WASHINGTON - Rep.-elect Steve Driehaus is learning what it's like to be a member of Congress this week, from the glamorous side to the more mundane.

Driehaus and his wife, Lucienne, had dinner with other new lawmakers Sunday at the ornate Library of Congress, followed by a nighttime tour of the U.S. Capitol with House Majority Leader Steney Hoyer, D-Md.

It's official.

You can call him Congressman Steve Driehaus now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., just administered the oath of office to the whole U.S. House at 2:25 p.m.

Driehaus, standing with his right hand raised and his three children sitting behind and beside him, said: "I do."

"Congressmen, you are now members," Pelosi said.

Driehaus explains no vote on bill

Since going to Washington in January, I have supported several important measures that will help an economy in crisis and improve a broken health care system.

The president has signed a law that will create or save 7,100 jobs in the 1st District, cut taxes, and begin to rebuild our infrastructure. Congress has passed legislation that will help families facing foreclosure stay in their homes, and provide health care coverage to an additional 120,000 Ohio children. When I voted "yes" on those bills, my first, most important consideration was whether I was voting in the interest of the 1st District. That will always be my top priority as your Congressman.

Steve Driehaus represents the 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Price Hill.
