Posted September 29, 200816 yr Hey, guys. I've been thinking for a while now that I'd like to move back to my hometown of Cleveland. This is not, by any means, a definite thing, but I was looking through craigslist today and found this ad for an apartment in Midtown (the Dixson Hall apartments @ 3814 Prospect Ave & E 36th): http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/859450202.html http://www.dixsonhall.com Can anyone tell me what this area is like? Is it a pretty quiet area? What is crime like here? Also, how far is it from basic amenities like grocery/food stores, etc? I won't be using a car, so I'll only be depending on mass transit; it looks like a Euclid Corridor station will be a block away, which is fantastic. Anyway, if anyone can help here, it would be much appreciated.
September 29, 200816 yr I thought you already did live in Cleveland? I don't know about the crime rate in that area. Prospect, as well as the whole stretch of streets from Chester to Carnegie is mostly a business corridor, though you are only two blocks away from the northern edge of the city's largest concentration of public housing. I for one feel safe along Prospect during the day while walking or biking, but I don't know if I would at night. For basics, soon (probably by the time you could make it back) you can hop on the Health Line and be at the Aldi's at East 79th and Euclid, Reserve Square Market, or the CVS Downtown in only a couple of minutes. There are also a couple of "grocery's" along Prospect and Euclid in that stretch, though I think they focus on take out beer sales. There is also a Dave's at East 34th and Payne, maybe a little less than a mile walk from there. Also, Galluci's, the best Italian grocer in Cleveland, is right along the EC at Euclid and 60th.
September 29, 200816 yr Nah, I live in NYC at the moment. Been here for the past 8 years, in fact. But I'm feeling like I've kinda reached my limit of this city, and I'm seriously considering moving back. I'm still in school, but I'm even considering dropping out to move back. We shall see. I was just wondering about this area because the apartment looks nice, it's in close proximity to downtown/mass transit .. but on Google Maps it looks a bit seedy-ish.
September 29, 200816 yr Do NOT drop out unless you absolutely have to, or unless you have a lock on finishing your degree at somewhere equivalent (i.e. CIA). Absolutely do NOT even consider dropping out unless your sanity completely 100% depends upon it. I think X has a good synopsis of the area - it's probably quiet but with the Healthline station that close, you wouldn't feel *too* isolated. There are a few newer townhomes (the Montana) over that way, so it's not completely desolate. Safety-wise, I think the concern would be a lack of "eyes on the street" at certain hours more than high-crime. If you can handle the Bronx, I'm sure you'd be fine here - but with less population density, you'd still want to have your wits about you. That said, don't forget CityWheels if you need infrequent access to a car - I'm not sure how soon their downtown fleet is coming online. However, they do have two cars at Euclid and Mayfield so all you'd have to do is hop on the Healthline, pick up the car and do your errands. Yes....be sure to investigate ON BOTH ENDS about transfers. I know someone in that area. The apartment and brownstones are HUGE and gorgeous, but after 8/9 PM it's dead. Yet its a quick bus, cab, bikeride into downtown or over to AsianVillage/ChinaTown
September 29, 200816 yr Not banning me, exactly .. just .. needing a change. :) Thanks for the tips. I know you guys get a lot of these types of questions, but it's really helpful.
September 30, 200816 yr I left college early but quickly decided I'd made a mistake so my credits still were transferable. Get your degree if you want a decent job (especially in Northeast Ohio and these economic times -- your options will greatly increase with a degree). The only exception, like others said, is if your sanity is at stake. How close are you to an associates degree? I think you can find some substantial apartment buildings like that one in many other more vibrant neighborhoods. You can always rent a place at Dixon Hall and keep looking. Remember the tips that have been given here to others who are looking.... Get temporary housing, find a neighborhood you love, then find your home. I loved the Gold Coast area but wanted to buy a condo, not rent. It took me three years to find the place I wanted in the condition I could live with and at the price I could afford. September 30, 200816 yr I lived in that area last year. It's not ready yet. There are cool people living in some of those buildings for sure. But it's short on amenities and crime was an issue. A little north of there, Asiatown, has a lot more going on.
September 30, 200816 yr I dropped out of college a decade ago and I wasn't smart enough to go back quickly. After a decade out of school its VERY hard to go back. My life and responsibilities are so different now.
