weather is foul.
September 10, 200816 yr I hear mixed reviews about reserve square, never heard a good thing about chesterfield, but know a couple people that have lived in the statler and really liked their places. it's also in a good spot for what you're looking for. September 10, 200816 yr There are a number of apartments available along Huron, Prospect and East 4th in the Gateway neighborhood. Try this site to orient yourself: http://www.historicgateway.org/ The walk from the Warehouse District to 9th Street isn't far, even in bad weather. There really isn't anyplace downtown that isn't within walking distance of another place downtown. And as someone else mentioned you can take one of these two free downtown trolleys: http://www.riderta.com/pdf/Bline.pdf http://www.riderta.com/pdf/Eline.pdf Then there's this site for the Historic Warehouse District: http://www.warehousedistrict.org/ (click on District Life) Reserve Square and Statler Arms are bit removed from much of the action right now, though they are closer than other downtown residences to Asiatown between Payne and St. Clair in the East 30s: http://www.asiatowncleveland.com/ That's about it for now. If I can think of other stuff to share with you, I'll pass it along. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 10, 200816 yr I have a call into Statler and they are to call me back with an agent. I have heard about this free trolley a tad. Where can I get the specifics on what it is all about/how it operates/etc? Yeah I think the Critterden is on my hit list for when I come into town Friday. That as well as the Bingham, Waterstreet, Hat Factory, Bridgeview, National Terminal, Reserve Square, and Statler...and 4th Street if they have anything available.

Contact Info: Liza Tholen 1127 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, Ohio 44115 216.696.6800 [email protected] I'm recently took a tour of Statler Arms when my girlfriend was looking for a place... it is gorgeous! Very nice people working there, great security, really nice apartments. Negatives - expensive parking, no real view to speak of, a little pricey imo.
September 10, 200816 yr Detroit2Cleveland, I hope you don't think I'm purposely being mean to you. I just don't want you to buy into the "i heard" crowd as many times they can lead you in the wrong direction or are inaccurate about many areas of Cleveland. X and (Mayor) McCleveland live in the area and i would trust their opinions and recommendations.
September 10, 200816 yr I'd live in/closer to Warehouse district if I were you too. Your primary/only form of a grocery store in close walking distance is over on W 9th street. It's sort of a gourmet type shop but they stock all the basics as well. http://www.constantinosmarket.com/

September 10, 200816 yr D2C- you can find out abotu the trolley here : http://www.riderta.com/ro_downtown.asp Chesterfield isnt bad, it is alot of international students from Cleveland State. They may tell you its slightly overpriced though.

Do you ever shop there? Because I go there pretty frequently. The staff are lazy, rude and unhelpful if not downright hostile, the produce area doesn't even have a SCALE so you can figure out how much you're buying, and the meat is just poor. This is about the equivalent, food-wise of a really big 7-11 compared to Constantino's.

It is in DESPERATE need of a renovation.

September 10, 200816 yr Oh I take no offense at all. I am just passing along what I have been hearing from people in the area. I take everything people say with a grain of salt and thats why I try to get as much input from different people as possible. I had one girl tell me dont live Downtown because nowhere is safe and there are too many shootings. Maybe it's becasue I am from Detroit that I doubt it is that bad, haha. I'll take my chances, we all have to die sometime right? Thanks for all these posts keep'em coming!
September 10, 200816 yr Dude, compared to Detroit you will find downtown Cleveland like a beautiful, deserted park. :)
September 10, 200816 yr 'm curious as to why you say RS and TSA are a bit removed. They are on 13 Street. Step out on the sidewalk at those places on a weeknight or at any time on a weekend and it's just scary-desolate. September 10, 200816 yr I dont have stats to back this up, but realistically downtown is probably one of the safest parts of Cleveland right now. I would consider it safe and fun. I cant recall a shooting downtown in a reeeeeeal long time, I dont know where she got her info.

