Cool! I have never knew of the World Seeies of Rock. Makes sense that it was a Belkin production, they were big time. What a crazy history!

Grrrrr.... Modell

" ...Art Modell, the head of Stadium Corp., stated there would be no more World Series of Rock concerts held at the stadium."

I made it to a WSOR show where Aerosmith broke up for the first time after two SOs got in a fight.  AC/DC with Bon Scott singing was on the underbill, along with Journey, and there was an unannounced opening band, a German group making its US debut.  People like to minimize how big Ted Nugent was because of his politics, byt he co-headlined with Aerosmith.

MLB made them quit using "World Series" so the Monsters of Rock was during the mid to late 80s at the Akron Rubber Bowl.  Day 2 in 1988 was one of Metallica's best sets ever, we were 50 feet from center stage.  Aerosmith played later.

To be fair, that particular group of fans did a number on the turf.

Yeah, I know. Just wanted to evoke the spirit of hate (for better or worse) upon the man ;)

I was there. Probably not far from your position.  Aerosmith was not on that bill it was Van Halen, Scorpions and Dokken.  And oh yeah, who could forget Kingdom Come (except everyone).

Yes it was Van Halen with Sammy Hagar I was there as well.

I was at the 1978 one...2 months before I was born.  My mom said they had to let her in through a side entrance because she couldn't fit through the turnstile.

I actually liked them and they played very early, so that's how we got so close.

I could have swore Aerosmith played, there may have been alcohol involved.

The year we went to see Bulletboys (yes, Bon Jovi headlined lol) and a friend smuggled in vodka under his baseball cap.  That day we learned Luksosowa melts ziploc plastic.  We got it into a pop cup just in time.

Bulletboys epically dissed Winger by circulating in the crowd during their set.

^^Smooth up in Winger!  Classic!

Kingdom Come is better than Zeppelin

Not to sound like a Winger apologist,  but I saw them at Germaine Ampitheatre in C-bus in 2004. They sounded pretty good. The headliners were Cinderella and Poison. My friend got me free tix and backstage passes...because otherwise I’m not paying $2 for that show lol.  I think I heard 15 hit songs that night! Since the rock hall (and the industry) loves its commercial artists I have to wonder if Poison won’t get some consideration.

If any of you have the chance to seee Poison live - do it.

I admit I liked Poison when they first came out, and the thing is for every band like them that hit big 5 or 10 other metal bands got signed, which meant much more then than it does now.

As I've said elsewhere, my daughter's mom had heard of Poison even though she was 5 when "Talk Dirty To Me" came out.

Winger wasn't bad but their image never quite recovered from Stewart Stevenson's T shirt.

A friend's band didn't use the word "smooth" in their cover, but it didn't make it much dirtier LOL

"Seventeen" was the last popular song about underage girls that I can think of.

"Seventeen" was the last popular song about underage girls that I can think of.

Technically “Into the Night” by Benny Mardones though written in 1980, it charted in 89, a year after “17.”

Oh, that's how that worked? I thought Into The Night came out when it was written.

edit: oh it was a hit both times. Good song.

It’s interesting. Apparently some dj somewhere just kept playing the track for years. And luckily for all of us the song finally caught on, and now we can all be uncomfortable about it!

The world smites Winger once again.

It all started with Stewart wearing their T-Shirt.

It's been that long since R. Kelly had a hit?

Mardones was born in Cleveland, it turns out.

Are the R. Kelly songs specifically about underage girls or just written about underage girls he knew (and/or peed on) without mentioning their age?

He was forced out of town by Michael Stanley, no doubt.

No they were really bad before that.  I scored a free Winger poster in 1996 when a local record store went bankrupt and came by and threw hundreds of records and posters onto the green in front of our dorm.  Hair metal was at its nadir in the mid-late 90s, as was vinyl.

In 1997 I went with some guys to a club outside Kansas City called Roadhouse Ruby's to see LA Guns.  The place was in a strip mall.  Their tour bus was parked outside -- it had fringe on it and everything else you'd expect from an old tour bus.  We got to the door and they wouldn't let us in because we were under 21.

I couldn't find any info on the club via google other than this link to a 1998 Anthrax set list:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/anthrax/1998/roadhouse-rubys-north-kansas-city-mo-23dd641f.html

Oh, how the mighty fell in the mid/late 90s.

