September 14, 20168 yr Charlotte Receives $25 Million Federal Grant To Build Historic Gateway Station #persistence #10yroldplan #Cleveland https://t.co/CQ8Bxnx4kI "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 14, 20168 yr ^Cleveland just has to stick with its plan, fine tune it and reapply-- it makes too much sense, esp now that local leaders have gotten NCTC's location right: west of E.9th street. I would love for the ped bridge to be a part of the package, but am not optimistic -- I think local leaders are more worried about the bridge's looks and probably feel that such a connection may mess them up. I hope Hillary is elected and keeps the TIGER program going which I think is a great thing even though, obviously, the grants are quite competitive. I fear that if Team Trump gets in (perish the thought!!) TIGER would be history.
September 15, 20168 yr ^I believe the FAST Act sets aside $500 million for TIGER each year thru 2020. What kind of projects are awarded funds (more traditional highway v. transit or active transportation) could be influenced by administration changes, I would assume.
November 21, 20168 yr So two bike/ped bridges -- one spanning the lakefront tracks and the other the Shoreway -- at East 18th are proposed and would cost $9.8 million in total. There's about $30 million amassed for the much fancier bridge linking the convention center to North Coast Harbor. I keep wonder if city officials will wonder if a transportation center is more valuable than a fancy bridge? If we built two basic bridges, we could use the leftover $20 million on the local funding share for a transportation center in between the two basic bridges. November 28, 20168 yr I'm told the city will resubmit its TIGER grant application for this project in 2017. Not sure what funding will be available as Congress hasn't passed the 2017 transportation appropriations bill. It's also possible the city will alter its funding request and expand the scope of the project to include railroad infrastructure improvements that ease rail traffic congestion near the station that is causing traffic jams that proliferate throughout the Chicago-East Coast rail system. All Aboard Ohio issued a white paper on the Cleveland station rail traffic congestion issues, available at: http://freepdfhosting.com/34041eeab4.pdf "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 5, 20178 yr "In 2015, the city announced it was working with Amtrak, Greyhound and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority on plans for a new intermodal transit hub on or near the central lakefront, but it hasn't updated the community recently." -- from today's Steve Litt article regarding the ped bridge. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2017/01/decision_on_pedestrian_bridge.html#incart_m-rpt-2