I cant recall a shooting downtown in a reeeeeeal long time, I dont know where she got her info. This is the main reason why I asked where he got this information from. We all know "some" people have no clue what goes on in the city proper or their perceptions are dead wrong. ...moving on.
September 10, 200816 yr I'd live in/closer to Warehouse district if I were you too. Your primary/only form of a grocery store in close walking distance is over on W 9th street. It's sort of a gourmet type shop but they stock all the basics as well. http://www.constantinosmarket.com/ There is a grocery store in Reserve Square. and FULL grocery store... which comes in quite handy. I agree with KJP above, there really isn't a bad spot downtown in terms of getting where you need to be. The Trolley's link warehouse and gateway quite well (run every 10 minutes, except on weekends... which is key, it means that you'll be spending most of your "going out" time in the neighborhood you choose to live in). I moved to gateway for the same reasons you listed, I wanted to be close to "the action" without it being in my face. I wanted to now that if I stayed in on a Friday or Saturday I wasn't going to inundated with noise. My place has been perfect for that, I can walk to 4th, sports venues, the patio bars by the Clevelander, etc... in seconds, but I'm still a little secluded. Osborn, Huron, Statler, any of the places on 4th, prospect place (all gateway), bingham, bridgeview, 425 lakeside, marshall place (warehouse) are all places I've been to and like. I think Reserve Square since it's remodeling it's a pretty decent place, it's just a little more isolated than the other places. 425 Lakeside is interesting, their one bedrooms aren't particuarly big, but if you don't need a lot of space, they are pretty cool, affordable, and on lakeside, not W.6th so noise isn't as much of a factor. One other nice thing about gateway though... It has CVS on 9th and Euclid, which can come in pretty handy. I know they've been working on trying to get one in WHD for a while, but nothing there.
September 10, 200816 yr you can call and see their status... i think the fact is that right now there is somewhere between a 96-98% occupancy rate downtown, which means it's usually going to be tight... but there is always turnover. You've just got to call around and see what's currently available. East Fourth Neighborhood 2057 East 4th Street Cleveland, OH 44115 Phone - 216-589-1111 Fax - 216-589-4993 [email protected]
September 10, 200816 yr yeah east 4th has just one large expensive one bedroom left. Bingham is booked.
September 10, 200816 yr I knew one bedroom rentals in downtown were tight but my goodness. It's good on one hand and bad on the other.
September 10, 200816 yr sooo i hear lakewood is nice? lol. might need to look at a few places in the burbs too at this rate.

September 10, 200816 yr Now in those other areas you mention above. Will I have to pay for parking in my apartment? I don't want to have to pay for parking where I live and then pay again when I drive to work? Thats kind of why I was looking at living in a walkable distance from work. I'd also rather not have to wait for a buss or anything. That being said, I should just check out a brub like Lakewood for proper due dilligence. I have been told the good part of Lakewood is the western half and that the middle and east parts are a little less desireable. Also that the western part has nice bars/restaurants/stores that are walkable. If that is the case does anyone have any apartment complex ideas in that area I should check out tht are good? Remember this is just to compliment my city search so don't flame me too much for looking outside the city as well. haha.
September 10, 200816 yr Try this as a means to find more apartment buildings and phone numbers for downtown apartments (ignore the featured buildings at the top of the listings): http://www.apartments.com/Results.aspx?page=results&subarea3=y&area3=y&state=oh&rgn1=36&prvpg=5&Rent_Minimum=400&Rent_Maximum=1000 There are always apartments available in the Gold Coast area of Lakewood and in the Edgewater neighborhood of Cleveland. There is frequent bus service during rush hours to downtown, with a trip time of 15 minutes or less. September 11, 200816 yr I'll throw my building into the mix here...The Pointe at Gateway. It's located on Prospect by East 9th about 1 block north of The Q and Progrssive Field. However, I think the one bedrooms might be all leased out.

