Posted November 8, 200816 yr Full story: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/07/greathomesanddestinations/07havens.html HAVENS | PUT-IN-BAY, OHIO Key West of the Great Lakes MORE than 70 years ago Ernie Pyle, in his itinerant-travel-writer phase, traveled to Ohio’s Lake Erie shore and wrote about a village on South Bass Island called Put-in-Bay. Caribbean-style cruise ships plied the Great Lakes then, and Put-in-Bay was a favored, and lively, stop. “Put-in-Bay is the capital, you might say, of the Lake Erie islands,” Pyle wrote before adding, “Put-in-Bay lives off wine and summer excursionists.” Save for a few details, Pyle got it right — then and now. November 8, 200816 yr more proof that most people have NO IDEA of the diversity in this midwest state that they just refer to as "fly-over country". The Erie Islands are amazingly beautiful. Check out Put-In-Bay for Halloween sometime....a total freakin blast!!
November 8, 200816 yr actually, it's the other way around being as clevelanders founded miami, key west is the put in bay of florida. but the nytimes would never lead with an angle like that as they all feel miami & the whole se florida region are a nyc suburb.
November 10, 200816 yr Where are the gays?? Key West is very gay. I don't get the same feeling about Put-in-Bay.
November 14, 200816 yr there are no or few gays in pib, nor are there palm trees, nor six toed cats....ect., but even still pib & key west are like twins separated at birth.
November 14, 200816 yr there are no or few gays in pib, nor are there palm trees, nor six toed cats....ect., but even still pib & key west are like twins separated at birth. The Beer Barrel has those hideous neon plam trees though! actually, it's the other way around being as clevelanders founded miami, key west is the put in bay of florida. but the nytimes would never lead with an angle like that as they all feel miami & the whole se florida region are a nyc suburb. Very true...PIB was Key West before Key West was Key West. The Hotel Victory was once the world's largest hotel; Presidents, Actors, Musicians and anyone with tons of money used to frequent the Island in the 1800's. There is the annual "Put-in-Bay Days" in Key West though...quite an event!
November 15, 200816 yr ^ "PIB Days" in Key West is a blast.......not like KW isn't fun enough pretty much all the time :drunk:  :-D
November 17, 200816 yr Where are the gays?? Key West is very gay. I don't get the same feeling about Put-in-Bay. Is Key West still that gay? I thought it has been eclipsed somewhat by P-Town.
November 17, 200816 yr actually, it's the other way around being as clevelanders founded miami, I think people from Canton founded Daytona Beach (no connection with Dayton, despite the name).
November 17, 200816 yr Where are the gays?? Key West is very gay. I don't get the same feeling about Put-in-Bay. Is Key West still that gay? I thought it has been eclipsed somewhat by P-Town. They both have their markets. P-Town is much less diverse than KW. The Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, keys' corridor is very very gay friendly.
November 17, 200816 yr I never went south of Miami unfortunately. The first thing people think of when they think of Key West is the nice weather. I don't see how you can compare it to Put-in-Bay.

You've obvisouly never been to either place. They are both Island communities with similar cultures and atmospheres that are popular tourist destinations.
November 17, 200816 yr Speaking of... KEY WEST, FL February 12-14, 2009 Sloppy Joe's 5th Annual Put-In-Bay Music Fest Schedule of entertainers to be announced. http://sloppyjoes.com/events.htm

Whats the temperature at Put in Bay vs. Key west right now? The fact that they called it the "Key West of the Great Lakes" speaks volumes. Any time they use the "It's the [insert exceptional place here] of the [insert region here]" its due to an inferiority complex. Places need to stop doing this and create their own niche instead of trying to mock other places. You'll never hear Key West being called the "Put in Bay of the Florida Keys".
November 17, 200816 yr True. I'm a spiteful scorpio from hell. Sorry shs. I can understand they're similar but I still hate the [insert exceptional place here] of the [insert region here]" bs. It automatically denotes inferiority. It's like the whole "The Harvard of Canada" thing.
November 17, 200816 yr oh come on david, no it isnt. did you miss they have "put in bay days" in key west? and they have since i can remember. you really should go see both places sometime, each are wonderful in their own ways, but the party-hearty island lifestyle is very similar. also, a lot of service industry people work the warm weather bar circuit. they work at pib in summer and switch to kw in winter.
November 17, 200816 yr Though I've never been, PIB always seemed like it is kind of gritty where as I never got that vibe from KW.
November 17, 200816 yr Though I've never been, PIB always seemed like it is kind of gritty where as I never got that vibe from KW. Thats because most Queens don't like grit!
I can assure you, there is no inferiority complex. It's a marketing ploy used by some, but its mainly used by writers such as in the article to give people an idea of what PIB is. As C-Dawg pointed out, many people don't even know PIB exists, let alone know what it offers. My wife - being from Ft. Lauderdale - had never heard of it until she moved here. When we took her parents to PIB after talking about it for years, they were shocked to know that anything like this even existed in Ohio. You'd be amazed at the number of people outside of the Midwest who don't even understand the enormity of the Great Lakes...they're surprised you can't see across it. Key West has more name recognition and it's something people can make an association with. And next time you want to think about "nice weather" in Key West, think about what its like there from May-October...hot, humid, daily thunderstorms, and the occasional tropical storm or hurricane. They are both seasonal places which is why there are many people who work at PIB in the summer then head down to Key West to work in the winter...rinse, lather, repeat.
November 18, 200816 yr I would only be offended if the Blade or the Plain Dealer referred to PIB as the "Key West of the Great Lakes". Otherwise, it is simply a perspective thing "oh you NYkrs you have never heard of PIB, but its like KW only cheaper and less expensive and has less sharks", etc.
November 18, 200816 yr CDawg, about 5 people have mentioned before you that Put in Bay is more ideal during the summer - I GET IT. I was wrong. There is no need for you to reiterate what has already been said above you in every thread.
November 18, 200816 yr jesus? which jesus? i might know him. i grew up in lorain so you'll have to be more specific.
