"The Arnold" is back!  Officially known as the Arnold Sports Festival, the massive sports and fitness expo has returned to Columbus for its 2014 show beginning today and running through Sunday.  Below is the festival's website and a map of event venues in the downtown:

By Anne Evans, Columbus Underground

One of the best festivals in Columbus is getting an exciting boost this year.  Stonewall Columbus has announced George Takei will be the Grand Marshal of this year’s PRIDE Parade.

Grand Marshal George Takei will lead the Pride Parade on Saturday, June 21, 2014.  The parade steps off at 11am - an hour earlier than previous parades - in Downtown Columbus.

Movies are always a big summertime draw in the Capital City.  And not just the ordinary first-run blockbusters at the megaplex.  First, the wonderous downtown venue that is the Ohio Theatre goes back to its original roots and becomes a movie palace again during CAPA's Summer Movie Series:

CU: CAPA Announces 44th Annual Summer Movie Series

A newer trend in summertime movies is recreating the drive-in outdoor movie experience in an urban setting.  It started out a few years back with movies shown in smaller neighborhood parks, then moved up to the large screen at Columbus Commons in downtown.  Now it seems like everyone is getting in on this - from non-profit organizations like the North Market to, well, profit organizations like Easton.  Below is a link to the comprehensive rundown from Columbus Underground:

The excellent Columbus Underground website has posted their excellent rundown of festivals and events in Columbus and Central Ohio for 2014:

This year's Pride Festival was last weekend in Goodale Park.  The Pride Parade was on Saturday in Downtown and the Short North with George Takei being this year's Grand Marshal.

This annual event has gotten huge and even more into the city's mainstream.  The Parade and Festival have also attracted lots of local corporate and CVB attention as this article in the Dispatch reports:

Dispatch: Festival, parade boost city's economy, image as gay-friendly

Here's a few samples of the photo slideshows of the Pride Parade from NBC4 and Columbus Underground (which has two).  The full slideshows are available at the links below (and definately worth viewing):

Great concert at Capital University last night for the 4th party.  Just let the music play in the background. It was a real fun event and the kids all had a blast dancing to some of the 'older' music which you can see in the video.  Enjoy!

Saturday was an extra big night for three big events being held in Columbus:

- The Crew announced an overflow crowd of 21,112 for their match at Crew Stadium on Saturday night (non-SRO capacity is listed at 20,145)

- The Clippers drew an overflow crowd of 10,886 for a Saturday night game at Huntington Park in the Arena District (non-SRO capacity is listed at 10,100)

- And only a few blocks south of the Clippers game, the Jazz and Rib Fest drew an unknown thousands to the Arena District, a closed-down Spring Street and the riverfront.

It’s amazing what a bit of fall-like weather in the middle of July will do to boost attendance. :-)

Gay Street’s Moonlight Market moving indoors for November and December

moonlight-market*304xx2423-3634-41-0.jpg

Hot Chicken Takeover isn't the only pop-up venture heading indoors to escape the cold.

The monthly Columbus Moonlight Market is moving its street vendors inside for the Nov. 8 and Dec. 13 events, where its booths and tables will be spread between the lobby of the Residence Inn Columbus Downtown on Gay Street, the vacant retail space at 90 N. High St. and the private room at Due Amici restaurant. As is the case with past markets, Gay Street retailers and restaurants will stay open late through the event too.

Been meaning to post these holiday lighting images either before Christmas or before New Year's Day . . . but didn't.  However, I thought these colorful lights would be the perfect antidote for this gray winter day.  So here are three lighting events that have been running from December thoughout the 2014 holiday season.

1) Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

2) The Columbus Zoo - Wildlights

3) Downtown - Grand Illumination on the Scioto Mile

The viewing season has passed for the holiday lights at Franklin Park and the Columbus Zoo.  But this season, the lights of the Grand Illumination on the Scioto Mile in downtown will be on display through January 25th in celebration of the NHL All-Star Game being held at Nationwide Arena.

Columbus Underground always does an amazing job with its complete listing of festivals and events in Columbus and Central Ohio every year.  For 2015, they have broken out the marathons, half-marathons, 10ks, 5ks, fun runs and adventure runs into a "race roundup".

Even Janaury has some scheduled runs:  Like a Fantastic Frigid 5K in Delaware, a trail run in Alum Creek State Park, and the NHL All-Star 5K during the upcoming NHL All-Star Weekend in the Arena District.

Columbus may still be in winter's grip, but it's time one again to welcome "The Arnold" (as evidenced by the snow covered statue of Mr. Schwarzenegger in front of the convention center).  This year, the Arnold Sports Festival expands to the State Fairgrounds (aka Ohio Expo Center) in addition to its downtown locations:

Gay Street’s Moonlight Market expanding amid influx of vendors

By Dan Eaton, Staff Reporter - Columbus Business First

April 7, 2015, 10:48am EDT

Moonlight Market starts its third season this Saturday and it’s bigger than ever.  The downtown event along Gay Street kicks off April 11 from 6-11 p.m. and will be held the second Saturday of the month through October.

This year’s market has 160 committed vendors – double from 2014, which was double from 2013.  To accommodate the growth, the market now will stretch along Gay Street from Fourth Street to Front Street.  The original version two years ago was confined to between Third Street and High Street.

Last Saturday's Rolling Stones concert at Ohio Stadium was posted over at the Urbanbar section.  Ohio Stadium has sporadically hosted concerts since Pink Floyd held one in the late 80's.  But it hasn't hosted one for 12 years.  According to the below Business First article, that is changing.  The Stones concert is one of three set for this year:

Rolling Stones concert marks ‘new era of possibilities’ for Ohio Stadium

By Evan Weese, Columbus Business First

Updated June 1, 2015, 7:41am EDT

The Rolling Stones last played in Ohio Stadium in 1997, and it’s been a dozen years since anyone performed at the 'Shoe.  That all changes Saturday as the iconic English rock band rolls through Columbus on its 15-city ZIP Code stadium tour.

( . . . )

Following the Stones into town this summer to play at the 'Shoe will be a slew of country stars June 20-21 for Buckeye Country Superfest, then the English boy band One Direction on Aug. 18.

( . . . )

The 105,000-capacity home of Buckeyes football has become more suitable for huge stadium shows thanks to updates made over the past several years, said Xen Riggs, associate vice president of business and university advancement at Ohio State.  “Certainly having the permanent lights is huge, that’s the biggest one,” Riggs told me.  “Also food and beverage (changes), the south stands.”

Outdoor movies in Central Ohio haven't been this big since the heyday of the drive-in theater.  However, unlike those 20th-century drive-ins, most of these 21th-century outdoor flicks are being shown in parks and plazas located either downtown or in surrounding neighborhoods.  CU has complied a lengthy listing of these locations at the below link:

http://www.columbusunderground.com/summer-movies-under-the-stars-2

Although, there is one summer outdoor movie location that's an homage to the vintage drive-in: The Downtown Drive-In at the North Market parking lot.  A fun throw-back that also benefits a great downtown institution:

timthumb.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.columbusunderground.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F05%2FOutdoorMoviesNorthMarketF.jpg&q=90&w=650&zc=1&

But if you insist on seeing a summer movie indoors, try it at one of the original movie palaces of the 1920's.  CAPA is once again presenting their Summer Movie Series at the amazing Ohio Theatre.  The 45th year for the series since the restoration of the Ohio Theatre.
