Posted October 30, 200816 yr I'm usually a very observant person, but I've consistently missed something in regard to a certain home in Hamilton's Rossville Historic District. Does any obvious alteration stick out to anyone in this image? (look for a clue)
October 30, 200816 yr The entire right side and the porch looks like an addition. I agree. It looks like it got a Queen Anne addition. Also the dormer looks like 1920s, and I'm not sure what that thing is sticking out of the roof. At first I thought it might be the truncated remains of a belvedere but the proportions are wrong, and then I saw the vent pipe sticking out of it. They may have done that to get room to install a furnace in the attic, to heat the 2nd story.

October 30, 200816 yr I think the porch was altered and windows above the porch - mid right - were removed. Looks like an 80s update - screw up.
October 30, 200816 yr It looks like the section above the porch on the inset corner is new... there is a seam in the middle of the left wall and the window on the rounded portion on the second story doesn't have the cap like the other windows. There is also a seam just to the right of that window. Wonder what happened. Also, how old is this house? It looks like it has vinyl siding!
October 30, 200816 yr Also, how old is this house? It looks like it has vinyl siding! Nope, the home is historic and the siding is wood.
October 30, 200816 yr If I had a better view, in addition to my previous comments, I would say they've tried to make this a "two family" house.
October 30, 200816 yr Well, the roof of the house is obviously different from the little gazebo structure in the yard. I would guess the green roof probably was part of the house as well at one time? The roof shingles look too new.
October 30, 200816 yr i almost looks the upper most feature's roof is a different color. It could just be the angle of the pic though... hard to tell.
October 30, 200816 yr The thing in the yard to the right of the house... was it supposed to be attached to the roof?
October 30, 200816 yr I agree neville. I think the cupola? that sits on the ground to the right of the hose was once atattched to the top of the roof. Then, the back roof area was raised and the dormer added. Along with that whole rounded addition to the side.
October 30, 200816 yr I think there was a whole third floor added above what would have been an attic. That dormer is out of place, as is the mass behind it and doesnt look right above those small "attic" windows.
October 30, 200816 yr If someone knows just tell us. It's obvious that there has been some construction on this house, but to what extent i cannot say.
October 30, 200816 yr Yep, you guys solved it: This once sat atop the square frame on the roof. I'm not sure about the chronology of other changes though.
October 30, 200816 yr Interesting. Wonder why they did that? I think it would be far more interesting on the roof.
October 30, 200816 yr The first floor windows on the turret addition look wack. I also would have painted the house a color.
October 30, 200816 yr The first floor windows on the turret addition look wack. I also would have painted the house a color. Personally, I think painting the house would expose the flaws and badly executed addition.
October 30, 200816 yr Maybe you're right. I just hate white houses. Maybe an accent color would work? No way in hell I'd buy a white washed house of siding. That's the fun of siding - you can paint it.
