^ No idea why Business First choose a photo of the Portland visitor section at the 2015 MLS Cup held in Mapfre Stadium in their reporting of the Sonic Temple Festival replacing Rock on the Range at Mapfre Stadium - but here's a photo from the 2018 Rock on the Range and a report about this from the Dispatch:

New festival replaces Rock on the Range

AEG and Danny Wimmer Presents, which had co-owned and operated Rock on the Range, are splitting up after an apparent difference in vision.  In its place comes the Sonic Temple Art and Music Festival, which will debut May 17-19 at Mapfre Stadium.

The festival will be produced by the Los Angeles-based Danny Wimmer Presents, which for 12 years co-owned and operated Rock on the Range with AEG Presents. ... Wimmer envisions an event that can compete with other major music festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee; the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California; and Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Fearful of isolating the festival’s core fanbase, Wimmer said that Sonic Temple will maintain the roster of hard-rock and heavy-metal acts that have drawn sellout crowds since 2013, including 140,000 in May.  But he has dreams of a festival with more stages, art installations, an expanded slate of comedians, more high-profile acts and a wider selection of food and spirits.

While this event has had strong headliners, the mid-card had a reputation for being saturated with Nu-Metal bands. Nu-Metal is a tough sell to say, people who went to college, so I think the idea is to bring in more variety such as more true alternative acts. With a name like Sonic Temple it's pretty obvious...

Columbus concert promoter PromoWest bought by AEG Presents

The veteran Columbus concert promoter PromoWest Productions has been bought by Los Angeles-based AEG Presents, one of the largest concert promoters in the world.  Details of the purchase were not disclosed by the privately held companies.  However, a source close to the deal said the purchase price was more than PromoWest’s $40 million in annual revenue, and that AEG bought half of PromoWest now and will buy the other half in five years.

“It’s a good time to sell,” said Scott Stienecker, founder and CEO of PromoWest Productions.  “The concert industry is at an all-time peak. I’m 58 and I’ve been doing it for 40 years. It was time. In seven years I’ll be 65, so this is a good time to step away.”  As part of the deal, Stienecker will continue to oversee PromoWest Productions as a division of AEG Presents for five to seven years.

PromoWest Productions was founded by Stienecker in 1983 and has grown to be the largest independent promoter in the Midwest.  PromoWest owns and/or manages Express Live!, Newport Music Hall, The Basement and A&R Music Bar in Columbus; Stage AE in Pittsburgh; and Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati. ... Stienecker launched PromoWest after hearing that the Columbus Agora theater was going to close.  He purchased the building, on High Street across from Ohio State University, which became the Newport Music Hall.

AEG Presents is the second-largest concert promoter in the world.  The partnership with PromoWest expands AEG Presents’ presence in the Midwest and comes one year after its acquisition of the historic Agora Theatre in Cleveland.

Not a surprise.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Excerpt from the Business First article and correction of an error in the article.  This article said "Live Nation made an offer to buy AEG".  Based on the context of sentence and from previous reporting in the Dispatch about the sale, the sentence should read "Live Nation made an offer to buy PromoWest".  Below is the corrected sentence in the context of the Business First article:

Scott Stienecker, the president of PromoWest, said that AEG Presents and Live Nation are among companies acquiring independent concert production companies across the country.  Live Nation made an offer to buy (PromoWest), but Stienecker ended up entering into a deal with AEG because the company was already in the market and were the "right fit."

"They're the two 800-pound gorillas doing battle" Stienecker said. "They're either buying you or competing with you, and its getting harder and harder.  It was time to make a decision one way or another." ... "It was only a matter of time – I'm 58 now," Stienecker said. "But I am locked and loaded to run things for the next five to seven years (until I retire,) so I'm not going anywhere."

Here's what was reported in the Dispatch article about Live Nation attempting to purchase PromoWest:

In 2015, Live Nation Entertainment made an offer “which I turned down,” Stienecker said.  AEG Presents began talking to Stienecker a year ago, he said.

“Live Nation is corporate, they’re publicly held,” Stienecker said.  “AEG is privately owned, and after getting to know their senior management, it became more and more clear to me that both of our organizations were built from a common entrepreneurial spirit and culture.”

In addition, AEG has a Columbus connection.  “Shawn Trell grew up in Upper Arlington,” Stienecker said. “He went to high school in Upper Arlington and then left. He’s the guy who cut the deal with me.”

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Well well well.  Could be worse.  I feared a lot worse than this when I heard that RotR was ending amid creative disagreements between the two firms behind it, that its successor was still in a kind of flux, and that the prevailing firm wanted to both cover more fields in order to bring in even bigger mainstream acts as well as to expand the scene to include more art, food, etc.  I honestly heard "cash grab."  And I wasn't completely wrong.  We got good GA tickets last year for $125, so I assume those will now be the $200 ones.  Not thrilled about that.  But have to say I honestly expected worse.

Obviously my priorities as a fan are a little different from the promoters'.  I really liked the fact that RotR was simpler than the other mega-festivals (Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapallooza) that the new team wants to grow RotR to be more like.  I thought it was already a great size.

