Okeydokeysmokeys, my partner wants to find a place that has "pick your own" pumpkins, preferably within an hour drive of Cleveland. I've looked up plenty of websites and whatnot, and most places are either farm markets or they're advertising "FUN FOR THE KIDS!!!! FACEPAINTING HAYRIDES AND JACK-O-LANTERNS!!!!!!!!". Yeah, the former is lame and the latter is basically torture. Any suggestions for a plain old pumpkin patch?

We used to go to Pattersons Fruit Farm on the east side when I was a kid.  Don't ask me anything about it.....  I moved away in 1974.  Rumor is it still exists, but two locations.  I guess I would favor the original???  if it isn't surrounded by sprawl????

Mayday I had found this site listing different places in NEOhio (county by county) for pumpkins.  Some are pick your own and have websites.

Good luck, and dont forget the to post pictures as in years past!

woops here is the site:    http://www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/OHpcleveland.php

I vote for Maize Valley in Hartville on Rt 619 - it's a farm market, winery, and pumpkin patch all rolled into one.  I know if I'm going to be surrounded by hordes of obnoxious kids, I might benefit from a trip to the wine tasting room...

OH my gawd.  I can't believe you posted this, not 15 minutes ago, my nephew and cousin asked when we were going to pick pumpkins.

Unfortunately were we go, its a "ride" so not for you waaaaaaaaaaaaay to many kids/families.  Pumpking picking and Xmas tree picking are days when I need caffeine on the go.  So I wont make a suggestion.

LOL

I never understood hayrides, even as a little kid.

Also, fyi, if you go to circleville for the pumpkin show, you can buy pumpkin seeds that yield HUGE HUGE pumpkins. I have a few of them that someone gave me. Would be fun to grow one year.

^Me either unless there's a campfire and smores involved, and hay bales will leave marks on exposed flesh if you aren't careful.

That's the thing, to me - I grew up with a small pumpkin patch in our backyard, and failing that - there were farm markets aplenty that had pick-your-own patches. But those were (and some still are) in Columbiana County and that's too much of a schlep. My partner didn't have that growing up (in inner city Cleveland), so he wants the authentic "country bumpkin pumpkin" experience aka going out into the field/patch and getting what you want. I had plenty of authentic "country bumpkin" growing up, so the novelty is lost on me but as long as there's a nearby lunch spot with good beer on tap, I'm game for whatever. I think I found a place near Hiram that'll work :-)

Most of the places around here - well, people scoff at the idea of 1. walking onto actual dirt, 2. ruining their shoes, and 3. dirtying their hands, so they'd rather "pick" pumpkins off a shelf or even better a piece of "primitive farm equipment" with the pumpkins nicely washed and arranged on it. I went to one place where some Richfield soccer moms were ogling what they thought was an old farming cart. One said aloud "I'd love something like this by the entrance to my driveway!" I was all too happy to tell them that they were marveling at a good ol' fashion sh!t spreader (manure cart for you fancy types).

MayDay, I feel like your partner.  When we were kids it was so fun to load up the 30 Cousin and head out to get fresh maple syrup, pumpkins or that perfect Xmas tree.

As soon as we (the cousins)  moved it our or parents homes, it went away.  Now that most of the 31 cousins have children it's fun to take the kids out and watch them easter egg hunt, plants trees, go on pick pumpkins, etc.

I can't wait to go out and pick pumpkins, I love that stuff.
