Really? You ride the Blue/Green lines yet you call Megabus petri dishes?

Megabus' internet-only ticket purchases bleach out most of the salt-of-the-earth colors from society! Plus there's lots of hot young college girls on board. Clevon Little once asked the question, and the answer is MEGABUS!!!

LMAO!  You are sooooo wrong for that!  Oh Lawd!  Yes the Green/Blue lines are clean enough for me.

Documents: State bus inspections get lax oversight despite concerns raised by deadly crashes

By Associated Press, Updated: Sunday, April 1, 11:37 AM

HOUSTON — Months after their state-certified vehicle inspection station was cited by federal authorities for failing to notice defects in a bus that crashed in North Texas, killing 17 passengers, brothers Alam and Cesar Hernandez shuttered their firm. But that didn’t mean they were out of the vehicle inspection business.

Instead, they opened another station in the same Houston neighborhood and continued to inspect buses like the one involved in the accident. And they did it with the approval of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Hernandez brothers’ story underlines a phenomenon that highway safety advocates say has long existed with deadly consequences — the lack of oversight for the businesses that perform state inspections of buses and other large commercial vehicles.

so, I checked out a R/T Cincy-Chicago on the Greyhound Express for next weekend. Greyhound clearly does not know the meaning of 'express'. It would have taken me 8 hours and 2 (!) transfers in Dayton and Indy on these new Express branded busses Friday evening. Coming back? 9 hours, again with a stop in Indy. The price is right at $72, but i'd gladly pay an extra $10 to ride megabus. Who are they kidding, sheesh.

Also of note, you can reguarly get $160 incl tax R/T CVG-ORD on American or United leaving Friday evening and coming back Monday, which isn't a terrible deal.

Meanwhile I'm right now waiting for the Cleveland megabus outside Chicago Union Station. You guys should see the people here; it's a complete circus. Megabus certainly has changed in the past five years.

I took Megadeth to Chicago and was there on one of those 80-degree days in March. I was amazed to see the mass of humanity, buses and cars dropping off/picking up Megabus passengers competing for space on the street/sidewalk. But it was also very third world.

Where's Megadeath's stop/station in CLE these days?

In my area the radio has been reporting this bus accident as a "double-decker charter bus" accident, failing to mention that it is Megabus.  That's some pretty slick work by Megabus's PR to get their name out of the reporting.

Their stop is on the west side of West Third, just north of Superior.

I took Megabus to Chicago again last weekend and I must say, it is absolutely incredible that they city allows them to operate off of a sidewalk as they do. There are serious safety concerns here. This is in the middle of the city, in an area with plenty of pedestrians and traffic. Megabus uses the entire block for boarding and during peak times there are literally hundreds of people just milling about. There is zero signage about bus status, delays or boarding. No benches and no employees other than the drivers, many of which are some of which carry the most entitled, rotten power-trip attitides I have ever experienced. When it's time to depart, the busses simply pull out into city traffic and off you go. The whole thing is very third world and pretty inefficient (but very cheap to maintain and operate).

That being said, I love the idea of their ultra low cost business model and I think the popularity of the service and full loads on their busses shows what an important and uptapped market they serve. It's such a simple concept but also relatively innovative in the US market where we are accustomed to more frills in our travel experience.

They have grown dramatically in the past year and I suspect that growth has led to a slip in safety standards and a rush to minimize turn times and fully utilize their equipment. Here's to hoping they get their act together.

Just tried to cancel a trip to Chicago on Megabus. Instead it gave me a credit for a future trip on Megabus. When I called the 800 number to ask for a refund, I was told Megabus does not give refunds. Really? Then I won't take Megabus. Ever.

In my book, refusing refunds is theft.

Amtrak gives refunds. So I'm taking Amtrak, even though the westbound trip leaves Cleveland at nearly 3 a.m.

Anyone want to use my $39 Megadeath credit? You have to pay me for the order number to use the credit.

I took the Megabus last Thursday leaving Chicago for Cleveland at 11:30pm. It's such an experience being among the hundreds of people rushing around Union Station, trying to figure out which bus is their's, especially as the buses don't tell you until 5-10 minutes before they leave. It is such a disorganized experience, but kind of humorous too. You just smile, shake your head, and jog to the next bus down Canal ("Ooo, I heard a rumor THIS is the Cleveland bus"....ten minutes later.... "Oh crap, St. Louis)."

The ride itself was hillarious. The bus was incredibly warm when we finally got going, so much that my roommate went to the bathroom to change into shorts. Well...no good. The bus was so bouncy (did it even have shocks?) that he manacled his hand and gave up before there was too much blood loss. Upstairs (we were on the second level of the bus), he says enough is enough and just drops his pants in front of everyone, tighty whiteys and all, to change into shorts. It was dark, sure, but everyone knew what he was doing, and it got a few laughs.

A couple hours of crap sleep later, the bus takes a quick rest stop break, and apparently some passengers tell the driver it's too damn hot. So for the rest of the ride, we're all blue in the face from the air conditioning running like it's being chased. Good god was that an unpleasant four hours.

