Rock Hall’s $2 million ‘Interactive Garage’ set to wow visitors

By Troy L. Smith, Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Imagine standing inside rock and roll’s hallowed ground with the guitar sounds of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on The Water” blaring above your head.

Only it’s not just Ritchie Blackmore playing it. It’s you, learning his iconic riff in record time. That’s the magic of the Interactive Garage, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new interactive exhibit unlike anything the museum has ever put together.

The Interactive Garage, which opens to the public on July 1, allows visitors to play actual instruments by themselves, alongside friends or strangers at the museum. Trained professionals will be available on screen and in person to assist as you learn Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” on guitar, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” on drums or Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” on keyboard, among other classics.

I didn't realize this thing just opened. This Cuban band that performed at Party in the Park in Painesville a couple of weeks ago put it to good use

Rock Hall Ceremony to air live on HBO for first time in 2020

Updated 7:57 AM; Today 7:19 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It hasn’t even been a week since John Sykes was announced as the next Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and he’s already dropping bombs about next year’s Induction Ceremony in Cleveland.

It was announced earlier this week that Sykes, who is President of Entertainment Enterprises for iHeartMedia, will replace Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner as chairman of the New York-based institution, which handles the inductions, effective Jan. 1. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sykes revealed that next year’s ceremony will air live on HBO for the first time ever.

The Rock Hall has yet to announce a date or venue for next year’s ceremony. Though, April and Public Auditorium are usually safe bets, respectively. Thus, Cleveland would play host to the first live broadcast of the Rock Hall Inductions, putting a global audience’s eyes on the city in real time.

Okay. This is something the city and music venues needs to capitalize on immediately. I'm thinking an entire week of live shows and events leading up to the induction ceremony. Do it Cleveland!

I few things i've suggested:

  • Monthly rock concerted sponsored by the RRHF at rotating venues thought the city
  • At least two "monsters of rock" type concerts at CBS.  April and August.
  • various competitions that showcase city/county/regional/state talent. IE DJ DeathMatch.  Where two DJ battle over a course of 4/5 challenges reality style.
  • Rock "Chefs Table" where several chef would cook courses to a music themed dinner (RRHF benefit)
  • Rock the boat.  For summer, wrap a cruise boat like the good time, into a floating tour bus with programming.  pretty much a party cruise boat, targeting businesses for corporate functions
  • Celebrity music inspired suites at various hotels
  • Music inspired public art in every one of Cleveland neighborhoods.  with digital displays sponsored by artists, composers, DJ, Radios stations, etc.  For instance Kinsman Dazz.  These would be in places where they can be a step to future development
  • Do a big "live aid" type concert FROM Cleveland benefiting a Global Issue, like Global warming.
  • Trainspotters:  take all the seats out of 6/8 Cleveland Rapid Cars to make two trains.  Have a soul train and people have to come dressed as a certain soul train era; Disco Train, a late night train inspired by Traxx, where the train would run from 2:30am to 5:00am and play nothing buy disco; Train Car Karaoke - karaoke with jukebox filled with nothing music about trains.  The Soul and Disco trains would rotate, while the karaoke train would run in between rush hours as it's a general audience trains.

^Bring back the World Series of Rock (aka "monsters of rock"). Enough time has passed to forget any bad taste the that series left with some people.

World Series of rock and Monsters of Rock are two different things.   World Series was a locally produced show in 1970's Cleveland.  Monsters of Rock was a tour in the 80's.

Plus, like Riverfest, the problems that gave it an event ending bad reputation had little if anything to do with the event or its attendees.

Soundgarden over Kraftwerk?  Christ, this country is over.

lmao something GIF

uuugh.

ok here's who should go in.

in order.

kraftwerk (derp voters)

t rex (glam gods)

mc5 (not much there, but they effing invented the punk rock)

biggie (come on, maan don't make me tell you that!)

todd rundgren (top shelf producer)

the rest do not rate.

