Government reimbursement pressures and low-cost Asian competition are forcing the Elyria-based maker of wheelchairs and other home health-care products to look for cheaper ways of doing business. Invacare's answer is to cut jobs in Northeast Ohio and move some manufacturing and design work to China. And it is stepping up its lobbying of the federal government over what the company considers increasingly restrictive reimbursements for products such as power wheelchairs and portable oxygen units. Many senior citizens rely on government-backed Medicare to pick up most of those costs. It's an unfamiliar position for "Mr. Invacare," as A. Malachi Mixon III is known.
