New sponsors ride to Pelotonia's side

The Pelotonia bicycle tour for cancer research at Ohio State University now has financial commitments worth more than $8 million, securing the event's future for at least five years.  The funding, announced yesterday at Ohio State, replaces a similar amount that NetJets Inc., Pelotonia's first sponsor, withdrew last year.

From Business First of Columbus:

Huntington, Limited step up to back Pelotonia

Corporate and community officials unveiled backers of this year’s Pelotonia, which last year raised more than $4.5 million for cancer research with the participation of more than 2,000 riders.

The largest backers of Pelotonia, with $2.5 million pledges over five years, will be Columbus-based Huntington Bancshares Inc., Columbus-based Limited Brands Inc.’s charitable arm, and Richard and Peggy Santulli.  Richard Santulli is the former CEO of NetJets Inc., the corporate jet operator based at Port Columbus International Airport that was Pelotonia’s chief backer in its inaugural year but reduced its commitment in the face of financial troubles.

Other one-year cash donations are coming from:

• The American Electric Power Foundation, which has pledged $250,000 for this year’s race.

• The Nationwide Insurance Foundation, also donating $250,000.

• Cardinal Health Inc., donating $100,000 along with medical supplies to stock first aid race stations.

Pelotonia organizers said Columbus-based Chemical Abstracts Service once again is offering up in-kind support and the use of its lawn on Olentangy River Road to launch the race.  Columbus-based homebuilder M/I Homes Inc. is providing funding to Pelotonia’s cycling team.

Rider, are you doing this ride? I'm looking for other people to ride with this year; I have one other that is interested. I plan on doing the full length.

Unfortunately no.  Despite my screen-name, I don't do much bike riding.  I just like reporting on these Central Ohio events.

Congrats on your participation in this worthwhile charity Sherman.  It looks like they are trying to do something good.

huntington is trying to get 1000 employees/relatives/customers to ride this year. also the entire executive staff is riding.

What to do in Columbus on a Fourth of July weekend?  Besides lots of fireworks, of course.

Gay softball tournament visits city for first time

Monday, August 16, 2010

By Jeffrey Sheban

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Columbus is playing host this week to a tournament said to be the largest gay sporting event ever played in Ohio.  The 34th annual Gay Softball World Series will run Tuesday through Saturday on the 31 playing fields at Lou Berliner Park on the South Side.

The event is taking place in Columbus for the first time, with the games free and open to the public.  Previous host cities have included Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.  In addition to the on-field action, some of the 2,500 to 3,000 athletes on 148 teams from 37 cities will attend rallies; parties; and, on Tuesday, a Columbus Clippers baseball game.

Pelotonia's ascent: 4,000 riders, bigger goal

Bike tour aims to raise $8 million to fight cancer

Sunday, August 15, 2010

By Jeffrey Sheban, The Columbus Dispatch

In just its second year, the Pelotonia Tour for cancer research has ditched the training wheels and strapped on booster rockets.  Next weekend, organizers are expecting 4,000 or more bicyclists - up from 2,265 a year ago - to traverse four routes ranging from 23 miles to 180 miles between Columbus and Athens.

"Growth is good," said Tom Lennox, a cancer survivor and executive director of Pelotonia, which raises money for Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center, including the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.  "Everybody is getting on board."

None more aggressively than Columbus' oldest bank.  One in four Pelotonia riders will be wearing Team Huntington jerseys because of a major push by the 144-year-old financial institution to get 1,000 employees and their relatives behind the effort. (The number is well ahead of the 55 participants Huntington fielded last year.)

From Columbus Underground:

Columbus Mega Summer Weekend 2010 - Vol. 15

The Columbus Crew will face FC Dallas at a special 4PM Saturday time to honor the founder of both teams, the late Lamar Hunt.  The Lamar Hunt Legacy Day will feature an unveiling of a statue of Lamar Hunt prior to the game.

Also on Saturday, Urban Scrawl takes over Dodge Park in Franklinton from Noon to 8PM.  The Grandview Art Hop is also on Saturday from 5-9PM.  The Obetz Zucchini Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary at its new location in Obetz Memorial Park all weekend long.

And if you haven't seen the broadway show Wicked at the Ohio Theatre yet, this weekend is your last chance to do it.  It ends its month long run at the beautiful downtown theatre on Sunday.

From Columbus Underground:

Columbus Mega Summer Weekend 2010 - Vol. 16

The Ohio State Buckeyes started their 2010 season last night at the Shoe.  The Columbus Clippers are ending their 2010 regular season on Friday (although they made the International League playoffs, so they'll have a few more games at Huntington Park).  Also downtown is the long running Labor Day weekend tradition of the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on North High Street.  That and the Short North Gallery Hop will make for a crowded intersection at High & Goodale.

Along the riverfront in front of COSI, Waterfire and BalletMet are having a free performance Friday night at Geona Park.  And inside COSI will be the Titanic exhibit which ends on Labor Day.

And finally, the Bike the C-Bus tour will be on Saturday and the Wexner Center will be free on Sunday.

