Hi everyone,,, I going to move to Ohio pretty soon and im woundring where u guyz recomand i move to??

Im looking for a safe college town...cheap rent... fun to live in..

These are my choeses :

ASHLAND

BOWLING GREEN

COLUMBUS

GRANVILLE

KENT

OXFORD

OBERLIN

ADA

ATHENS

FINDLAY

YOUNGSTOWN

THANK U

Well, I think most will tell you it depends on what you are looking for.  I think that Columbus definitely--and Youngstown, as well--are different than the rest of those towns on the list.  Columbus has 700k people in the city and another 1 million plus in the suburbs, so it's not a prototypical college town.

Are you moving for a job, or looking to go to school in one of these places, or just moving to the city first and everything else will follow?

Stay away from Ada!

^ I would also wonder about Findlay and Ashland being "fun".  It would all depend on one's definition.  Is fun going to a dragstrip, going 4 wheeling, or fishing?  Then you might enjoy both of those places.  Being that this site is called Urban Ohio I'm guessing you're probably interested in a little more of an urban flair.

Why is Akron, Dayton, or Toledo left off your list of practically random places in Ohio?

don't do it

If your idea of fun is getting drunk I would recommend Kent or OU. They are true college towns, the only difference is that OU has a more frat feel to it while Kent is more laid back. I don't miss those days anymore. I would pick Columbus but you said college town.

Columbus.  There, done.

Many of these are about as college towny as you can get.  Whereas places like Columbus and Youngstown are much more than that.  Of those listed I would go with Columbus as you will be able to find the most to do there.

I wonder which one Cdawg will recommend? :P

Yea im movin for college

nd i have to pick one of those..schoolership stuff...

What i ment was:

A CITY U CAN WALK IN 5 AM aND FEEL SAFE...

prob not big town = less bums haha..

thank u for u who answered...ill defenitly check'em out

^If you really want that college town with lots to do and safe then you need to check out Oxford (Miami University) and Athens (Ohio University).

Hmmm...Ada might be right for you then.

Oxford, Oberlin, and Granville might be good options.  They are all very much college towns, but all are fairly close to Ohio's major cities (Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus).

haha Iam international ...i have to finish studying English first...no worries  :-D

I'd be less concerned about safety and more concerned about which town has the best library and which college has the best English dept.

Edit: Sorry, I apologize. I didn't know you were an international student.

Athens is known for being the most fun as it has a lot of parties but if you're serious about academics I would go with Kent or Oxford. I hate the city of Bowling Green and the students are known for high STD rates. Miami is one of the best schools in the State if you're considering Oxford. Larger universities like Ohio State are more diverse; you might like that better since you would have the opportunity to join a club with people of the same background.

Nawaf - If you can think of anything else you are looking for in a school (diversity, size of city it is in or how close it is to a large city, academic quality, architecture, personality of students, etc) it would be easier to help you. What are you majoring in?

C-Dawg - I didn't mean to trash OU, I know they have some world renowned programs but think of it this way - he's an international student so the experience is going to be overwhelming enough for him; all of the partying might add to that distraction. You can party hard at any university in Ohio if you seek it but OU is more likely to force it on you.

Also, I agree that Oxford is snooty as $%@ and it's funny to me because theres a few kids I know that go there who act like that but do not come from elite family background. One time I was at a driving range with my friend and some friends he brought with him from OSU who just visited Miami for the first time. I was wearing a Northface jacket and they said "dude we just got back from Oxford, you would fit right in at Miami". Biggest insult I ever heard.  :x

I would not recommend Ashland.  There's a difference between "safe" and "sleepy."

I recommend Kent, but I'm biased because that's where I went to school.

I wouldn't suggest Ashland either,it's a really boring town. Also Ashland is a dry campus and the school enforces this rule very strictly.

When I was in college I went to classes in Akron, but parties at Kent.

Substitute "Toledo" and "BG" and that's pretty much my college years...

Columbus. You have the college scene + multiple urban hoods with their own vibes. If variety is one of your top concerns, that is.

nawaf welcome.

all the schools are safe. some have more a fun campus and city/town than others, depends if you want big or small.

also, there are some differences between private college schools and public state universities too.

it's hard to recommend anything to you as your choices are so widely random. you have to give us more.

are you studying classical music? oberlin.

are you into studying popular culture? bowling green.

etc., etc. --- so we are going to need more information from you to be more helpful.

Part of being an international student is learning the American culture, the American industry, and American business.  I don't think Athens would necessarilly be the right choice for this student (Sorry C-Dawg).  Athens is basically an island stuck in the middle of southeast Ohio that has very little in the way of internship options with large companies that could help this student develop their American business and cultural skills.  I think you would be best suited in  Columbus or Youngstown where you could actually experience America, and not just some small college town that is known for parties.

I'd agree with Columbus being the best for an international student.  There's just more there besides the college, though the scale of OSU means that Columbus still comes off as a college town in alot of ways.  It think it offers the best of both worlds- a college oriented "scene", but in a larger metropolitan context.
