Hi, my name is John and I live in Wisconsin. I will be visiting Cleveland this coming weekend Thursday through Saturday. I would like to hear from any Clevelanders about their favorite restaurants.

I have been to Slyman's, The Happy Dog, and Melt Bar and Grilled. I found all three places to be excellent. So if anyone knows of some good, old, or interesting restaurants, I'd love to hear about them and where in the city they are located.

Thanks!

Hey John, welcome

Here are a few questions?

[*]Do you want just general restaurant recommendations?

[*]Is this a special occasioin?

[*]Will you have your own transportation or will you be taking public transportation?

[*]Where in Cleveland will you be staying so we can give recomendations with in close proximity and directions to restaurants outside that neighborhood?

[*]Is there a price point/budget you would like to spend?

[*]How many diners?

[*]Are there any special meal request? (ie. vegetarian, allergies, etc.)

I would recommend the Waterstreet Grill in the Warehouse District.  It's on West 9th across from the Bingham.  Their Southwestern Fettuccine Pasta is one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had!  I've also had their sirloin and that was delicious as well.  It's officially become me and my girlfriends 'place'.

The prices are pretty reasonable too... check out the menu.

Thanks MyTwo Sense!

1. Yes, that would be great.

2. Not really, its just a recreational trip. I love old cities and architecture and the game plan as of now is to drive around and explore neighborhoods with my camera.

3. I will have a car.

4. I will be staying near University Circle/Case Western Reserve area.

5. No real budget, although I'm not really looking for anything fancy.

6. Two diners

7. Very much an advocate of meat. Any good burger places, pizza, Mexican, Chinese food. Anything interesting. I will eat just about anything (please don't take that the wrong way).

MTS and others will probably have downtown covered, so I'll leave that to them as I'm still exploring (moved downtown a couple months ago).

However, since you'll be by Case, there are a handful of GREAT Middle-Eastern/Greek/Indian places.  There's Falafel Cafe (not open on Sundays) at the corner of Euclid and Mayfield/Ford.  There's Aladdin's Eatery at the intersection of Cedar and Fairmount, and then right across the street there is the Mad Greek.  If you'd like a place to get a couple of tasty drinks, The Fairmount makes some mean Martinis (it's also at the corner of Cedar and Fairmount).

Finally, if you'd like some "down-home" cooking, check out Hot Sauce Williams at the corner of E. 79th and Carnegie.  Best pork shoulder and fried chicken in town!

Since you'll be in Unviersity Circle.

[*]You have easy walking access to Little Italy.

[*]Take a bus or  five minute drive to Shaker Square

[*]Take a bus or 10 minute drive to Coventry

[*]Take a bus or 10 minute drive to ChinaTown/Asian Village

[*]Take the HealthLine or RTA Redline downtown to many amazing restaurants

[*]RTA Redline or Drive over to Ohio City, Detroit-Shoreway or Tremont

I say check out Table 45 (www.tbl45.com) at the Cleveland Clinic.  Simply amazing.

There are a couple of there places that have opened Jim, TheGuv or MapBoy can chime in.

There are more places and I'm sure the UO family will post away.

Please let us know where you dine while in town and PLEASE post pictures.

Anatolia Cafe is Turkish, and delcious! Try the yogurt dishes. One of the tastiest restos in Cleveland. It is inexpensive-moderate http://www.anatoliacafe.com/index.php

Bar Cento  http://chefsawyer.blogspot.com/ (not offical web site but good food info)    and Lolita are also great http://lolabistro.com/ (website includes higher end sibling Lola).

Sokolowski's was a Polish factory worker cafeteria that has stood the test of time and most people love it. Pierogis are a must and then just add things from there. I have had a lot of fun going on Sat. nights. there is a piano player!!! Maybe find some Polka too while in Cleve.http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17436.0.html    Although you have that in Wisconson I am sure.

no food visit to cleveland would be complete w/o a visit to the westside market:  Westsidemarket.com.  There is mostly fresh food but some prepared items as well. so many more, but I am pressed for time...

Go to the Westside Market on a Saturday morning :)

I second the recommendation for Anatolia, particularly if you're a meat eater.  This is the only place I've ever been able to tolerate eating lamb, their lamb is positively tasty, as are their other kebabs/meat.

Downtown I recommend Crop (www.cropbistro.com), Bice (www.bicecleveland.com) and the Chophouse & Brewery, as well as Lola, which I consider Cleveland's crown jewel (www.lolabistro.com).

I also second the recommendation of a visit to the West Side Market on Saturday morning. There's really nothing else like it.  If you go early, get a yummy crepe and coffee from City Roast, and get some fresh squeezed juice from the juice stand next to Michelle's bakery.  If you go later morning, I recommend Maha's Falafil (sic), it's the best falafel sandwich I've ever had.  Many are also partial to the bratwurst sandwich stand. Or you can get a very decent breakfast in the market's cafe.

Thanks so much everybody. It looks like I've got a lot of great options for the weekend.

I guess this is a little off my original topic, but are there any cinema's or good performance companies in the city? I know Euclid Avenue is the theater district, but I don't know too much else about where to see a good play in the city. If anyone knows about theaters or productions going on, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks again,

John

Playhouse Square has a website with all the info you need on theater performances:

http://playhousesquare.org/

There's an events calendar, but off the top of my head, I know that "Macbeth" and "Into the Woods" are being performed at the Hanna, and Opera Cleveland is performing Humperdink's "Hansel and Gretel" at the State Theater.

As far as cinema, Tower City Center (downtown) has a cinema, as does Shaker Square (on the blue and green Rapid lines.)  Of the two, I'd recommend Shaker Square, simply because the theater is old and absolutely beautiful inside.  If you want to see independent films, try the Cedar-Lee in Cleveland Heights.  All three cinemas are Cleveland Cinemas:

http://www.clevelandcinemas.com/

Or, for independent and foreign films, check out the Cleveland Institute of Art's Cinémathèque.  It's on Wade Oval in University Circle (especially convenient if that's where you're staying.)  Website:

http://www.cia.edu/academicResources/cinematheque/cinematheque.php

Hope that helps, and I hope you enjoy your visit!

I'm new to Cleveland so I don't have the expertise most on here do but please post your pictures when you return home.  I've been busy since I moved here so I tour the city through the pictures on UO.

I'm going to see Into the Woods on Saturday!  Wohoo! :-D  I'm pretty sure there are still tickets.

Thanks so much everybody. It looks like I've got a lot of great options for the weekend.

We have a lot of great local theater going on.  Playhouse Square is primarily touring company shows which don't represent Cleveland actors/talent.

Downtown we have the Bang & Clatter theater.  This weekend they will be running International House of Hamburgers with a preview night on Thursday: http://www.bnctheatre.com/  I'm pretty sure Preview nights are "pay what you can."  Cleveland Public Theater is running a show called Goldstar: http://www.cptonline.org/  Both theaters produce a lot of great theater.  You can find some reviews of current performances on Tony Brown's blog, he's the plain dealer theater critic: http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/

I was at Mallorca on Saturday night, that restaurant never disappoints. It's Portuegese cuisine- the shellfish dishes are amazing, the wait staff is mostly Portuegese, Brazilian, and Spanish. The best part is the complimentary almond liqueur they serve at the end.

I love their Paella.  I better not say that near my Abuela!  :-o

I second the recommendation for Sokolowski's & West Side Market on a Saturday morning

I humbly add in the Parkview @ 4 blocks north of Detroit on W. 58
