Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Roger Mezger

Plain Dealer Reporter

The company would not say Tuesday exactly how many positions were cut.

However, up to 60 workers at the home medical equipment manufacturer's Elyria headquarters appear to have lost their jobs Aug. 2...

Invacare slashing 225 jobs in Elyria

Latest job cuts worry Elyria leaders

Cindy Leise

The Chronicle-Telegram

ELYRIA Local officials lamented the loss of more jobs and more revenue in the wake of Invacare Corp.s announcement Monday that it was shipping 225 jobs out of the city.

Mayor Bill Grace blamed trade policies, saying they are forcing companies to move jobs overseas to stay competitive.

There needs to be more safeguards to make trade closer to equal, Grace said. We need to put higher demands on those we trade with in work regulations, environmental controls, wages and requiring that they purchase similar amounts from the United States...

Work to be done in China, Mexico

The Chronicle-Telegram

ELYRIA Invacare Corp. will eliminate 225 of the 750 jobs at its Taylor Street manufacturing plant and shift part of its operations to plants in China and Mexico, company officials told employees Monday.

The cuts come amid growing difficulty competing with low-cost imports and continuing cuts in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, Matt Mullarkey, Invacare vice president of global operations, told the workers during meetings at Lorain County Community College.

Invacare has about 6,200 workers worldwide, with about 1,500 in Lorain County...

On the Record with A. Malachi Mixon III

A fight for survival

Invacare's Mixon discusses competitive pressures, regulatory issues

Sunday, July 16, 2006

After two decades of growth, Invacare Corp. is being pinched.

Government reimbursement pressures and low-cost Asian competition are forcing the Elyria-based maker of wheelchairs and other home health-care products to look for cheaper ways of doing business. Invacare's answer is to cut jobs in Northeast Ohio and move some manufacturing and design work to China.

And it is stepping up its lobbying of the federal government over what the company considers increasingly restrictive reimbursements for products such as power wheelchairs and portable oxygen units. Many senior citizens rely on government-backed Medicare to pick up most of those costs.

It's an unfamiliar position for "Mr. Invacare," as A. Malachi Mixon III is known. Nearly everything he's touched in the last couple decades has blossomed...

Invacare plans to close more plants

No more job cuts expected in Ohio, CEO says

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Mary Vanac

Plain Dealer Reporter

Invacare Corp., the home health care equipment maker in Elyria, plans another wave of plant closures and related job cuts worldwide as it looks for new bank lenders in the next few weeks.

Company executives weren't ready to put numbers on the closures or job cuts announced Wednesday, which are expected to save the company $38 million this year and $50 million a year after that.

But A. Malachi Mixon III, Invacare's chief executive, said Wednesday evening that he didn't expect any more job cuts in Ohio this year...