But I have to admit, Halestorm might make me show up anyway.  Pit GA standing room for her show tonight with In This Moment in Cleveland is $150 by itself--I think secondary market only.  (That said, I saw them from about 20 feet away at Goodyear Hall on a random Tuesday last year, and that was for way less than $150, and it was amazing.)

Might have to go for Pauly Shore!

No one should "go" for Pauly Shore.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Just checking to see if anyone remembers who Pauly Shore is. ?

Sure, he's the Paula Poundstone of Comedy.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Oh my, haven't thought about her since...Bill Clinton was elected?

But wait, if he is the Paula Poundstone of comedy, what is Paula Poundstone the Paula Poundstone of?

Sonic Temple needs to get a hold of PP!!

Paula Poundstone is a regular on the NPR game show Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!

An appropriate title for her.

Columbus Foundation to mark its 75th anniversary with free bus rides, museum admissions

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Columbus Foundation is picking up the tab for a full day of communitywide transportation and cultural exploration on Dec. 29.

All COTA bus rides will be free on the Saturday after Christmas, and no one will pay admission at six of central Ohio’s best-known museums and arts centers: the Columbus Museum of Art, COSI, the Franklin Park Conservatory, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, Ohio History Connection and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

Although the promotion — being called “The Big Explore” — is aimed at boosting visits to those cultural institutions, all COTA lines will be free to all riders, no matter their destination. ... “It’s meant to be a gift to the community,” Doug Kridler, the foundation’s president and CEO.

Black Fashion Expo to Shine A Light on Local Brands, Designers

Nearly 30 local fashion brands and designers will come together for the Black Fashion Expo on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Culture, an event space at 6170 Busch Blvd.

The event is organized by Bobby Couch, a local fashion entrepreneur and the founder of brand and creative consulting firm Fashion is Columbus. He is also the marketing director for Art of Republic and has worked behind the scenes to curate a number of fashion events, including on the team for Fashion Week Columbus.

Couch says he has done a lot of groundwork to get to this point. A University of Cincinnati alum, he says the expo is rooted in something he felt he wanted to do since he moved back to Columbus.

Another year, another weekend dedicated to the citywide takeover known as the Arnold Sports Festival.  The 31st annual Arnold Sports Festival begins Thursday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the Ohio Expo Center and other locations in Downtown Columbus and throughout the city.  This year, a record 80 sports or events will be held throughout the four-day festival that is expected to bring an estimated 200,000 visitors and 22,000 athletes from around the world:

Dispatch sports columnist Michael Arace had an interesting piece about last Saturday's somewhat unique conglomeration of sports events in C-BUS.  From smallest to largest:

  • 375 fans who were at the OSU Ice Rink to see the Ohio State women’s hockey team play Minnesota State
  • 9,322 who were at Value City Arena to see the Ohio State men’s hockey team play Michigan State
  • 17,931 fans who shivered at Mapfre Stadium to watch the Crew’s season-opener with the New York Red Bulls
  • 18,628 — an SRO sellout — at Nationwide Arena for the Blue Jackets-Edmonton Oilers game
  • An estimated 60,000 attendees of the Arnold Sports Festival at the Convention Center and Ohio Expo Center - plus the 31st Arnold Classic bodybuilding competition at Battelle Grand Hall in the Convention Center, which is the signature event at The Arnold

In all, over 100,000 attendees of these multiple sporting events around Columbus last Saturday.

And the sporting events are still coming this weekend with two big state high school tournaments:

In the first of today's semifinal hockey games, Dublin Jerome became the first Central Ohio school to advance to the State Final with a thrilling 3-2 OT win over Hunting Valley University School.  Dublin Jerome will face Cleveland St. Ignatius for the championship game Saturday at 11AM — the matinee hockey game of the day before the CBJ face the Pens at 7PM in Nationwide.

Two big music festivals in Columbus and Nelsonville this weekend:

  • The first music fest is located in a big urban stadium and is all about country music.  The Buckeye County Superfest returns to Ohio Stadium on Saturday.  Much more about it at:  https://www.buckeyecountrysuperfest.com/
  • The second music fest is located in the county, but is not all about county music.  The Nelsonville Music Festival started in Stuart’s Opera House in downtown Nelsonville, then moved to the town square in downtown Nelsonville in 2005, then moved to nearby Hocking College in 2008 as it steadily grew.  It is now celebrating its 15th year:  http://nelsonvillefest.org/

The Columbus Arts Festival - one of the largest of the downtown festivals - is returning to the downtown riverfront for its 58th year.  This year's Arts Fest has a slightly modified layout.  The artists booths have been set up in a more circular route along the Main Street and Rich Street bridges, making it easier to navigate.  And more activities are taking place on the Franklinton side than in previous years.  More about the Arts Fest below:

Another big downtown festival weekend.  This time it is the Pride Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bicentennial and Genoa Parks along the downtown riverfront.  And on Saturday, it will feature the ever-growing Pride Parade from the Short North down High Street to the festival site:  https://columbuspride.org/parade/
