Posted November 17, 200816 yr Freedom Check: The new Capitol Visitor Center symbolizes the kind of nation we have become By Linda Hales, MetropolisMag.com Posted October 15, 2008 There is arguably no more potent image of democracy than the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol dome. With the opening of the massive underground Capitol Visitor Center planned for December 2, the hallowed place takes on the burden of new symbolism: a nation hunkered down. The $621 million, 580,000-square-foot complex, by RTKL Associates, is a marble bunker and then some. The project grew out of a modest plan to manage tourists after a gunman killed two Capitol Police officers in 1998. After September 11, 2001, the design morphed into a supersecure five-acre subterranean city, much of it off-limits to the public. Read more at http://www.metropolismag.com/cda/story.php?artid=3566

November 22, 200816 yr Wow, it reminds me of Hitler's Bunker under the Reich Chancellery in Berlin (Pre-1945 of course)!
November 23, 200816 yr I don't undertstand why everyones is hating on this project. It's not like they wanted to build a visitor center above ground in front of the Capitol because then it would ruin views of the capitol at street level. I think the visitor center looks fine and preserves views of the camp, while offering views of it from the center from underground.

July 18, 20222 yr this one is a pretty cool save! Former Brookland Bowling Alley Set to Become 320-Unit Development May 25, 2022 By UrbanTurf Staff "There have been any number of recent residential conversions in the DC region, but the area has yet to see a bowling alley conversion. Until now. UIP recently filed plans with DC's Historic Preservation Office for a 321-unit development at the site of the former Brookland bowling alley in DC's Brookland neighborhood. Brookland Lanes will be constructed around the historic building at 3726 10th Street NE." "Brookland Lanes’ big idea is to accentuate the existing historic building by designing a handsome yet understated new building around it," the plans stated. "The proposed new building’s architectural language is defined by a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco design principles in reference to the existing building." The new development, designed by ktgy, will have a pool and an outdoor amenity space on the roof of the existing historical building. UIP is also proposing a new public retail plaza at the corner of 10th Street NE and Michigan Avenue NE. The duckpin bowling alley at 3726 10th Street NE was in operation from 1939 to about 1950 when a fire severely damaged the building. The property was most recently occupied by the Atlantic Electric Supply Co. more: https://dc.urbanturf.com/articles/blog/former-brookland-bowling-alley-set-to-become-320-unit-development/19692 Rendering courtesy of Urban Turf

August 29, 20222 yr An ideal state for the future of suburbs in this country - an area of density surrounding frequent rapid transit stations that connect to downtown / job hubs. January 22, 20232 yr Talk of raising the height limit for buildings in Washington DC is bubbling up again. Mayor Bowser has proposed raising the limit from 130 ft. to 160 ft. It's part of her campaign to develop 20,000 units of housing for 'downtown' Washington. So many people are WFH that the city seem dead according to her. Not sure why the mayor wants to stop at 160 feet, but supposedly the extra two or three stories will make apartment buildings financially more feasible. https://www.axios.com/newsletters/axios-dc-cec45d4f-bed5-4222-a7bc-7f2ad9e4d5e3.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axioslocal_dc&stream=top Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

March 18Mar 18 The WaPo is taking notice of downtown office-to-apartment conversions in DC. They estimate the daytime working population of DC has fallen to 48% of the pre-Covid numbers. This is not to say there is a 52% vacancy rate. Lots of space is leased but empty. The big problem is the unaffordability of middle-class quality housing in the District and the killer hour-or-longer commutes required to find an affordable location. So, finally, developers are taking the Cleveland conversion approach. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/03/15/downtown-dc-bowser-crime-offices-vacancy/ Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

June 4Jun 4 The Wharf is a multibuilding redevelopment of a portion of DC's riverfront that used to be commercial fishing boats, seafood restaurants, and fresh catch sales "shacks". Now it's all sanitized and prettied up with apartment buildings. And it's jammed with people and fabulously popular, except with the people who used to go there to buy seafood. It is so successful that DC just paid off the almost $300 million in bonds they sold to finance it FIFTEEN YEARS EARLY.Maybe the Bedrock and Wolstein interests will take note. Size matters.
