How did that happen?

Ha ha, no, I kid.  I'm more elitist than that.  I moved to Cambridge.  Apologies to all, especially ColDayMan.

For real, though.  I finished my master's degree in cartography (and yes, I know that's totally bogus) last December and have fallen in with several colleagues in a little for-hire cartography company.  (I will refrain from using this post for advertising, but, you know, hit me up if you want to hire somebody for maps.)  I work from home and--skipping interim details--have ended up here.

It's been three weeks and I still haven't gotten any photos, but instead I'll share just a few from April when I was here for the Association of American Geographers conference.  First is a small set from my friend's office about halfway up the John Hancock Tower:

Oh, here are a few more from summer 2007 that I don't think I posted here.  Forgive me if I did; it's hard to remember.

They're from the North End and Charlestown.

Awesome photos!

I've never seen boston before, I almost feel like I can say I have now.  Very nice row houses and I love the block after block of homes, no parking lots!  I started reading "The Life and Death of Great American Cities" a little while ago (I need to pick back up on it been busy), she mentions South Bend a lot and its nice to see what the heck she is talking about now.

Hehe, South Bend.  Boston is a lot like South Bend, drunk Catholics, Irish twits, and, well, more drunk Catholics.

Great shots of a "nice" city.

Boston seems to be one of the least photographed cities on internet forums.  I wonder why that is.  Your photos are gorgeous and Boston is an amazing place...can't wait to visit.

Probably because its one racist town!  Yeah I said it!

^ I will be interested to learn about this whole racist reputation as I spend time here.  Much of it seems to be attributed to events in the reasonably distant past (distant enough for times to have changed, I mean), so I wonder in what ways racism remains stronger here than elsewhere.  I would discount the obvious images: "lots of white people" is not racism (though perhaps a result of it), and segregated neighborhoods are common throughout the country.  This is not to deny it, as I have no facts or experience on hand.  Just thinking aloud about something to investigate.

Meanwhile, I'll be that white guy with an undeserved sense of pride and accomplishment for living in a "diverse" (by metro Boston standards) neighborhood.  Hey, we should have a smiley for that.

I only speak from personal experience.  Thats my take on Boston!

Great pics! I always have mixed feelings on Boston.  As far as being steeped in history and great architecture, yes- it is great. There is a lot of higher ed there which makes for a nice atmosphere near universities. Otherwise it can be out and out anti- intellectual redneck, new england style-which is what I think MTC is referring too. It is as if like 2 different societies exist, each thumbing the nose at the other.

I like the easy access to the east coast seaboard (NYC, coast of Maine). I have been a few times over the last few years and find the public transportation easy and among the best I have taken. Cambridge has some fun spots, but I have to say I like Brookline the best so far in that area. The worst: the crappy weather like here, coupled by high cost of living and a lot of rotten citizenry

:-D

Dropkick Murphys - I'm Shipping Up To Boston Lyrics

I'm a sailor peg

And I lost my leg

I climbed up the topsails

I lost my leg

I'm shipping up to boston

(whoa oh oh)

x3

I'm shipping off

To find my wooden leg

I'm a sailor peg

And I lost my leg

I climbed up the topsails

I lost my leg

I'm shipping up to boston

(whoa oh oh)

x3

I'm shipping off

To fing my wooden leg

^Worst lyrics ever imo.

The Departed was great though. Perfect cast.

I thought there was poverty in Boston on the south and west side? People say it's the east coast San Francisco. Are they just going to one part of the city? Guru from Gang Starr, Benzino and Marky Mark are from Boston.

ever? you sure? lol!

Nevermind, I forgot about the 90s.

Ditto.

Never been to Boston, but racism causes a city to be under-represented via photography???

I've always wished that I had a Boston accent.

Hey its my theory that the city doesn't have broad appeal and is unwelcoming so there are less folks taking pics.  This theory doesn't hold water, but hey.

Moving on...back to the pics...not to racists comments.  We have a thread for that.  How's that?

Fair enough.

I take pictures whether I'm welcomed or not. I don't give a D#MN. They can take that up with me or the police.

Some great photos!

I have always loved Boston as a city from an "infrastructure" and cultural point of view.  Also like the surrounding countryside and region.  It would be my number one place to live if I were planning on moving (which I am not) except for one thing...without a doubt the most unfriendliest people in the United States (that and the whiniest sports fans).

Preach it!

I went to college in New England, and while I love the history and the beautiful, old architecture, I will never voluntarily live there again.  The atmosphere just wore on me.  I distinctly remember being back in Cleveland on a vacation, and being surprised when a store clerk greeted me when I walked in.  It was at that moment that I realized I needed to move back west.
