I know there is a Family Dollar right next door, but is there a chance this Kinsman Plaza new construction is for a Dollar General?

Wasn't there supposed to be a moratorium on "Dollar" type convenience stores by the City of Cleveland coming on line?

It's completely stupid for the City to even think of something like this. Anyway, I thought I heard about it a few weeks ago.

Tell that to Old Brooklyn (see my most recent posting in that thread)!

EDWINS Bakery & Training Center to bring European sweets and breads to Cleveland's Buckeye neighborhood

CLEVELAND — The man behind Cleveland’s pioneering EDWINS Leadership and Restaurant Institute, a place that gives formerly incarcerated adults a foundation in culinary and hospitality, is expanding the opportunities with the EDWINS Bakery and Training Center.

Located at 13106 Buckeye Road, just blocks from Shaker Square, the 2,900 square foot space serves as a diner, bakery and training ground for hands-on education and work experience. The bakery and training center is set to open on Dec. 20.

This bakery will resemble one you would find in a café in Europe, and to ensure the authenticity of the menu offerings, Chrostowski enlisted the guidance from Kurt Zoss, the head baker and instructor at large, formerly of Zoss the Swiss Baker fame.

That's a pretty good strip of buildings.  Lots of parking, lots, but good to see the investment in preserving what is there.  If it really takes off, build on those lots!

That stretch of Buckeye could use a good streetscape plan along with the planned building renovations. Burying the utility lines along that stretch could open up a lot more sidewalk access for outdoor seating. I drive down this road about twice a week from Shaker. Has strong promise with Edwin's campus as a east end anchor and community resources like Providence House moving in mid way.

Not exactly development, but certainly a welcome investment in Buckeye:

Edwins’ second-chance mission expands to housing in Cleveland

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2020/07/edwins-second-chance-mission-expands-to-housing-in-cleveland.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Brandon Chrostowski's vision of offering second chances is branching from its culinary roots into the housing market.

Chrostowski, whose flagship restaurant Edwins Leadership and Restaurant Institute hires and trains recently released incarcerated individuals, has acquired two multi-family homes billed as the initial growth step for the Second Chance Life Skills Center campus. The 20,000 square-foot Buckeye neighborhood-based campus, which was established in 2016, provides for living, working and recreational enrichment.

...

His goal, he added, is to acquire and make available 10 houses within the next few years.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Sounds like "Development" to me!

Five Northeast Ohio projects win Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit awards

Bristol Apartments, Cleveland: The $1.86 million project will renovate a 20-unit apartment building on South Moreland Boulevard for a mix of market-rate and affordable units that will be targeted to local participants in the Teach for America program, a national nonprofit organization that sends new teachers in to low-income schools. The building, constructed in 1929, will retain many of its original features, according to ODSA. The project received $245,000.

Unfortunately this renovation project, estimated at $1,650,000, is on hold. No reason given.

Probably because with the pandemic. There’s  no need for Teach for America since there’s no school.

Woodhill Station transit-oriented development on track

All signals are green for construction of a moderately-sized apartment building across the street from the Buckeye-Woodhill light-rail transit station in Cleveland.

With financing in place, general contractor bids are due to be submitted to developer The Community Builders on Aug. 12, according to the Dodge Reports. Site preparation work could start in November but major construction activity is likely to get under way in the spring.

While I'm not crazy for the site plan (setbacks), I'm thrilled these projects are moving forward. For all the excitement over luxury apartment projects in the hot areas, new affordable (and subsidized) housing in the neighborhoods is even more important.

And the great playground shown in the aerial!

Judging from the picture in the article this building looks fantastic and in no way looks like an eyesore, especially compared to most of Buckeyes side streets! In my humble opinion, these old buildings need to stay.

https://www.cleveland19.com/2020/09/21/buckeye-neighborhood-fights-get-condemned-building-down-new-owner-wants-refurbish-develop/

Those buildings are beautiful. Tearing them down will not only destroy the historic Urban fabric of the neighborhood but leave a gaping hole in the block. There has been a great deal of improvement in it and the owners appear to care.

The photos of the building being used, both in the story and in the petition, are from Google street view from May 2019. While the exterior doesn't look terrible, there are missing windows and you can tell there was damage done from a fire. This was from before the current owner bought it though, and the story talks about them working on the exterior and correcting all of the code violations. It's more than a bit misleading to talk about a building being an eyesore, and then use out dated photos for it. I'd like to know how the building looks like today, after work has been done. It's not right to tear a building down if the owner is actively working to rehab it, and I imagine the city would have a big problem if they tore it down without any code violations.

How people cant view a structure like that as an anchor for catalytic investment is beyond me.

Saying "the neighborhood is fighting" to have the building razed is a weird way to say "Brandon Chrostowski wants this building demolished."

I'm going to try my best to attend. I posted something to the same effect on LinkedIn, but I always love this stretch of road when I'm over that way. Tons of cool buildings that just need some (or in some cases A LOT of) love. Could be a longer Larchmere if it's fully activated. I'm all about reducing the lanes in favor of bike lanes and street parking among other things.

^ this is one of the best stretches of intact buildings in the city. There is so much potential here. One problem they may have is that residents voted years ago to create "dry precinct" which covers a lot of this area. This becomes a challenge to any type of restaurant development.

Benedictine High School to kick off $4.5M centennial campaign this summer

Alex Gray - thelandcle.org - Apr. 5, 2021

Benedictine+south+facade+further+back.jp

"Benedictine High School is preparing for the construction of a new atrium as part of a larger $4.5 million centennial campaign to update the campus. In addition to the atrium, BHS plans on increasing green spaces, remodeling science labs, and a new roof for the St. Andrew Abbey. ... 'As a way to celebrate our 100 years of existence in the Buckeye neighborhood we launched a centennial campaign that was aimed to beautify the campus overall,' Ryzner said."

An unfortunate development hopefully what ultimately replaces it isn't more plazas but unfortunately that is par for the course on the east side

HUD awards Cleveland and CMHA $35-Million grant to transform east side neighborhoods

By Michelle Nicks | May 26, 2021 at 10:13 PM EDT - Updated May 26 at 10:13 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Cuyahoga County Metropolitan Housing Authority and the city were awarded a $35 million federal grant to transform and update east side neighborhoods.

The Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant is needed to rebuild the Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhoods, and that includes the Woodhill Homes. Housing projects were built as one of the earliest in the country, and buildings currently 80 years old.

Really great news.  This is continues the momentum from the revitalized Larchmere up the hill, which coincidentally is where City Architecture is moving their offices and they are the lead architects for this project. Cleveland really is on the rebound.

See the East Side Neighborhood thread.
