Posted November 13, 200816 yr I got the opportunity to stroll around Wilmington one day after school. I am extremely passionate about the city and its future, and with all the media attention it has been getting lately, it might be helpful for others to see what Wilmington is aside from the DHL Airpark. Most are fairly confident that Wilmington will pull through this just like she did when the Clinton County Air Field moved out. It'll take a lot of hard work, good ideas and prayers... but I'm part of that group of optimists and I hope everyone else here is too! Enjoy!! 1997 addition to the Carnegie Library Good thing he won Cute houses! Beautiful house! "Sarah Palin - Very Scary" This house looks like it belongs on Wilmington College's campus When the pic was taken, the unfinished veterans memorial was already attracting a crowd. This is a bad pic... I fixed it on photoshop but I can't find the file... sorry! Looking up Main Street Great seafood stuffed pasta! And calzones! The newest shop in town, just opened up a couple weeks ago Where I ate dinner, Jen's Uptown Deli. It also seems to be the only place for interviews in Wilmington. Half the interviews for the whole DHL tableau have been there. Great little infill park Notice anything fishy about this building? The third floor in particular? Anything yet? Its fake! In constructing the Municiple Building, they tore down a Wilmington landmark, the Devoe Building. Moldings were made from the Devoe building trim and used in the design of the new building. So, in an effort to keep with the architectural integrety of the area and I would imagine a lack of funds, a fake 3rd floor was put on top. Backs of the buildings on Main Street... these backyards are even cuter in person! The Orange Frazier Press building Beautiful mural... and parking lot, for as beautiful parking lots can get All the people, and even the animals, are people from Wilmington and Clinton County. There was an auction for the spots on the painting and the money went to downtown revitalization Wilmington Friends Meeting. "They departed from the Quaker customs of "never a steeple and never a bell", Wilmington's Friend's church was consistent with Wilmington's leadership in leaving Quaker traditions of plain dress, plain talk, and no paid ministry" -A Walking Tour of the Commercial Historic District, Wilmington, Ohio Quakers and Catholics St. Columbkille Grotto General Denver Inn This house can be yours for 315K... complete with serpentine wall surrounding the property. This house is being refurbished! Since I was little I've watched it fall apart and someone is finally saving it! I saw the lights on inside it today for the first time... EVER. The Homeless Shelter and Annex Building The Old Hospital A close up on Hale Hospital. Dr. Hale's great-grandson had an art studio up top until the late 90's I believe. There is a sign on the door prohibiting entry because of lead paint... I don't know what the status of this building is, but I would love to see it restored! Kitty! Arboretum... I took some of my senior pics here 'New' Hospital, Clinton Memorial Hospital The Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center along with Cincinnati-based Champlin/Haupt Architects just recently received a design award for Health Care in Cincinnati Magazine’s sixth annual Interior Design Competition. http://softlightdesign.com/2008/10/cancer-center-wins-6th-annual-interior-design-award/ BONUS! Pictures from Wilmington High School's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream The set plus Puck I was Bottom the Weaver... Bottom acting as Pyramus Thanks! Comments or suggestions with my photography and on Wilmington are welcome! I'm certainly a novice and although I could, I haven't taken any photography classes.
November 13, 200816 yr Nice job! I've never seen Wilmington before, that I recall, but I'm impressed; it's a handsome town with a wealth of preserved historic buildings. I like your photos. The lighting is a little contrasty in places, but that's mostly an effect of the season and time of day, and you gotta take them when you can get there. If you can size them a little larger, the detail will come out better. A nominal 800x600 pixels works well with 1024x768 screen resolution that I think a lot of people are using; I usually size the larger dimension at 800 and let the smaller dimension fall where it will.
November 13, 200816 yr I enjoyed seeing Wilmington in person the last time I was in the city -- pre announcement of all the massive job losses. Vibrant downtown.
November 13, 200816 yr Well done! Love those murals. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
November 13, 200816 yr Very well documented, and a very sweet looking town. Surprisingly unspoiled downtown. Thanks for the tour!
November 13, 200816 yr I'm impressed! There were like 4 kids from my middle school that lived in Wilmington, and the only time I was there it was at night and I couldn't see anything. I definitely didn't think it would look like this though...I always imagined like farms and stuff because that's all you can see from the highway. That and Max and Ermas...
November 14, 200816 yr Thanks for all the comments! Nice job! I've never seen Wilmington before, that I recall, but I'm impressed; it's a handsome town with a wealth of preserved historic buildings. I was worried about the time of day I was taking the pictures because I knew that the resulting lighting would be a huge range in black and white levels. They made it really hard to mess with any of the pictures... so I just decided against it. Well done! Love those murals. I've got to agree with you! I'm impressed! There were like 4 kids from my middle school that lived in Wilmington, and the only time I was there it was at night and I couldn't see anything. I definitely didn't think it would look like this though...I always imagined like farms and stuff because that's all you can see from the highway. That and Max and Ermas... The view from 71 certainly does no justice to Wilmington, haha. Robert's Convention Center and the Holiday Inn there are somewhat impressive (and the casino would have been... completely out of place, lol), but after that you have a couple more miles until you get to Wilmington Wilmington. What middle school did you go to?
November 14, 200816 yr I went to Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (Montgomery/Sycamore Township) for 3 years before switching to Summit Country Day (Hyde Park).
November 14, 200816 yr Wow... didn't know people drove (or kept apartments) down in Cincy and lived in Wilmington. Okay... thats a lie... there is a family who goes to my church who have kids who attend Moeller. Its a shame there aren't more private schools in Wilmington. Wilmington Christian Academy is the only one... with a booming enrollment of 30 kids.
November 16, 200816 yr I had no idea it was such a nice town... I just recall being bored to death on that stretch of I-71... but you never know what treasures may wait beyond the horizon
November 17, 200816 yr Looks like a pleasant place...hopefully they can pull through the rough times they're going through right now.
November 17, 200816 yr As I have travelled I-71 between Cincy and Cleveland at excessive velocities hundreds of times for the last 25 years, it was inevitable that I would get a speeding ticket. I decided to drive back up to pay the fine in perrson in Wilmington one fine sunny day. I remember being surprised with how well kept and how impressive the architecture was in comparison to the typical small Ohio town. I even tried to chat up the lady who took stole my money about how much I liked her city. She reacted like a typical American that is completely devoid of any sense-of, or pride-in, place. She had this incredulous look on her face and looked at me like I had ten heads.

Making half that trip last night (to Cbus) I took the back way to keep from falling asleep (OH3-US22) and the popos just outside of Wilmington nailed me for 70 in a 55. I'll be making a donation to help through the rough couple of years to come.

I know exactly the type of person you're talking about... I hate them
November 18, 200816 yr Thank you both for your generous donations! Feel free to speed along 22 and 3 anytime, just so long as you are caught! ;) I even tried to chat up the lady who took stole my money about how much I liked her city. She reacted like a typical American that is completely devoid of any sense-of, or pride-in, place. She had this incredulous look on her face and looked at me like I had ten heads. That is really sad and disappointing. What happened to pride? pfft. Most likely a Clinton Massie person who wound up with a job in Wilmington... they're all haters. Talk to the right people... they won't shut up about how much they love Wilmington. Talk to me! :-D
