Ohio Edison Coal Power Plant

See the above URL for more photographs.

Constructed in Toronto, Ohio along the banks of the Ohio River, the Ohio Edison Coal Power Plant consisted of four units that were brought on line between 1925 and 1928. Three additional units were constructed in the 1940s, which resulted in the construction of a 650-foot smokestack.

The four original units were taken out of service in 1970 after they had approached the end of their useful life. The power plant was later converted into an experimental clean fuel facility in the early 1990s, converting ground tire pellets into fuel for the boilers. The plant was closed in 1993.

On November 1, 2008, the smoke stack of the power plant will be imploded. Demolition of the remaining sections of the power plant will continue into spring 2009.

9 Goodbye, old friend.

Seicer, I pray you cover your mouth when you visits these types of places.

You would be a good movie scout!

Honey, you explore strange places and boldly go where no (sane) man has gone before.

Thanks :)

Getting in was difficult. Climbing through brush and crossing a creek, or following old SR 7 and climb through a fence? Trying to find a way through steel doors or climbing onto a roof, dodging holes in a roof, climbing a conveyor, scaling a staircase that was near collapse?

It was fun and one of my favorite locations that I didn't visit enough :(

All I can do is pray for you!  Laaaaaaaaaaawd!

Is that Burj Dubai in the background on #6? Aren't you worried about being attacked by the crazies living in these abandoned structures...you are invading their territory ya know.

It's sad to see these places get into such a state. The old-school coal-fired power plants were the very essence of industrial technology when they were operating. Their pure functional design made them beautiful.

You would be a good movie scout!

Yeah I can just picture scenes from the Terminator being shot inside this plant.  Great shots Sherman.

Thanks!

Sweet shots. I like that all of the lock-out tags are still hanging in pic 7.

Interesting shots!  Love abandon stuff.