Maybe not: Realty One has a listing for a 700 sf 1 bedroom at $700 per month. http://realtyone.realliving.com/Property/Details.aspx?PropID=10916946 Prospect Place's most affordable 1 bedroom is listed at $945: http://realtyone.realliving.com/Property/Details.aspx?PropID=11088094 Also there are multiple one bedrooms listed at Edgewater Park Manor (9829 Lake) and The Breakers (9823 Lake) in the Edgewater neighborhood for upper $400's to mid $600's per month, but someone from the neighborhood would know better than I - are these quality buildings? Or you and seven friends could rent the 8 bedroom Samuel Mather Mansion in University Circle for $10,500 per month! If you are going to check out Lakewood, might as well check out Shaker Square. You should also check out some places in Ohio City and Tremont. This site is pretty good for rentals: http://www.clv-lofts.com/ The guy who owns these places is a very good landlord. The Ohio City stuff is located in a some cool places. I think that you should also reconsider taking the rapid or bus. In Ohio City, it is very convenient. There are multiple bus routes and if you live along 25th then you wouldn't have to wait any longer than 3-5 minutes before a bus comes along that will take you into the heart of downtown (during rush hour).
September 11, 200816 yr Hi D2C, welcome, and I'm going to join the discussion late. If you haven't called on all the places in the Warehouse District, I would highly recommend it - I had the same concerns about the nightlife when I moved down here and have been pleasantly surprised for a few reasons: 1) The only loud nights are Friday/Saturday. The other nights are great - good crowd, people on the street, but nothing bad. 2) West Sixth is the loudest - although I don't know, I cannot imagine West Ninth being that loud 3) The noise is very dependent on where you live in the building. I live in The Bradley Building, which houses a few VERY loud bars, but I am in the back of the building, and I don't hear anything on the weekends. I have friends come up here who are amazed how quiet it is, but if I took the elevator downstairs and walked out, it'd be a melee of bachelorette parties. Just my two cents - good luck!
September 11, 200816 yr Good stuff everyone. I have several more places to call tomorrow now. Everything can't be full by the time I get there Friday! haha
September 11, 200816 yr Lakewood is fine. There are a couple of problem buildings/neighbors here and there, but you'll get that anywhere. I've lived at the northeast end of Lakewood near the Gold Coast for the past 12 years and had only a few minor problems. However, I was carjacked in Berea, had my car broken into twice in Kent and had to dodge hitting deer in my car at least monthly in the outer suburbs! And Mr. DocBroc had FedEx packages stolen from his front porch in the middle of the day when he lived in Mentor! Meanwhile, I didn't even realize we had a package sitting on our front porch downtown from FedEx yesterday until about 11pm. Amazing how that works :-D.
September 11, 200816 yr There is petty crime everywhere. While my mother and I lived in 2 different apartments in Lakewood, both very close to W 117th near where KJP lives, she got her car broken into twice, I was robbed once and had my outgoing mail stolen and checks forged/re-written and cashed all over town. I had a car window smashed downtown and car was burglarized. My car was broken into when I lived on Warren Rd in Cleveland as well. It happens everywhere.
September 11, 200816 yr Ohio City is a great, cheaper alternative to downtown with at least 1/2 dozen bus lines and the Rapid providing rather frequent connections to downtown and points beyond. There are dozens of food/drink establishments w/in walking distance, not to mention a Dave's supermarket, the Westside Market, numerous banks and other services. I've been here for 15 months and love it! I don't even have a car! As is the case in just about all of Cleveland, you are w/in stumbling distance of many fine places!

We'll if you live in Shaker Square, Ohio City or University Circle/Little Italy you can take the train to get you downtown in 12 to 15 min, then you can transfer to the trolley or walk to E 9th. University Circle/Little Italy/Murray Hill also offers you the option of using the brand spanking new HealthLine. I don't rent, but some of the Shaker Square residents can chime in on indoor parking at their buildings. Keep in mind street parking is available, but a chore. I would also do a search of the photo gallerys and look at the neighborhoods we've mentioned here.
