Mecklenburg  a very nice state in the north of Germany between Hamburg and Berlin.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern there are many nice castles.

The capital  city is Schwerin and surrounded by many nice lakes,

on an island in the lake of Schwerin there is a nice castle

“Castle of Schwerin”

you could say : Castle of sleeping beauty ..

Scarcely a visitor to Schwerin will be able to resist the attraction of the palace with its multiplicity of towers and turrets and its many faceted facades. With the unique harmonious interplay with the surrounding parks and gardens and the natural landscape and its artistic and architectural riches the palace presents itself as the largest and most important and also the most modern palace site in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The palace is architecturally one of the most important buildings of European historicism. It was built from 1845 - 57 in the neo-renaissance style under the direction of G. .A. Demmler and F .A. Stüler as a new residence for the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

Get your tickets ASAP!  I was supposed to be in Portugal right now, but the price of the tickets QUADRUPLED in the four months I was planning the trip last winter.

No, sorry.  But best of luck.  Actually, I'm hoping to go to Germany in 2010 too...my sister gets out of Iraq in 14 month (theoretically) and she's going straight to Bamberg.  I was hoping to visit her there, but we'll see.

what? no comments from our JMecklenburg on here yet?

Have any suggestions??? I'd really prefer not to pay a arm and a leg for a ticket! Thanks!

Off season travel!  The same flights CLE-FRA that cost $543 in Nov 08 or March 09 are priced at $1088 in June 09.

Germany is awesome. Sell your soul if you must.

That is one nice picture.

.. three ..

I love how the cafe seating (seen in the 1st picture) is so open to the rest of the public space.  In the States we tend to barricade our seating off for various reasons.  I find this to be more pleasing though.

.. in the US  I miss the architects for town/city plan ..  and in Cincinnati it is very very awfull .. in Germany there a lot Architect`s  only for cityplans ..  that`s the reason , why City`s  in  Germany mutch more nicer ...

^Well that and the fact that European cities were largely built before the introduction of the automobile.  City's are much nicer in the terms we're talking about when they are built around pedestrian traffic as the primary mode of transportation.

Stupid drinking laws.

I wonder if Germany permits drinking in public places.

^ Yes. The funny part is, you're much more likely to see public drunkenness in the U.S.

Stupid drinking laws.

.. in the USA .. for young people .. yes ..

.. I don`t understand this .. you can drive a car with 16 ... you can vote with 18 .. but alcohol is forbidden ..  please why ? .. so kids drinking alcohol in the basement or other places ..

I wonder if Germany permits drinking in public places.

.. please .. why not ..

.. but driving under Allollolol ..lol .. is also not allowed ..

The brain stops developing around the age of 23-25. It probably is a good idea, but it was a law I hated before I turned 21. Young people are more likely to drink and drive and the U.S. doesn't have good public transit to support drunkenness in public or at bars. 42 thousand people per year die in auto accidents in the U.S., many are caused by drunk drivers.

.. it`s time to go to Germany

The design of that palace is more French Rennaissance, like Chambord and some of the Loire chateaux, which is funny since it is in Germany.

The rulers of Mecklenburg, interestingly, were not Germans.  They were slavs, one of the slavic tribes in what is now East Germany.  They and their tribe converted to Christinaity and eventually became Germanized.  Only one of those east German slavic groups retained their slavic ethnolinguistic identity (the Lustatians).

Anyway, a little historic tidbit there.  And yes, sidewalk cafe culture (which can be beer or wine as well as coffee) is whats nice about continental Europe.  Maybe the climate there works more as it's not so hot and humid in the summer (dont know about the Mediterreanean lands).

It can't compare to the effect it would have had during the Renaissance when buildings of authority stood in stark contrast to the complete filth and despair that was the city. They were buildings made with incredible precision and detail. I think it wasn't until the Victorian era when they could make all sorts of buildings with that kind of precision when replicating various elements economically viable.
