The gang's all here

Purse, perks, schedule attract ATP's top players

MASON - When the world's top men's tennis players gathered in England for Wimbledon in late June, a virtual who's-who led the field.

The top five, including finalists Roger Federer and Andy Roddick, were there, as would be expected for a Grand Slam tournament.

What might be more surprising is that those same players are all here at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters. In fact, it is the first time since Wimbledon that the top five players have shown up for the same tournament.

...snip...

WHO RULES THE REGION?

The heart of Midwestern tennis resides in Mason and Indianapolis, where the only two ATP Tour events in this part of the country take place. Here's a glance at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and the RCA Championships in Indianapolis.

I've been watching some of the matches on ESPN and there are a lot of W&S commericals including one that promotes downtown Cincinnati. It includes a shot of the in progress "soon to be home office ;-)" Queen City Square. It nice little promo seen by a few million.

Hmmm...I don't have cable or satellite anymore (at least for the summer), so I'm glad to hear the city's getting promoted!

Serena Williams to play here

BY DUSTIN DOW | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Serena Williams, a seven-time grand slam winner, has accepted a wild card into the field for July’s Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open.

This will be Williams first tournament since January’s Australian Open. Williams has been sidelined by injuries since then.

“I have decided to return to competitive tennis at Cincinnati’s Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, the week of July 17,” Williams said in a statement.