Fast forward to Sunday night/Monday morning at 12:45am, we get to the Public Square stop fifteen minutes before departure. And we wait. And wait. And wait. OVER A F$$$ING HOUR. Calling Megabus was useless at that hour (frustrating as hell is the understatement of the year, with its bull#hit precorded answers that have NOTHING to do with delays), and it was chilly willy. A cab showed up around quarter till 2, and the cabbie told one of the people waiting that he heard the bus would be here in ten minutes. What? How the hell did he know?

Well, he was somewhat right, as the bus showed up a little after 2. No apology, no acknowledgement, but by then we were too tired/relieved to get angry. The driver didn't even take half of our registration numbers. I mean, it's not like anyone was going to sneak on by then.

We got to Chicago in less than 6 hours, even with a rather long Toledo stop. The driver must have been breaking speed barriers.

Gotta love the Megabus:)

Dispute the charges if you used a credit card.

I might just do that.

Was it a Yellow Cab? If so, the Yellow Cab yard/office is in the Flats at Commercial and West 3rd. The Megabus bus storage, servicing and layover area is across the street.

...i don't know. Was too tired by then to see straight.

Sounds like the bus trips my buddies took in Morocco.

I'm surprised Amtrak offers refunds. Most transportation services don't offer direct refunds. Instead they offer company credit, if anything. airlines rarely offer refunds unless you purchase a special "refundable ticket" which is usually cost prohibitive and you might as well risk being stuck with the ticket/company credit.

I've never had a bad experience riding Megabus (except the wifi not working, but whatever). The worst experience I had was going from NYC to DC. The bus was an older charter bus that wasn't as comfortable. The NYC bus terminal is also pretty confusing when there are dozens of buses lining up to pick up/drop off people. The convenience of Megabus really can't be beat IMO. I took Greyhound for the first time in August and I was ok with it. There was one layover in Indianapolis, but it was $10 cheaper than Megabus. Bolt Bus is almost identical to Megabus in my experience except that Bolt Bus accepts passengers with cash after all of the ticketed riders have boarded. I'm not sure if this was legitimate or if the driver pocketed the cash, though. Seemed a little sketchy. I don't think he counted the people who paid cash in his tally.

Looks like Megabus now offers new service from Cincinnati to: Atlanta, Buffalo, Chattanooga, Knoxville

Columbus & Cleveland also got several new destinations!

The overnight Cleveland to Chicago megabus was FOUR HOURS LATE  on Sunday night/Monday morning. A big FU to there being no communication to people waiting beyond pre-written twitter responses, a big FU for the compensation of $49 and a free round trip, and a huge FU to the Renessaince hotel for kicking us out of their side lobby, making us stand in the cold for HOURS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

A spectacular failure by everyone.

Looks like TBideon won't be riding! I doubt I will either after Megadeath pissed me off too...

EDIT: interesting that the Cincinnati-Buffalo service will actually be provided by Cleveland-based Lakefront Lines which has operated regularly scheduled bus service on this route for many years. But that was only one round trip a day. Now they're offering two daily round trips.

You get what you pay for...and Megadeath won't pay for anything, leaching off everyone else while causing problems. The boarding area in Chicago has become a nuisance. People parking everywhere, blocking traffic, crowded sidewalk making it impossible to walk, etc. Not everyone enjoys Megabus in town.

I take it more out of schedule convenience (not saying much with 2 and 1/2 departures to/from Cleveland to Chicago). Decent but definitely NOT something I would hold up as a model for transportation - or use when a decent option exists (a train).

Only had one truly bad experience when the bus never showed up - and the customer service center was closed. Luckily I was able to get on the next bus that morning but it really screwed my plans for that day. But then again, I only paid $5. (plus fifty cents)

Megabus is offering 200,000 free tickets with the code "TRYMEGABUS". There is a limit to how many seats are available on each bus in addition to the 200,000 limit. Not sure how many are left, but if you aren't completely turned away by the service, try it out. Me and a friend got 6 round trip tickets Cincinnati-Chicago for a total of $0.50

Seems like Lakefront Lines is also offering 2 extra Cincinnati-Columbus trips as well.  Glad to see that one back after megabus yanked the Cincy-Pittsburgh route.  That's one I would have used a ton in college, may even use it over the Christmas holiday to meet my Columbus friends. :)

Now if only they could do a 3C route.

You can't actually select Cincinnati to Cleveland or Cleveland to Cincinnati. I believe the Cincinnati route goes nonstop to Buffalo. You cannot get to Buffalo from Cleveland on Megabus' website.

Though if you look at the schedule on Megabus' site it shows it stopping in Cleveland when you do a Cincinnati->Buffalo trip.  Might be something to email Megabus about.

Then wouldn't show enroute time on the schedule. When an enroute time is shown, that means there's a stop. It doesn't let you book it on the Megabus site, but you should be able to book it through Lakefront as it was possible before the partnership with Megabus.

