Thanks for the links. I've seen similar things over the years. The 300k number was a police estimate, which I give more credence to. The other two numbers seem to be from organizers, and could be more prone to exaggeration, no?

I would think with cellphone data, crowd estimates could be pretty accurate these days.  But I don't know who has access to that data, how they get it, and if they've used it to gauge things like Pride or sports championship parades.

The Port-A-John companies always know at outdoor events.

I watched a video of Cleveland's and it was larger and longer than I expected. A noticable lack of actual floats though. Unfortunately there was a religious zealot yelling stuff from a bullhorn in the background the entire time which seemed weird for Cleveland.

I wouldn't be surprised at Columbus numbers since the catchment area of population within a 3 hour drive or so is huge, probably close to Chicago catchment area numbers within a 3 hour drive? Although Chicago would get more people flying in for it.

I’m not sure why Columbus’ numbers seem so out of whack.  They must use a really unique method.  I also find it hard to swallow the numbers put out by Experience Columbus generally.  They claim over 51 million visitors to Columbus in 2022 putting Columbus well ahead of Paris.

So what gives? I'm curious as to Columbus area folks' thoughts on this. I'd seriously guess there were closer to 100,000 or 200,000 people in attendance. (Again, impressive! No need to exaggerate.) The festival area/Goodale Park was a small fraction of even those numbers, in the tens of thousands perhaps. Columbus Pride has a lot to be proud of. I feel like these inflated numbers don't really help them. Do city officials or police give their own estimate of the crowd numbers? It'd be interesting to hear what they say.

I really kinda don't know what to say.  If X states ### and Y states ###, then really it's up to you to decide what you feel is more accurate.  If it's 700,000 or 100,000, dunno, and I guess we'll really never know the true number.  It's like any convention, sports game parade, or even the Census. We can only decide ourselves what the correct information is.

Every CVB exaggerates to make their city known.  Cleveland is famous for stating they have the second largest theater district in the country, when Houston, Chicago, Detroit, and Las Vegas say "hold my beer" on that one.

HighBall Halloween Will be Free to Attend in 2024

Columbus’ most popular Halloween party is going cover-free for the first time in 2024, according to organizers. HighBall Halloween, held on High Street in the Short North every fall since 2008, will not charge a general admission when it returns this year on October 26.

“This event is a testament to the creativity and vibrant spirit of our community,” said Betsy Pandora, executive director of the Short North Alliance. “We are excited to make HighBall Halloween accessible to everyone, fostering an inclusive celebration that bridges runway style with the culture of the Short North Arts District.”

Another new feature in 2024 is the “HighBall Bazaar” — a makers market featuring over 100 vendors. The event will also include costume contests for both kids and adults, live music, art installations and food trucks.

Sunday's Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon is set to bring in the largest crowd since before the pandemic.

With more than 13,500 athletes selling out the event and 1,850 volunteers, the 2024 race is getting closer to 2019 participation levels of roughly 15,000 athletes and 3,000 volunteers.

Race Director Darris Blackford said his team is feeling good about this year's event.

"A couple years of rebuilding after the pandemic. ... We're really hitting our stride again," he said.

HighBall Halloween offers free general admission, adds market in 2024

HighBall Halloween returns Saturday to the Short North with a few new features.

The annual celebration will once again take over High Street for an afternoon and evening of festivities. But this year it will offer free general admission.

Centered at the intersection of High Street and Goodale Boulevard, Saturday’s event runs from 2 p.m. to midnight. It’s the second year that HighBall is back on High after a move to the Arena District in 2021 and 2022.

Betsy Pandora, executive director of the Short North Alliance, said in a press release that the organization is thrilled to have the event on the streets of the Short North Arts District again.

rip brian wilson — ☹️

this was the first concert i ever went to when i was a little kid, although this was the endless summer tour and i guess brian wasn’t touring with them anymore — i did catch brian solo at mccarren park in brooklyn in 2016 (if randomly walking by the park counts) —

Ohio State Fair, Columbus, OH (Two shows at 4:30 and 8:30 PM)

The group’s equipment truck broke down and they were forced to use the Fair’s existing sound system.  Despite pouring rain and sound problems Cynthia Robins of the Columbus Dispatch reported that the crowd of roughly 23,000 “pulled a mini-Woodstock (and) grooved on very, very good vibrations and enjoyed a newer, tighter, cooking group of musicians.”  Robins argued the band was better than they’d been when they last played Columbus in April and gave credit to the addition of drummer Ross Salamone, who played in tandem with Ricky Fataar.  The set list for the second show consisted of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “California”, “Marcella”, “We Got Love”, “Do It Again”, “I Can Hear Music”, “Little Deuce Coupe”, “Long Promised Road”, “Sail On Sailor”, “The Trader”, “Feel Flows”, “All This is That”, “Sloop John B”, “Surfer Girl”, “Heroes and Villains”, “Help Me Rhonda”, “I Get Around”, “Fun, Fun, Fun”, “Good Vibrations”, “California Girls”, “Barbara Ann” and “Surfin’ USA.”

^ They were one hell of a live act during that era!!

RIP Brian. You were one a one of a kind talent.
