Get ready for Twister

R.I.P., Zoom Flume

 

The Zoom Flume, the sturdy wooden waterslide that stood 50 feet above Coney Island's Sunlite Pool for more than three decades, has been smashed to pieces.  Make way for the Twister.  On Memorial Day weekend, Coney Island will open what president Vic Nolting calls "the biggest single project we've done" at the pool - a $2 million, four-slide structure that nearly triples the length of its predecessor.

 

The Zoom "was huge - it was really the first major waterslide in this part of the country," Nolting said.  "It had served the park well, carried millions and millions of riders, but the weather and the elements and the water were hard on it."

I'm glad that the park will finally see something new after all this time.  I do remember fondly trips to Coney and riding the Zoom Flume...
