Morrissey Release Details Confirmed, Shows Scheduled

Joined by Chrissie Hynde on new single B-side

Years of Refusal, the forthcoming solo LP from onetime Smiths frontman (and world's best babysitter) Morrissey, will be released in the UK on February 16 from Decca/Polydor. Moz will sneak out a single for "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" on February 9, joined by the B-sides "Because of My Poor Education" and "Shame Is the Name". "Shame", as it turns out, finds Moz joined on vocals by none other than Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

PELOTONIA TOUR

Biking champ to lend star power to charity ride

Sunday,  March 22, 2009 - 3:36 AM

By Jeffrey Sheban, The Columbus Dispatch

One month after his much-anticipated Tour de France comeback in July, cycling legend Lance Armstrong will set the pace in the first Columbus-to-Athens charity ride for cancer research. Armstrong, who captured the world's imagination by beating testicular cancer, then winning a record seven consecutive Tours, will ride in the Pelotonia Tour in late August and serve as honorary chairman.  The tour, named for peloton, or the main pack of riders in a cycling race, is a collaboration between NetJets Inc. and Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center, including the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.  Organizers hope to raise $40 million in the event's first five years for cancer research at OSU.  NetJets is donating $12.5 million to sponsor the tour and cover expenses so all proceeds can go to research.

For more information or to register to ride, volunteer or support a rider, visit www.pelotonia.org .

As I was posting this, ESPN is reporting that Lance Armstrong was involved in mass collision in a race in Spain.  It is being reported that he fractured his collarbone.  OUCH!  If this effects his appearance at the Pelotonia Tour in August, I'll post it here.

The word is that Lance Armstrong will be able to do the Pelotonia Tour in August.

Thanks for posting this, I'm sure it will be a great event.  The 100 miles to Tony's Tavern would be fun and a relatively easy 100 ride.  I'm just not too keen on trying to raise $1,500.

Yeah, me neither. But I am going down to see this at the least!!

Moz made it to Columbus.  Here's a review of his concert in the beautiful Palace Theatre in downtown.

Rocker reclusive, but bravado shows

Wednesday,  April 1, 2009 - 11:58 PM

By Kevin Joy, The Columbus Dispatch

Although his trademark pompadour might be thinning and next month he'll turn 50, Morrissey still has fire in his chiseled belly, one which the iconic English rocker (as usual) wasn't hesitant to show his fans.  For a singer who's practically made a career from songs about shyness and apathy, the Pope of Mope seemed downright jovial last night at the Palace Theatre.

we see morrissey often and went to the 3/26 carnegie hall show. sounds like cols was pretty much the same show we saw. here's a billboard review w/ the setlist of that one:

here's a typical lovable/unlovable moz concert quote

When a fan screamed, "Morrissey I love you!" he quickly replied, "I cannot be loved. I'm like a dog from the rescue home. There's no point."

Headliners: Britney Spears

Britney Spears brings her Circus tour to Columbus next Thursday, five months after Short North club High Five reopened under the name Circus.  At first glance, the two institutions would seem to have little in common beyond a recent fascination with the big top, but upon further examination, the parallels run much deeper.

Residents, hundreds more gear up for Pelotonia

By SARA R. JOHNSON, COLUMBUS LOCAL NEWS

Published: Friday, July 17, 2009 - 10:22 AM EDT

Within a two-year span, Tom Lennox's life has really come full circle, the New Albany resident said.  About this time in 2007, Lennox, now 42, was dealing with his doctor's diagnosis that he had colon cancer.  He was receiving chemotherapy and radiation at The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University.

Lennox, who is cancer-free, serves as the executive director of the inaugural cycling tour Pelotonia that will take place Aug. 28-30. All proceeds will benefit the James Cancer Hospital.  With the goal set for 2,250 cyclists, Lennox already knows of one participating cyclist -- Lance Armstrong.

For riders, Pelotonia's cause personal

Cancer survivors, relatives ready to go distance

Friday,  August 28, 2009 - 3:05 AM

By Anna Sudar, The Columbus Dispatch

They are parents, children, siblings and grandparents.  Some are cancer survivors; others want to honor those who have lost the fight.  More than a few want to pedal with Lance Armstrong.  Regardless of the reason, each of the more than 2,200 people expected to ride in the inaugural Pelotonia Tour has a story to tell.  Ten months after NetJets Inc. said it would donate $12.5 million to underwrite the Columbus-to-Athens ride to benefit the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University, Pelotonia will kick off this afternoon with registration and opening ceremonies on the lawn of Chemical Abstracts Service.

