I'm not into country music, but this Buckeye Country Superfest is really growing into something big.  This is the second year for the Superfest at Ohio Stadium.  And well over 100,000 attended this year's two-day country concert event:

Adult Swim Programming, South Drive-In Screen

This Thursday, September 1, South Drive-in Theater (2050 South High Street) will host an Adult Swim Drive-In.  The free event will include food trucks, some free concessions, games, pre-show trivia and a photo booth.

Columbus is one of ten cities to participate in Adult Swim’s Drive-In tour.  “Columbus landed on the list because we were looking into interesting and unique classic drive-in movie theaters,” Ashely Jex-Wagner, the director of events for Adult Swim says. “We found South Drive-in and just instantly loved it, so we reached out to them and they’ve been great partners.”

“It’s all content that’s never been seen before,” Jex-Wagner says. “It’s unaired episodes of Adult Swim shows, infomercials, pilots — things like that. Everything that you’ll be seeing is content that you can’t currently see on Adult Swim.”

Admission is free with an RSVP but Jex-Wagner encourages people to show up early.  “Our events have been selling out quite quickly,” she says. “An RSVP does not guarantee admission.” ... The event is 18+ and begins at dusk.  Admission is free with an RSVP at http://www.adultswim.com/presents/.

Green Day was in town Monday.  Which is not really news because they've played here many times before in arenas like the Schott and Nationwide.  The surprise was that they were kicking off their latest world tour in the intimate confines of the venerable campus-area Newport:

Video Game Expo Returns to Columbus This Weekend With a New Name

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

October 27, 2016 - 9:58 am

If you’ve attended OGDE in the past, then you need to head to GDEX this year.  That’s because the previously titled Ohio Game Developers Expo is now known more simply as GDEX.  Event organizer Chris Volpe explained that the name change was to help alleviate confusion and to be more welcoming outside of Ohio.

( . . . )

GDEX takes place on October 29th and 30th at COSI, with a kickoff party on October 28th.  For more information, visit www.thegdex.com.

Pride Festival Relocating to Riverfront in 2017

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

October 27, 2016 - 11:21 am

After six years of celebration in Goodale Park, the Columbus Pride Festival will be relocating Downtown next year, taking place in Bicentennial and Genoa Parks along the riverfront, with a footprint not unlike the Columbus Arts Festival and Jazz & Ribs Fest.

( . . . )

The popular parade portion of the festival will see its route simply reversed, kicking off from the Short North and traveling south on High Street to the Riverfront.  Exact route information and further festival details will be announced in early 2017.

( . . . )

The Columbus Pride Parade celebrated 35 years in 2016, and with over 500,000 people in attendance it is now known as the second largest event of its kind in the Midwest, attracting visitors from around the region and beyond.  The 2017 edition of the event will take place on June 16th and 17th.

There's plenty of Christmas lighting displays in Central Ohio that have been posted about in this thread.  There are the Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo, the Alum Creek State Park Fantasy of Lights, Christmas Corner at the State Auto Building in Downtown, the Statehouse (bathed in red and green lights this year), indoor model railway displays at the Downtown Library and the Franklin Park Conservatory, a 19th-century luminaria display in German Village and a more recent tradition of The Grand Illumination along a newly remade Scioto River in Downtown.

But something different came to Columbus this holiday season:  The Ohio Chinese Lantern Festival

The Ohio Chinese Lantern Festival runs nightly from 5:00PM - 10:00PM in the Natural Resources Park at the Ohio State Expo Center (aka The State Fairgrounds).  This amazing lighting display runs until January 2:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/take-in-lights-and-culture-at-the-ohio-chinese-lantern-festival

PromoWest Fest to return to the Arena District in 2017:

PromoWest Fest Cancelled for 2017

Representatives at PromoWest Productions announced this afternoon that the PromoWest Fest will not return this summer due to a required venue change.  The event is expected to return in 2018 if a new site can be selected and secured in time for planning that year’s event.

The inaugural event took place from July 15 to July 17 at McFerson Commons in The Arena District with nearly 30,000 people in attendance.  Since then, new development has been announced to replace some of the empty surface parking lots near the park with new residences, which means a smaller available footprint and conflicting construction schedules for the festival.

Winter Park outdoor skating rink returns

By Ken Gordon, The Columbus Dispatch

Updated: February 2, 2017 - 8:41 AM

The outdoor rink opens a 24-day run (through Feb. 26), once again located at McFerson Commons across from Nationwide Arena.  The Columbus Blue Jackets will conduct a public practice there at noon on Feb. 10.

This year is the third for the rink, which debuted in conjunction with the 2015 NHL All-Star game at the arena.  "When we saw the popularity of the rink at the All-Star game, it seemed to go over so well, we decided to do it on a regular basis," said J.D. Kershaw, the Blue Jackets' vice president of marketing.  Kershaw said the club has committed to operating the rink through at least 2020.

( . . . )

Admission is $5 and includes skate rental.  One addition this year is a children's tubing slide, provided by Mad River Mountain.  That, too, is included with the $5 admission charge.  Also, a video board will show Blue Jackets games that coincide with public sessions.  And at one end of the rink, a heated tent will allow spectators to stay warm.