I don't see anywhere on Lakefront's website that allows you to purchase tickets... If you have a link that would be awesome. Thanks!

I'm not sure if the Lakefront-Megabus thing is lasting too much longer, lots of trips I can't reserve after about mid Feb.

On the flip side, after Jan 9th they are going to be offering direct service to UC right off short vine (at Jefferson and University/the circle at Sigma Sigma Commons), should be good esp for those students taking late night trips after metro service has stopped:

http://us.megabus.com/BusStops.aspx (pull down the Cincy stop and another city and you'll see).

^I think the Lakefront/Megabus partnership is continuing. When I was looking at trips in mid-December, the latest I could book was January 10 or so. I think those lines just aren't available to purchase at the same time as the other routes. I keep checking back and more dates get added. It's just slower.

^-I hope that's the case.  Having an option to easily flip up to Columbus when I'm in Cincy to visit my friends there is always a nice thing :-)

Oddly they aren't stopping those buses at UC and OSU.  Having a midday bus between the two kind of makes sense...

Megabus, the Recovery of American Downtowns, and the Resurgence of the Bus Industry

Posted Jan. 7, 2013, at 3:58 p.m. By Whet Moser

I used to take buses a lot: Vegas to Chicago and back, Chicago to Virginia, a long couple-weeks loop from Virginia to Chicago to several northeastern cities, Chicago to Atlanta. But I haven't been on a bus in a few years, because of my uniquely bad luck with fellow passengers. There was the time a guy cooking up in the stall next to me at the Chicago Greyhound station got dragged out under the door by a couple cops; the guy who got kicked off the bus for threatening to cut someone's heart out; the time I got woken up when the bus almost went into a spin; the time I got woken up by someone's hand covering my face; the guy with the white-supremacist tattoo at 4a.m. in rural Kentucky. Bus travel got a bit wearying after awhile, and I haven't been on one since 2007 or so.

Turns out I'm missing a trend (PDF, via):

Crap. I'm not happy about the stop moving to the transit center. A 20-something minute walk to the rapid, especially with luggage, is going to be a pain, especially after a 7-hour overnighter. Waiting outside wasn't all that pleasant in the cold, but being a hop and skip away from Tower City was a HUGE plus.

Why would you walk when several buses and the HL (a block away) to take you downtown??  Also, not everyone is going west, there are travelers going East or SouthEast.

Also a number of westside bus lines pass through Downtown to terminate at STJ.

Hmm, I just bought Megabus tickets for August. It says I arrive at the Stephanie Tubbs Center, but depart on West 3rd. Is that just an error or am I calling customer service for clarification.

EDIT: Never mind, they just screwed up the departure tickets. It's all at the transit center.

Megabus now operates out of RTA transit center near CSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Megabus, the inexpensive bus services that recently expanded its service from Cleveland to eight new cities, now has a new address: the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center.

Effective today, the bus line which offers trips to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit and other locations with fares as low as $1, will pick up and drop off passengers at the modern facility at 2115 East 22nd St. From there, people can catch RTA buses, trains and trolleys anywhere in the city, including a free trolley ride to Public Square.

"This is much better than the old location," said Tammy Irwin of Warren, who was dropping off her daughter, Liz Schulte, 27, to return home to Chicago. "This seems like a much safer location."

Thisis also a sign, that our LEISURE travel market is improving.  I wont step foot on one of those buses, but hopefully young people use these services to visit Cleveland.

I've ridden them to Chicago twice and saw lots of young people riding. On my first trip, I was the second-oldest person on board. Most were college-aged. Both times, the 81-seat double-decker bus was sold out.

I've also seen a friend from Chicago board Megabus here. He used the bus to Detroit and Ann Arbor the last time and took Amtrak from there. There was a healthy crowd getting on, with a mix of young (student-aged) and middle- to older-age folks, black, white, Middle-Eastern, Latino, Asian, etc.

Ironically, the Cincinnati-Buffalo bus has been a long-running daytime operation by Lakefront which served the Greyhound station here at Cleveland. Its affiliation switched to Megabus and became an overnight service and bypassed Cleveland. This has morphed again into the current operation. We'll see if this sticks or if it is expanded, morphs to something else or discontinued.

^Bypassing Cleveland should be illegal!

With the route expansion of megabus, they are moving from the very convenient and rail-served location on W 3 and Superior to somewhere around 22nd and Prospect to make use of the RTA shelters at the anti-urban bus center facility there.

Anit urban?  It's a bus shelter?

According to Google Maps, 9 RTA routes stop at the STJ transit center and 1 stops on the west side of W3rd between Frankfort and Superior. :-P

Obviously if one is willing to cross the street or walk a couple blocks there are far more routes on Public Square but also more routes on Euclid. Still I still have to ask in what world is a surface lot with surface lots and parking garages on 3 of 4 sides more urban than a bus shelter between an arena and a YMCA and across the street from a growing university?
