Consolidated Grain

Got word from Gordon Bombay (Ronny) that Consolidated Grain on the west side of Cincinnati was being demolished yesterday. I took a quiet drive to check it out last night and returned this evening for photographs. I don't have much information on this, outside that it was served on the former Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton mainline -- a line that saw a major drop in traffic after Queensgate was constructed. Traffic switched to the Winton Place connection, constructed in 1970.

As always, see my site above for more photographs. The first eight below were taken by Craig Moyer.

14 They were taking a metal beam into the structure to knock it down. It worked with four silos... but not these. They are unsure on how to proceed now.

15 The area was completely unsecured, and I am not sure if the developers had a permit to even do this.

16 Fun, but the bottom levels smelled like sh!t. Literally. Moldy grain resting at the bottom in sludge and water.

17 Goodbye Consolidated. You offered some great views, but not much else.

The color images were taken with a Nikon D70; the black-and-whites were taken with a Nikon D3 with varying ISOs from 200 to 800.

Pretty awesome shots. You got 'way up there!

Gases from moldy grain can be quickly lethal, and the gases (oxides of nitrogen, I think) are heavier than air and collect in the bottom of enclosed spaces.

Not long ago there was an incident somewhere around here where one guy cleaning a bin was overcome, and two would-be rescuers collapsed, too. All 3 died before properly-equipped firefighters could get to them.

I've probably mentioned that before, and I know you've been around, but just in case, be very careful.

Great photos Sherman! I'm gonna have to stop by there tomorrow morning before heading on to do "real work." I remember the first time I met you, you told me about this place and about a month later a friend and I went to explore it once it was warmer. If you didn't mind the hobos, human fecal matter, terrible smell of the moldy grain, heights, rusty stairs, and dead birds. . . then you were rewarded with a nice view once you reached the summit:

Dang...I heard that place had pretty tight security, and you still snuck in there, or did you guys get permission somehow?

Oh, the interior photos were from several years ago, and we actually just drove around the back and parked.

Someone IMed me a few weeks ago saying they got in with no trouble, but that the police had been called. They had a close escape out. I suppose it was because the developers were working to have it demolished.

Yesterday's photos were taken from the street and from a local business, who granted me permission to walk about their lot. I wasn't the first one apparently to do so :)

Awesome.

I second that!

Wow, just to let you know, Photos 1-8 are actually Craig's (Tron 2.0). I had them stored at Abandoned but it's been years since I've even touched the gallery, and didn't know that until today! He has a good eye for photos :)

My photograph I posted is from some time in 2007. I parked on the street and the only person who questioned me was a homeless man with a colt .45 back by the silos. I was down there this morning to grab a few photos and chatted with one of the security guards who didn't mind me taking photographs, very nice lady. Seems there has been a hold up with the implosion as they've been having trouble tearing it down.