Doesn't getting inducted into a Hall of Fame basically revoke all your rock & roll cred? I say keep the actually-cool bands out of there. So definitely Soundgarden and not Kraftwerk.

Talking with one of the staff members during Best of CLE party, rumor is fan voting for Biggie is low because folks want to see him inducted when the ceremony is in NYC.

If you google any of the nominees Google gives you the option to vote daily on your choice of folks.

In 1981, my best friend Mike came running down my driveway with a record album in his arms. He banged on my door, entered and said, "Ken, you've got to hear this! These guys make ELO (just came out with their techie album "Time") sound like they're banging on rocks!"

The album was Kraftwerk's "Computer World." I bought my own copy and wore it out so fast I had to buy another.

Well IIRC they were the inspiration for that skit.

Sweet over T Rex, I would think.   A little more commercial and a lot more influential.   Desolation Boulevard was a good ten years ahead of its time.  Even recently, The Struts did Ballroom Blitz on a soundtrack and The Regrettes did a cover of Fox On The Run on British TV.   Their lead singer's dad wasn't born yet when that song was a hit.

My brother had one of their early albums fron the 70s. It contained Autobahn which was pretty cool even though I didn't understand the German lyrics.

IIRC, Autobahn got a lot of play on WMMS and/or M105.

My dad had the full album (came out in 1975), and it had lyrics for Autobahn on the back.

This rock n roll HoF ceremony was one of the most star studded I can remember. On your of there people actually going into the HoF there were performers  including Taylor Swift, Eminem, jLo, Paul McCartney, Jennifer Hudson, and Christina Aguilera, and introducers such as Drew Barrymore, Dr.Dre, Lionel Richie, and Dave Chapel. Didn’t get to watch but plan to.

Rock and roll is an attitude, and covers a whole lot of different musical genres.  And Saturday nights show was one of the best shows I've ever attended.  What a night

"Rock N Roll" transcends many music genre's, activities and types of entertainment.  The event, Cleveland and the Museum all shined.

People I know, personally and in the business, year over year, are majorly impressed with the city and the event.

I hated the proposed expansion. Hopefully they went back to the drawing board.

Construction is still set for sometime in '22. About 73m of the 100m dollar project has been raised.

The green plaza next to the Science Center has been funded with a 2m dollar gift from the GGF. Should begin this summer.

I like the addition of the screens. A Rock & Roll museum shouldn't be static. It should be kinetic with audio and videos of the performers. It also adds energy to what is too often a quiet entrance to the Hall. It's often the little things that create a positive vibe.

The sign is already up

Agree. Also it's time to activate those dead spaces along the water with...anything. It's always been so sterile.

Bigger picture: I need to see better, more walkable connections. It's going to require a coordinated, well thought-out effort by all stakeholders, not just the Rock Hall.

We shall see.

Effectively she seems to be saying that she doesn't consider herself to be a rock 'n' roll artist. Though her mention of possibly recording a rock album in the future is interesting. It does seem like the rock Hall often uses the most broad definition of rock possible. I'm not making any judgement on that, but it would be interesting if what forces the Rock Hall to narrow its definition is other artist self selecting out of the genre.

As far as the additions, screen should be nice, but I really hope they do work with the landbridge and other developments rather than rushing to get it done.

Young people today don't like to think of music in "genres". They kind of look at it as a whole but recognize the influence of particular genres on the song as a whole.

absolutely and yet another problem the boomer driven rrhof faces.

the bigger problem is of course, their rock-n-roll is and has been dead for quite awhile now.

hot take maybe for some, but i stand by it lol -- and it doesn't mean the museum isnt cool, because it is and they can still do a lot more with it (like hold big concerts).

The really should consider renaming the museum.

Agreed.  They used to say Rock and Roll will never die, but it looks like it has died.  Maybe Pop Music Hall of Fame would be more appropriate.

It really hasn't died.   Younger bands like The Struts, The Regrettes, and in Italy Måneskin are doing a credible job.
