A tale of two festivals (or, what's in a name):

Two festivals were scheduled for neighboring downtown riverfront parks on this Saturday.  One - the Chicken & Beer Festival - is returning for its second year.  The second one - the Kale & Ale Festival - was going to have its inaugural event.  While the Chicken & Beer Festival is going to be held on Saturday, June 2nd - the Kale & Ale Festival cancelled its festival due to low ticket sales:

http://www.dispatch.com/news/20180530/eww-kale-festival-event-canceled-due-to-low-ticket-sales

It is possible (even probable) that Kale is not the attraction that the organizers thought it was.  Although the $75 entry price for the festival likely played a bigger role in the low demand (even if it was for an unlimited amount of Kale & Ale!):  http://kaleandalefestival.com/Home/Columbus

The Chicken & Beer festival - in addition to sounding better - is free to the public:  http://chickenandbeerfest.com/

ComFest tapping only local beers for 2018 event

ComFest won’t just be about thinking local this year. It will be about drinking local, too.

When the annual three-day gathering at Goodale Park kicks off June 22, visitors will be served only local beers for the first time in its history.

Four String Brewing Co.’s Hilltop Lager and Hilltop Light gave the festival alternatives to the big domestic brands. Meanwhile Columbus Brewing Co. fills out the rest of the selection with its IPA, Summerteeth and Thunderlips.

Not a very exciting beer line-up.

This weekend's Pride celebration has evolved into one of Columbus' biggest downtown festivals.  The centerpiece is Saturday's Pride Parade that starts in the Short North and finishes at the Pride Festival on the downtown riverfront.  Earlier this week, Pride Week began with the lighting of Columbus City Hall in rainbow colors - joined by the newly renovated LeVeque Tower:

This year's Pride Festival will feature a very special guest: Vice President Mike Pence!

If you think its odd that Mike Pence would be a guest at a Pride Festival, that because its totally coincidental.  VP Pence is scheduled to deliver a speech at a hotel located in Downtown Columbus today - while the Pride Festival is beginning its festivities elsewhere downtown.

But the organizers of the Pride Festival didn't want Mike Pence is feel left out of the Pride festivities.  So they organized a “Big LGBTQ Dance Party” outside of the hotel during his event to welcome him!

Adding to this... as with most Pride events, it was able to draw in some "Christian" protesters who were almost immediately glitter bombed upon arrival. It was a magical moment to witness.

VP Mike Pence sure can draw a crowd . . . of protesters:

The people at the dance party actually were not there to protest, but to make their voices heard.  However there was an actual protest across the street which I heard got ugly on both sides because the left decided to glitter bomb the right. As much as I don't care about either I'm glad the peaceful dance party was shown versus the other and kudos to those folks.

^ Can it be a protest, an opportunity to make their voices heard and a dance party?

Red White & Boom got lucky weather-wise last night.  The worst of the storms missed the downtown and the teeming masses got to see the massive fireworks display without any delays or having to duck for cover.  A couple of photos from last night.

It has just stormed pretty bad, and it's only supposed to get worse over tonight and tomorrow. I'm sure some acts will be cancelled, and attendance will be low.

It figures.  We haven't had any rain for almost two weeks and now we get severe storms during one of the bigger downtown festivals!

We in L.A. know exactly what our weather reporters look like.  We have to keep up on the latest heatwaves and fires.  Look up Dallas Raines and his fist pump.  He's the Dick Goddard of L.A. (Sorry, Columbus thread, Cleveland weatherman reference)

https://www.schottensteincenter.com/events/detail/radiohead

Radiohead is in town for a concert tonight at The Schott.  Apparently this is the first time that this legendary touring band has played a Columbus show in its 33-year existence(!)

I'm surprised that Radiohead are playing Columbus and Cincy, but not Cleveland.  They've played Cleveland a lot over the years and always sell out the show.  Of course, this is only a 16 gig tour, so maybe they will be back to Cleveland later.

You can't expect all 3Cs in one tour these days.

You can't expect all 3Cs in one tour these days.

I agree, that's why I was expecting Cleveland and Cincy and not Columbus, lol.  I think the fact that Radiohead played Detroit, Pittsburgh and Columbus made Cleveland unnecessary as a stop.  A lot of bands do a couple rounds, so maybe they'll be back to Cleveland.  They have played Blossom in Cuyahoga Falls frequently in the past 15 years.