IT'S ARNOLD TIME!!!!!

The annual late winter weekend of fitness related wondrousness returns again to CBUS.  The Arnold Sports Festival; aka the Arnold Classic; aka THE ARNOLD:

http://www.arnoldsportsfestival.com/usa/

The estimated 200,000 participants and attendees of the Arnold Sports Festival are either here or on their way into town.  The Arnold is a big time event that is still getting bigger.  The Arnold HQ remains in the downtown Convention Center - hosting the massive vendor expo and the signature bodybuilding events.  But the Arnold's presence at the Ohio Expo Center (aka State Fairgrounds) is the largest its ever been.

Ten buildings on the Fairgrounds are now reserved for Arnold Sports Festival events and competitions.  Plus tons of parking is now reserved there with special bus shuttles running between the Fairgrounds and Downtown.  Those special shuttles and the CBUS shuttle also tie together the ten Arnold sponsored downtown hotels and the nearly hundred restaurants throughout Downtown and the Short North during the Arnold Weekend.

Along with Arnold Sports Festival events, there are some other significant events occurring during the Arnold Weekend:

- Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena last night downtown (nice 1-0 victory over Minnesota for the playoff bound CBJ!).

- Crew opening game at Mapfre Stadium on the Fairgrounds tomorrow afternoon.

- Country music concert at Nationwide Arena tonight with 10,000+ expected.

- Short North holds its very well attended monthly Gallery Hop tomorrow night.

And since we're on the subject of sports and visitors to Columbus, the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in taking place this weekend at OSU's Value City Arena.  This is the first of three big late winter/early spring state high school tournaments held at the Schott (aka Value City Arena).  The OHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament and then the OHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament will be coming to town on the following weekends:

There's also one more big sporting event taking place this weekend in Central Ohio (also next week, next weekend and next year).  This one is little less well-known, but its big for those involved:

LINK:  COLUMBUS TO HOST AMERICAN COLLEGIATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2017 & 2018

According to the above link announcing the tournament, "the ACHA national championships, featuring more than 80 teams and 1,600 players, competing in over 100 games, will be hosted March 9-19, 2017 in Columbus at the OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks (Dublin, Easton, North) and the OhioHealth Ice Haus at Nationwide Arena."  The Ice Haus at Nationwide Arena is the practice rink facility used by the Columbus Blue Jackets and is part of the Nationwide Arena complex in Downtown Columbus.

The American Collegiate Hockey Assocation (ACHA) is the non-profit corporation that governs club or non-varsity college ice hockey in the United States.  The ACHA currently has three men's and two women's divisions and includes approximately 450 teams from across the United States.  It's similar to, but distinct from the NCAA.  The main difference being that ACHA teams don't typically offer athletic scholarships for players on their teams.

According to the wikipedia link: "The ACHA offers an opportunity for college hockey programs that struggle with large budgets and Title IX issues, as an alternative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) financial structure.  Sometimes, NCAA and ACHA teams will compete against one another."  For more about the ACHA and what it does:

There's one more state high school tournament occurring this weekend in Columbus.  The OHSAA Ice Hockey State Tournament is taking place at Nationwide Arena today and tomorrow.  Today features two semifinal games at 1PM and 4PM; the championship game is tomorrow at 2PM:  http://ohsaa.org/sports/icehockey/2017/2017-icehockey-coverage

The inaugural African-American Cultural Festival, sponsored by the City of Columbus, will take place Saturday on the Long Street Bridge that spans I-71.  This bridge features the Long Street Cultural Wall - a 240-foot photographic mural which celebrates African-American culture and history - that was built in by ODOT in 2014:

The Columbus Arts Festival is Friday, Saturday and Sunday along the downtown riverfront.  The Arts Fest is the traditional kick off for the downtown summer festival season.  For its 56th version, the Arts Fest will be held on both sides of the Scioto River, will use the Rich and Main Street bridges for artists booths, and will expand to five stages (with the main stage still being in Bicentennial Park):  https://www.columbusartsfestival.org/festival/festival-map/

Pride Festival is this weekend in C-BUS.  In its 36th year, it has outgrown its former home at Goodale Park and is being held along the downtown riverfront (where most of the large summer festivals are held).  The Festival will be at Bicentennial and Genoa Parks on Friday and Saturday.  The Saturday Parade will lineup/start in the Short North and travel down High Street to Genoa Park next to COSI (a reversal of previous parade routes).

C-BUS has it all!  On Monday, some 500,000+ people crowd into downtown to view what's billed as "the largest fireworks display in the midwest":

Some of the lineup for 90sFEST! has been released, and it’s pretty dope. Headlining will be the group that brought everyone classic tracks “Waterfalls” and “Creep” as well as a self-titled album released this year — TLC. And they’ll be accompanied by other familiar artists from that bygone decade. The nostalgia-fueled music fest makes its Columbus comeback in August, setting up at Columbus Commons.
