I think this would be a fun thread. I do a lot of traveling and photography, and people are amazed at just what can be found in their own home state or nearby.

Take for instance, Kentucky. My home state that is chock full of natural wonders such as Red River Gorge and Pine Mountain, and backroads such as Old Frankfort Pike. I have friends who leave for "greenier" pastures during the summer. Some take a liking to Colorado's high backcountry; others head to New York state to backpack in the Adirondacks; some even go as far as to head to Europe to experience it there.

But what they forget is that many of the same experiences can be had for much cheaper in their local region. I frequently show them photographs of various locales -- from that unnamed peak along Pine Mountain, to the seemingly unbounded wildernesses in West Virginia. They are amazed at just what they have missed, and often come to me know as a trail guide :)

The following photos are from either Kentucky, Ohio or West Virginia to keep it simple. I'll provide three clues as to its region and give at least two days before answering, unless someone else beats me to it :)

Clue 1: It contains flora that is reminiscent of Canada and Maine.

Clue 2: It is near this state's highest lake (bonus if you know the lake name).

Clue 3: It features many huckleberry bushes.

Who are you?  The new "Carmen Sandiego"??

Gotta be TN, WV or VA

edit: Shawangunk(wtf?) Ridge/ Lake Maratanza - area?

^^No, Indiana Jones, albeit without the hat (yet).

^Kentucky, Ohio or West Virginia

D@mnit I thought I had it. That lake has the highest elevation in NY. There's also plenty of Huckleberry bushes.

Considering he said the photos are from OH, WV, or KY.... I'm going to go with somewhere in West Virginia.

Is it Spruce Knob Lake? In West Virginia?

Well we know how you like your baseball hats!

MTS shouldn't you be mustering up something for another thread too? hhhmmm??

Man seicer is by far the most dynamic photographer on here. Abandoned nuclear silos, churches, smokey mountains, cities...

My first thought when I saw the photo was West Virginia, too. The comment about vegetation similar to Maine or Canada made me think of Monongahela National Forest; the area had abundant red spruce that was mostly logged off in the first half of the 20th century, and regrowth has been slow, especially at the higher elevations. Even in mid-summer it can be suprisingly chilly up there.

I think Neville pegged it.

Yeah, it looks like Spruce Knob.

+1 Neville

Spruce Knob

A side trail to the northeast, aptly named the Huckleberry Trail, meanders amongst huckleberry and blueberry bushes, and many spruce variants. Spruce Knob Lake is just down the hill and is the state's highest lake.

New one in a day or two!

1. I am considered one of President Lincoln's best friends.

2. Rumors that we were involved in homosexual conduct have been discredited.

3. My house was designed to resemble that of an architectural plan by Thomas Jefferson.

I do believe that you would be inside Farmington, the childhood home of Joshua Speed, Lincoln's best friend.  I do believe that Farmington is located in/near Louisville, Kentucky.

I am LOVING that table!

1. It's in the Queen City.

2. Constructed in 1907.

3. Adjacent to this is a United Way community center.

Oh My God... I'm positive I lived next to that building lol I'll let someone else guess.

Were the creepy steps closed off?  lol

Oh shit yes you have! Yes, they are closed. Creepy ??

Well I kinda want to see these steps now!

The above photograph was taken at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, located in Sedamsville, Cincinnati, Ohio. I've not really photographed the school before, and was there with Ronny, but did not gain entry.

The steps actually lead nowhere.

I think David won this one, only because he lived really close to this (!).

There are some hidden trails around there that lead to mt. echo park in price hill. I can recall where one is but you have to walk on private property.

The more specific, the better!

1. Unfortunately, Ohio does not have mountains.

2. I'm still a youngin', according to Rob.

3. I saw hippies abound.

Nowhere in the East has mountains except New England and those Smokey things.

Somewhere in VA?

It's in Ohio.

Hocking Hills?

Shawnee State Forest?

Old Man's Cave State Park in Hocking Hills.

Ripley!

