Will a Frontier League team survive? Avon to get a Frontier League team soon. This will make 4 teams in addition to the Indians in the metro area. Tribe, Akron, Lake County, Mahoning Valley and now Avon. Are there enough fans in the area to have such a low level Independent team in the area. The Canton Crocodiles were in this league and failed miserably and moved to Washington PA. Personally I think this team should have gone to Lorain.http://www.chroniclet.com/2008/09/23/avon%e2%80%99s-future-baseball-team-has-its-manager_122/

it was supposed to go to lorain for awhile, but avon built a nice stadium too and well, that's where the money is so....

i love this level of baseball, i will definately check it out sometime. i hope it does well. i think it might do ok, but we'll see.

^^The Cleveland Artichokes???

Location Name:

[] Lake Erie

[] Cleveland

[] Avon

[] Ohio

[] Lorain County

Team Name:

[] Groove -- The name Ohio Groove reflects Cleveland’s history of rock and roll. It is a fun, upbeat name to match the exciting, positive attitude and atmosphere fans will enjoy when they attend a game. It also is representative of the Glacial Grooves at Kelley's Island on Lake Erie.

[] Crushers -- This tough and macho baseball name pays homage to Lorain County’s vineyards and the crushing of grapes to make wine.

[] Red Tails -- The Red Tail hawk is seen everywhere in Lorain County. This beautiful and dominating bird of prey is consistently seen along I-90 right next to the stadium.

[] Artichokes -- Avon and the Sheffield/ N. Ridgeville area is known for its great soil, perfectly suited for growing vegetables. An artichoke is a beautiful vegetable and would be great for merchandise and other promotions. Also, artichokes have purple flowers so the team colors could be green and purple. An artichoke would make a fun mascot and fans could cheer “Go chokes!”

[] Ironmen -- This would be a fitting tribute to the industrial history of this part of Lorain County. While dynamics of steelmaking in the marketplace have changed, it still plays a part of our region's economic vitality.

[] Walleyes -- This freshwater fish, native to the area, gets its name from the fact that their eyes, like those of cats, reflect light.

[] Woollies -- The Woollybear is the local caterpillar celebrated with much fanfare at the Woollybear Festival in Lorain County. In much the same way Punxsutawney Phil is celebrated in the century-old tradition of Groundhog Day in which he predicts the end of winter, the Woollybear Caterpillar is similarly celebrated for its mythical association to winter forecasting.

good find. are all pretty good.

i'd really love it if they went with the "wollybears," that would be cool. the mascot would either be downright super-cute or it could be godzilla movie scary if they made it wrong. or it could wear a dick goddard mask. ha. it's stealing something from vermilion, but that's ok, close enough and certainly the wollybears are everywhere. do they even still have the wollybear festival in vermilion anymore? it was a cute little local fest.

if they went with the "walleyes" that would be a good one, too. and the others are fine, even the " 'chokes." that one could be funny and even classy if they market it right.

hasn't the "crushers" already been used before for a cle sports team? i thought it had been. no repeats allowed!

Artichokes? Heh Heh.

Reminds me of a Littles Rascals episode where Stymie says, referring to Artichokes, "Well, it can sure choke Artie, but it ain't gonna choke me."

 ha! i remember that episode.  if they pick artichokes...i think that could be a gift shoppe tee shirt!

Location Name:

[] Lake Erie- Only if they're going to build a floating stadium

[] Cleveland- Maybe, where did those Avonites come from, anyway?

[] Avon- Where?  Who cares?

[] Ohio- OK, but which of the "Five Ohio's" is it?

[X] Lorain County- Where again?  Oh well, it's as good a choice as we're likely to get.

Team Name:

[] Groove -- Sounds like an AFL team

[] Crushers -- Sounds like a Rollergames team

[] Red Tails -- The analogy to a whooped -ss is just too obvious.

[] Artichokes -- No.  Just no.

[] Ironmen -- Can they get Robert Downey, Jr. to throw out the first pitch?  No?  Then no.

[X] Walleyes -- I like this the best, because it doesn't suck as much as the others.

[] Woollies -- I think we should reserve this name for the inevitable Vermillion Frontier League team.

geez, so serious. what a wet blanket.

Darn, and I thought I was being snarky.

uh, ok.

Lorain Ohio to have a team in new Prospect League.

The Paints - and, yes, the team's name will still be the same - will compete in the East Division of the new league, along with Richmond, Ind. (a longtime Frontier League rival of the Paints), Lorain, Ohio, as well as Butler and Slippery Rock, Pa. Slippery Rock is another former FL franchise, having supported the Sliders one year.

LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS

INTRODUCING THE….

“GO CRUSHERS!”

The fans have voted and the name for the new Frontier League team scheduled to play ball in Lorain County this spring is the Lake Erie Crushers. The new name and identity was announced Thursday, December 4th at 1:00 p.m. at Avon City Hall to an audience of season ticket holders, sponsors, potential sponsors and fans.

The team name was determined by a “Name the Team Contest” sponsored by The Morning Journal. The contest launched on October 7 with fans submitting ideas for the team name on AvonProBaseball.com. Of the more than 800 entries received, the team narrowed the choices down to seven for fans to vote on their favorite. Voting concluded the first week of November with more than 1,500 fans weighing in to determine what name would appear on the front of the team’s jerseys next season.

“Our goal was to select a name the team and the communities in our region could be proud of, a name that resonates with fans and reflects the best characteristics of our area,” said team owner, Steven Edelson, “The new ballpark will draw fans from Lakewood, Rocky River, all of Western Cuyahoga County, as far west as Sandusky, Lorain County and all the cities in between. It was vitally important to us that each of these areas play an active role in the process.”

The winner of the “Name the Team Contest” was Thomas Long of Avon, Ohio. He won a fantastic prize pack of team t-shirts, hats, tickets to Opening Day on June 2, four 12-game mini season ticket packages and a one year subscription to The Morning Journal. The other finalist also won t-shirts and hats.

To assist with the process, the team hired Plan B Branding, a creative ideas company to build the name into a full brand platform and identity complete with logos, uniforms and mascots. The uniforms and mascots will be revealed at a later date and the team’s new website will unveiled within the next week. Limited merchandise is available now for the holidays.

“To us Crushers demonstrates toughness, hard work and resilience. This is an apt description of the character of our region,” said Edelson, “Our goal will be to live up to this description both on and off the field.”

The Morning Journal is the official media partner of the Avon Professional Baseball “Name the Team Contest.” The Morning Journal is a daily newspaper covering local, regional, and national news including local sports, video and multimedia coverage, and classified advertising.

The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team will open its Inaugural Season on June 2, 2009 in a new 5,000+ capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611. Season tickets are on sale now! For more information on tickets, promotions and team news, visit the team website at www.LakeErieCrushers.com or call 440-934-3636.
