Posted October 4, 200816 yr I had to visit the Hillbilly Capital Atlanta last week , here are a few pics around downtown. This was a horrendous traffic at 7:30 AM. I had an 8:30 AM meeting it took 50 minutes to get downtown. Views from the 68 Floor of the Westin Centennial Park
October 4, 200816 yr He he he. Also to note, there was nobody and I mean nobody on the streets during the day. I walked from my office to the hotel and I passed about 15 homeless people and maybe 5 people walking. At 5 PM the sidewalks roll up.

October 4, 200816 yr ^Oh...come on. That's not true. During the day you'll naturally see less activity in Midtown since it is more residential, but the weekends and evenings are vibrant throughout much of Midtown.

October 5, 200816 yr I'm always amazed how Atlanta's chaotic street layout doesn't add up to anything. There is that one nice flatiron building but that's it.

October 5, 200816 yr The metro area is roughly the same as Boston and D.C. What a shame. Imagine if they built downtown as dense as Cincinnati and preserved historic smaller scale buildings. It really would be a great city.

It really would be a great city. Again, they use an area that damn near reaches the Tenn/GA border. It's a hicktown! With tons and tons of homeless people, foreclosures and soon to be unemployed! America's most over rated city! Yawn.

Any idea what is going on with that? I wondered the same thing. What I was told is that the manufacturer that made those unique windows for the Peachtree Westin Tower is no longer in business and they had to go through another manufacturer. Needless to say that whole situation threw a wrench in the works.
October 5, 200816 yr I drove though early sept on my way to florida and noticed the missing windows. I heard it will cost more to replace the windows than it cost to build the whole building.

There is a glass dome that covers the base of the hotel and all the windows are cracked, and covered with a material so that they wont break and fall into the lobby. The elevator that goes to the top sundial restaurant is out of order. It was kind of weird.

Can't their insurance company pay to get have a mold re-made? I think the windows for this building were one-of-a-kind. The building from the 9th floor up is all floor to ceiling windows. There are no exterior walls. There are several building that are still damaged. Very similar to what happened in Miami a few years back.

October 6, 200816 yr They can't blame General Sherman on a CHEAP skyline. Compare the buildings of DT Atlanta to those in Chicago! Half of the buildings in Downtown Atlanta look like they were transplanted from North Korea.

October 15, 200816 yr How did Atlanta happen? Lack of proper planning. I was there this summer for a month, and possible job relocation. Wretched horrible gross place. There are a few redeeming qualities. I try to find them is all people and places :). But not enough to get me to stay.

October 15, 200816 yr The ATL is an incredible city. Sure, it doesn't have the old-time flavor of a Chicago or a Boston, but the people are fantastic. I guess i'm just partial to it because I spent my twenties there and met my wife and made some cool friends. You can say it's bland and soulless, but if you aren't from there you can find thousands of others just like you. It's like the anti-Cincinnati, no one knows what high school you went to nor do they care. VA/Highland is a beautiful in-town neighborhood, Buckhead still has some nice places, and the Candler Park L5P area is cool. Love me some ATL!

No. We moved backed to finish up schooling and hopefully will get back to the ATL when done.

I think you bring up a good point that not everyone cares about the architecture and urban design aspect of a city. The affordability ratio alone is enough to convince. To a lot of people, the positive energy makes up for it and lets not forget about a certain group of people who came on UrbanOhio about a year ago defending Atlanta and it's future and frankly, they did verbally whoop some behind around here with mention of mass transit expansion and infill projects.

October 18, 200816 yr and those project probably wont get off the ground. Anyway YAWN! Several of them ARE getting off the ground. Even the Beltline project, the one project that has the most potential to redefine Atlanta, is making progress.

It really would be a great city. It IS a great city, just for other reasons. Even if it did preserve its historic smaller buildings--which I wish it did--it still wouldn't measure up to Boston or DC in the urbanity category as it didn't have half the stock those cities had in their heyday.

Half of the buildings in Downtown Atlanta look like they were transplanted from North Korea. C'mon dude, Atlanta vs. Chicago isn't even a fair fight and you know it. Chicago has its share of hideous towers also; the skyline is just so friggin' dense and expansive that it really doesn't matter. The signature towers in Atlanta's skyline are pretty nice IMO and don't even come close to resembling the "hotel of doom."