I think we should do an UrbanOhio camping trip. Lets go to the Indiana Sand Dunes this summer. It could be on a weekend so very little schedule conflict. I haven't been camping since I went to Red River Gorge almost 2 years ago. Nothing like the smell of food cooking over charcoal or firewood in the morning :) Who would be up for it?

Old Man's Cave State Park in Hocking Hills.

I loooovvee that place! I used to go there all the time when I was little.

I'm going backpacking and camping this weekend. Come!!

when you go, make sure to check out Devil's Bathtub (hard to miss) and know that I fell in there in March 2005 and couldn't get out.  Soooo cold.

And to give an answer: Eighth and State was partially correct in stating that it was in Old Man's Cave State Park. BDRUF stated simply Hocking Hills. In actuality, it is part of Hocking Hills State Park, and the photo was taken at the Old Man's Cave section. The waterfall is Upper Falls.

:D

There is a plaque that gives a description of the Devil's Bathrub. It's apparantly deeper than what most people think, and really, really hard to get out of.

I'm going backpacking and camping this weekend. Come!!

Thanks for the 2 day notice!

Isn't that thing supposed to suck you into the 7th circle of hell? lol or at least that's the legend or something. Jeez. You survived the devil's bathtub. Crazy.

I haven't gone camping since I was a kid, nor have I been to the Indiana dunes.  Sounds like a great idea, especially since I'm doing zilch for the next two months.

Hey, he shows up to forum meets. When is the last time you showed your face? You could be Hannibal Lecter for all I know.

Hannibal Lecter?  Lord!  He comes to forum meets, that makes sherman more safe than me?  He's an only child and a mama's boy!  He statically "out crazies" me!  Now HUSH!

Don't say nothin' when you're attacked in your sleeping bag!

I'm just glad Sherman is patient taking photos when in those abandoned places.  I feel like the Michigan Central Station visits for forum meetups are like 17 floors in 15 minutes.

Hey if we do camp at Indiana dunes, Chicago must be in the plans shortly after.

There are two camping areas, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park. I used to camp at the state park 2 - 3 times a year, but haven't done that since they completely rehabbed the campgrounds about 3 years ago. I always went before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, and for summer weekends I recommend reservations.

The state park has gorgeous beaches and trails through dunes, forest, and marsh woodland. For a day trip to Chicago, catch a South Shore train at Dune Park station, a walkable/bikeable mile from the campgrounds via the park entrance road and a short trail.

Of course dude, that's why I suggested the Dunes.

We're gonna have to figure out how to get a large tent though. I gave mine away a long time ago like an idiot. I do have a really nice propane grill. It even has a gas stove burner and griddle on it. I can't wait to cook on that thing.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind.

I think my father bought a really nice North Face tent about a decade ago for what was supposed to be family trips.  But then he started his PhD program and my sister went off to college.  So much for that.  I'm sure my parents would be more than happy to lend it if they can find it.

I seriously can't remember the last time I camped using a tent.  There was those leadership camps (that looked good on college aps) I went to back in high school, but we stayed in barracks or cabins with modern amenities.

Maybe Sherman would suggest we stay at the abandoned Brach's Candy Factory west of Chicago.  We won't even need food when we can scoop up the spilled corn syrup on the floor.  I heard every floor is a different flavor.  We nay be able to pass on the stove too David, because I hear they still have the fire canons form filming the Batman movie there.

Mmm corn syrup.

No, screw cabins. That's not camping. Last time I went camping was at Red River Gorge about a year and a half ago I think it was. We ate Ramen noodles from a propane stove lol. The showers sucked. The water was cold and it had some wind up timer thing that lasted about 5 seconds so you're constantly winding it up to get more water in your shower. That's one thing I can't stand, having to shower with cold water.

so an UrbanOhio camping trip in Indiana?  well...since I will be an Indiana resident, I am in!

That's one thing I can't stand, having to shower with cold water.

I'm guessing you're not that lucky with the ladies.  I see a lot of cold showers in your future!!  :-D