This morning, as the 2018 Ohio State Fair opened, the mother of Tyler Jarrell - who was killed in the FireBall ride accident on the opening day of last year's fair - and Tyler's girlfriend - who was sitting next to him during the accident - led a rally to the site of last year's tragedy to demand that the Ohio Legislature pass “Tyler’s Law” - which would require the Department of Agriculture to hire more ride inspectors and more inspectors with backgrounds in engineering:

One of the iconic parts of the Ohio State Fair is the butter cow sculpture in the Dairy Products Building.  The traditional butter cow is joined by new guests at every new fair.  This year, the 2018 Ohio State Fair is honoring the 35-year anniversary of “A Christmas Story” - the now famous movie that was released in 1983 and filmed in Cleveland.  The highlights include a butter sculpture version of Randy in his snowsuit, Ralphie in his bunny outfit, a Christmas tree with working lights and the leg lamp (of course):

Although I think my favorite is the butter sculpture of Flick with his tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole, along with a butter calf with its tongue stuck to the frozen flagpole:

Music, beers and a hotel preview on tap for BrewDog event

brewdog-agm-projection-dje*750xx5312-2988-0-0.jpg

BrewDog USA is amping up its annual meeting.

The craft brewer will hold its third AGM (Annual General Mayhem) event on Aug. 25 at its Canal Winchester brewery, and it’s a big leap from the first one two years ago when the brewery consisted of a 100,000-square-foot empty box with a makeshift stage and some beer tables.

The music bill this year is headlined by California rockers Cold War Kids, lovelytheband and Joywave alongside a slew of locals including Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons and Parker Louis.

(Been meaning to make this Pelotonia post this over the past two weeks, but just getting around to it now:)

Over the weekend of August 3-5, Pelotonia celebrated its 10th anniversary: http://pelotonia.org/about/history/

"Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research.  Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism.  Through its first nine rides, Pelotonia raised more than $157 million for cancer research.  Thanks to its generous funding partners, Huntington Bank, L Brands Foundation, Peggy and Richard Santulli, American Electric Power Foundation, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Lilly Oncology, Cardinal Health Foundation, Diamond Hill Capital Management, and Nationwide Insurance, Pelotonia is able to direct 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute."

Here is a slideshow of Pelotonia over the years:

It started out in the center of Downtown Columbus next to Columbus Commons:

44071981801_4afca70042_z_d.jpg

For better logistics and to accommodate the growing number of riders, it moved over to the Arena District in later years:

Riders gather in the Arena District on Friday for opening ceremonies - some camping out at McFerson Commons park - before starting their routes on Saturday:

These are the routes for the 10th anniversary 2018 Pelotonia.  The number of routes has expanded over the years to include some non-Columbus routes in Central Ohio, including a Sunday only non-Columbus route.  Funds are raised by each rider based on the route they choose:

$157 million has been raised for cancer research over the first nine Pelotonia's.  This chart shows the money raised from the 2018 Pelotonia to date:

Here are the riders outside the big city and on the rural roads:

Sometimes the rural buildings point the way:

Earlier this month, there was a news item about Rock on the Range possibly moving from Mapfre/Crew Stadium (its home for the past 11 years) to another Central Ohio location.  The concert fest sells out Mapfre with an estimated 140,000 over three days.  But there's been talk that Rock on the Range would like to expand further.  The news item said that Rock on the Range was looking at part of the 1,100-acre Three Creeks Metro Park located southeast of Columbus:

http://www.thisweeknews.com/news/20180810/rock-on-range-eyes-three-creeks-for-show-site

A metro park seemed like a questionable choice for a huge three-day heavy metal festival - particularly because much of the Three Creeks Metro Park is a nature preserve and wetlands:

Rock legend Eric Clapton made a surprise visit to the stage during a recent local fundraiser.  The Grammy award-winning artist is no stranger to Columbus.  Since marrying a local, Clapton has been spotted in and around Central Ohio on several occasions.

But this wasn’t just a celebrity sighting.  Attendees to the Project Blues Review were treated to a four-song set by Clapton when he joined the Jimmie Vaughn Trio on stage.  Project Blues Review is an annual showcase that raises funds for the Columbus Cancer Clinic:

More Rock on the Range news:

Rock on the Range promoter still seeking sites for lucrative events, and Columbus is listening

Los Angeles-based Danny Wimmer Presents wants to find a larger site for Rock on the Range and other possible festivals, and while the suggestion of using Three Creeks Metro Park was nixed, Columbus leaders are eager to find a way to make a deal.
