Posted October 6, 200816 yr these are a few pics i took of the remains of the old cunard line piers on the hudson river. it's around w14th street in manhattan. here is a shot of abandoned pier 54 from the river view before it was torn down. it's from 1991: and last is a historic view of the working piers here back in 1910. the ship is the lusitania.
October 6, 200816 yr They'd look great in your living room. Is there anything creepier than an abandoned pier?
October 6, 200816 yr Wow...great stuff. Is that the driving range often seen in that picture about half way down?

October 9, 200816 yr That last shot is pretty cool. It almost reminds me of San Francisco. Too bad those entryways couldn't be saved.
October 9, 200816 yr hayward it might be still there as chelsea piers, but the entrance has been altered. i'm not sure how much of the original arch is under underneath anymore, but it was there in the 80's pre-chelsea piers: Chelsea Piers Designed: 1910 by Warren and Whitmore (also Grand Central Terminal) A $100 million, 1.7-million-square-foot development Claim to fame: it was en route to the Chelsea Piers in 1912 that the Titanic sank *** look what i found. my bad, the first pic is not leftover from pier 54 afer all, its left over from robert moses' 1929-1933 elevated west side highway (aka miller highway): more about the old elevated highway here with great photos. i remember driving on it -- demo, lasted from 1973-1989: http://www.nyc-architecture.com/GON/GON020.htm
October 10, 200816 yr WHO WOULD BE DOWN FOR AN UO NYC TRIP LATER THIS YEAR?! I wonder if we could organize something like that on like a 3 day weekend.
October 10, 200816 yr Uhm, I'm going to be in Philly and NYC next week: 15-19. U of M has fall 'study' break, which means the student population either ups and leaves for Chicago or the East coast for the weekend. Ha..........study.... mrnyc, I've been to Chelsea piers before and I guess there is no way to definitely tell. I think of would have remembered seeing the entrances exposed, but if they were there, definitely well covered up.
October 10, 200816 yr I love NYC so much I would bathe in Hudson River water. OK. You say that now! Jump in the Hudson and you'll wake up one morning to find you've turned into one of the Oblongs!
October 14, 200816 yr WHO WOULD BE DOWN FOR AN UO NYC TRIP LATER THIS YEAR?! I wonder if we could organize something like that on like a 3 day weekend. I've been thinking about doing a mini-trip to NYC once classes let out in early December. Although that may have to be canceled if the Bearcats make it to the Orange Bowl down in Miami. Resources will be allocated there for sure.

October 14, 200816 yr I never knew there was an elevated freeway there. Of course, I've only been to NYC twice.