Cyclists tour neighborhood 'melting pot'

Sunday, September 5, 2010

By Mary Beth Lane

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Bicyclists will tell you that there is something special about seeing a city from two wheels.  About 400 of them did (on Saturday).  They pedaled through the neighborhoods of Columbus, from one to another and then another, on a grand tour called Bike the C-Bus.

From King-Lincoln to Woodland Park.  Into Olde Towne East, German Village and the Brewery District.  Through Downtown and the Arena District and across the river to Franklinton.  Over to Harrison West and Victorian Village.  Up through the University District and into Clintonville.  Down to the Short North.  Back to the historic Lincoln Theatre block of E. Long Street.

Hope to see some UOers here next Thursday. Franklinton Cycleworks is going to have a W Broad St presence across from Tommy's Diner and next to The Florentine.  Support the West Side at a South Side establishment and feel extra good about it(which won't be tough to do with their beer selection).

This seems like an appropriate time to begin the 2011 Festival and Event thread for the Columbus and Central Ohio area.  Winter is fading away and Spring is around the corner.  So let's start with some information on the internationally recognized event that takes over Downtown Columbus this time of year: The Arnold.

Formerly known as The Arnold Classic.  Now known as The Arnold Sports Festival.  Locally known as simply The Arnold.  Whatever you call it, its big!  Here is The Arnold Sports Festival website.  Here is The Arnold page from The Columbus Dispatch for some additional background.

If The Arnold isn't enough, Short North's monthly Gallery Hop is also on Saturday.  When the Arnold and the Gallery Hop are added together, it makes for an amazing night.  And for those with green thumbs, the Central Ohio Home & Garden Show continues at the State Fairgrounds until Sunday.  More about these events, and many more, at Columbus Underground.

I forgot to mention one other big event happening in Columbus this weekend: The state high-school wrestling tournament.  This is the first of three late winter/early spring state high school tournaments that are held at The Schott/Value City Arena on the OSU campus.  The girls high-school basketball tournament and the boys high-school basketball tournament will be held here later this month.  Here's an article about the wrestling tournament from the Dispatch.

Also, an amusing article about what happens when "The Arnold" arrives at The Arnold:

Arnold Sports Festival: Schwarzenegger focus of every eye, camera

Saturday, March 5, 2011  02:53 AM

By Josh Jarman, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As if moving in the eye of a storm, Arnold Schwarzenegger walked through a crowd of thousands of awe-struck fans yesterday, lending his unique star power to the Columbus sports festival that bears his name.

Legions of excited spectators shouted and waved pictures to be autographed.  Grown men and women were brought to near tears by a handshake or photo opportunity as Schwarzenegger walked through the Greater Columbus Convention Center to kick off the Arnold Sports Festival.

The festival runs through Sunday and includes dozens of events at locations across the city, including the convention center and Veterans Memorial.

Plus a slideshow of Arnold at the Arnold

Plenty of meat-heads and bronzed blond women who are twice my shoulder width were walking around yesterday. I'm staying a little ways up north away from all the hub-bub.

No doubt about it.  It's a circus.  But who doesn't love a circus?

The Arnold was great and I should be blogging about it soon on my festival blog.  In the meantime, here's a list of 2011 festivals in Ohio - they've never stopped for the winter...they've just slowed down a bit.

Enjoy!

It's half way over, yes, but there are numerous events still going on to celebrate this most urbane mode of transportation. That includes Columbus' 2nd World Naked Bike Ride in June (the only C in which to participate).

If that's a little too risqué for you there's a ride this Saturday on the 21st in Highland West (east Hilltop) where riders tend to wear clothing.

Its not officially summer yet.  But the Central Ohio festival season starts in earnest this weekend.

  • The 50th anniversary of The Columbus Arts Festival takes place on June 3-5 in the Discovery District of Downtown Columbus.  The Columbus Arts Festival will run from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.  After a three year run in the Discovery District to make way for downtown riverfront construction, organizers plan to move the event back to the Columbus Riverfront in 2012.

Five Stops for Gallery Hop - June 2011

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

June 4, 2011 - 9:00am

Gallery Hop is upon us once again, and as always, there’s plenty of things to see and places to visit.  We’ve decided to distill the Gallery Hop experience down and provide a quick pick for five visits to add to your list if you’re planning on hitting the Short North this evening.

It seemed like there wasnt as many celebrities this year but I did go on Sunday, probably the lamest day.

For those wondering if The Arnold's personal scandal will be imperiling next year's "The Arnold" in Columbus - the answer appears to be "no".

The 'Arnold' will be back despite scandal

Friday, May 27, 2011

By Dean Narciso, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As advance-sale invitations are mailed for next year's Arnold Sports Festival, organizers say they're not changing anything, even as personal scandal envelopes its iconic namesake.

In fact, the Arnold Classic sports-festival concept plans to expand internationally.  "We've gotten a lot of pressure to globalize the event," said Jim Lorimer, a local attorney and co-creator of the event with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Lorimer spoke to his longtime friend last week and confirmed that the former bodybuilder, California governor and movie star will host the Arnold Europe Classic in October in Madrid and commit to Brazil and Moscow versions in subsequent years.