Read more at http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/08/28/0_PELOTONIA_PEOPLE.ART_ART_08-28-09_A1_RIET6J6.html?sid=101

By the numbers

• The gender breakdown among the 2,211 registered for the Pelotonia Tour: 1,475 men and 736 women

• Average age of the riders: 41

• The majority -- about 2,007 -- hail from Ohio, but 30 other states are represented, including Florida, Michigan, New York and Texas.

• About 160 of the riders work for event sponsor NetJets, and 335 are employed by Ohio State University Medical Center. (The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital is the beneficiary of tour contributions.)

• The four routes (and number of riders): 25 miles (167); 50 miles (811), 100 miles (695), 180 miles (538)

Is that $12.5 million just for this year, or some kind of annual account?  That seems like an awfully large donation for a one-time event.

This Pelotonia ride is the first year of an initial five year run.  The $12.5 million Netjets donation is to pay for the operating costs for the next five years.

Ohio's 'Tour' speeds away

More than 2,200 cyclists push past aches in rides to raise money to fight cancer

Sunday,  August 30, 2009

By Jeffrey Sheban and Anna Sudar, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio's "Tour de Lance" took its show on the road Saturday, with 2,265 riders following bicycling legend Lance Armstrong out of town and into the Appalachian foothills.  The inaugural Pelotonia Tour ends Sunday when the more than 500 who signed on for the 180-mile ride find their way back to Slate Run Metro Park in Canal Winchester without the seven-time Tour de France winner.  Armstrong left town after his 100-mile ride to Athens.  Other riders are expected back between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday.

Leonard Cohen at Madison Square Garden: The master at 75

by Simon Vozick-Levinson

leonard-cohen_l.jpg

"I don’t know when we’ll be passing through here again,” he told the Madison Square Garden crowd early in last night’s set. “So I want to tell you that it is our intention to give you everything we’ve got tonight.” Leonard Cohen does not make empty promises. Backed by a tight folk-rock-jazz band of mostly gray-haired virtuosos, plus three otherworldly backup singers (including frequent collaborator Sharon Robinson), he played for nearly three hours. Cohen (pictured above at another recent show) hit the major peaks in his catalog along the way: “Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Bird on the Wire,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Chelsea Hotel #2,” “Hallelujah” (earning a standing ovation), “I’m Your Man,” “First We Take Manhattan” (of course!), “Everybody Knows,” “The Future,” “Anthem,” to name just a few utter classics.

PromoWest celebrating 25th anniversary

Friday,  October 30, 2009

By Jim Fischer, ThisWeekNews

The concert industry in Columbus is hopping, with no shortage of places to see local, regional and national acts and numerous local promoters.  But PromoWest Productions is the grandpappy of them all.  The company, founded by Scott Stienecker 25 years ago, owns and operates four venues (five, if you count the indoor and outdoor stages at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion) and books/promotes shows at other venues as well.  It officially started when Stienecker took over the Columbus Agora, renamed it the Newport Music Hall and brought Neil Young to town on Sept. 19, 1984.

One of PromoWest's projects with Belkin was the opening of Polaris Amphitheater in 1994.  The partnership later sold the venue, which later was renamed Germain Amphitheater and is now closed.  "Columbus was a secondary market until Polaris Amphitheater opened," Stienecker said.  Following the sale of the amphitheater, PW operated the Brewery District Pavilion for a few years until opening PromoWest Pavilion in 2001, now Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.  The venue is perhaps best-known, both locally and within the industry, as having an indoor-outdoor stage, allowing for 5,500-capacity outdoor shows seasonally and 2,200-capacity indoor shows year-round.

The company celebrates its 25th anniversary with a Bob Dylan show Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.

The Dave Matthews Band will perform June 22 in Huntington Park, the first major concert for the new Arena District stadium.

The ballpark, which holds about 12,300 (including standing-room entry) for a Columbus Clippers game, will accommodate as many as 18,000 concertgoers - including 10,000 spots on the field, said Huntington media director Joe Santry.