I actually hung out with Kip Winger for an hour or two about 15 years ago. He explained that all he did about that whole thing was put his hands up in the air saying, "What can you do?"

For those that care, Cake's tour page listed InCuya as of a few days ago. I just checked today and it's no longer listed.

How Cleveland built the Rock Hall

The story of how the Rock Hall landed in Cleveland. Only 3037 You Tube views, saw it on Apple TV. Directly from the people that were involved. From the beginning with the USA poll, to IM Pie’s reaction to the 1980’s lakefront, and how it almost did not happen. A must see for Clevelanders and Clevelanders at heart.

i wondered how well the rrhof was doing attendance wise and its seems its doing pretty good. it was 568K in 2017, up from 2016. for comparison the cle museum of art gets 700K visitors a year. the most visited museum in the world is as you might guess the louvre at 8M+ and in the usa its the met at 7M+.

i wish the rrhof would sponsor big festival shows at the stadium like the world series of rock. or at least one every summer. its a lost opportunity. i know it probably didnt make sense to do it for quite awhile, but the tide has decidedly turned back to live music and big festivals again like coachella for example. performing is the only way to make steady big $ these days. maybe it will happen at some point because who is better connected to arrange a big summer concert event than the hall?

^Happy to report they are this year:

This can be posted a few places, but let's start here. So... GREAT TO HEAR THIS NEWS!  Long overdue.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, AEG partner for downtown Cleveland InCuya music festival in August

Updated 11:12 AM; Posted 10:59 AM

By Chuck Yarborough, The Plain Dealer [email protected]

CLEVELAND, Ohio - At long last the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is partnering with others to bring a music festival to Cleveland.

The inaugural InCuya festival will be Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26, at Malls B and C in downtown Cleveland. Presented by concert promoter AEG Presents, in partnership with the Rock Hall, the city of Cleveland and Destination Cleveland, the festival "will celebrate the origins, diversity and evolution of rock,'' according to the release from AEG Presents.

The festival will be "a cross-genre, multigenerational, collaborative and uniquely Cleveland event with a mix of national recording artists, complemented by local artists and Cleveland's vibrant city center,'' the release said.

For years, fans have been calling for the Rock Hall to stage some sort of festival, something in addition to the biennial induction ceremony at Cleveland Public Hall. And really, that makes perfect sense.

It's surprising, to be honest, that it's taken this long.

InCuya: Cleveland finally gets a summer music festival thanks to Rock Hall and AEG

Updated 12:07 PM; Posted 12:07 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's not the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Music Festival," but it's close. More importantly, Cleveland will finally have a major summer music fest to call its own.

Concert promoter AEG and the newly formed Cleveland Concert Company announced today that it was teaming up with the Rock Hall to bring a two-day music festival to Cleveland. InCuya will take place Aug. 25-26 on Malls A & B downtown. The full lineup, ticket prices and on-sale information will be announced in early April, just as the city prepares to host the 2018 Rock Hall inductions in Cleveland.

AEG -- which produces major music festival around the United States, including Coachella in California and Rock on the Range in Columbus --  is touting InCuya as a celebration of "the origins, diversity and evolution of rock." A news release promoting the event says it will feature a mix of national and local recording artists.

"Cleveland has been waiting a long time for its own unique mainstream music festival, and we're thrilled to deliver what promises to be an incredible experience to the city that's widely regarded as the epicenter of rock n roll," said AEG Senior Vice President Joe Litvag.

although i dk why its on the mall instead of in the stadium — smaller acts maybe? like kind of a lets see what happens approach?

Probably accurate, plus depending on the deal with the city (which I can't imagine how incredibly difficult they are to deal with), they may also get a chance to keep some of the food & beverage concessions, which they wouldn't get at the stadium.  That's where the real money is!

In light of the HOF inductions, let's look back at some of the city's history in Rock & Roll....

My comment on today's story:

Amazing work and story, John!

I'm am still shocked Record Rendezvous still sits empty with it's historical signifacance and location next to many Cleveland attractions. How has the Rock Hall not bought it and restored it or made it into a Rock Hall Annex?

It almost reminds me of the first Starbucks store location that sits next to Pike's Place Market in Seattle. It was restored to look like it did in the early 1970s. People will come down to the area for the market and park but wait in line to buy coffee at the first Starbucks. My idea - tourists could still buy music at a restored Record Rendezvous, while it is also turned into gift shop/museum/ special event space. Is there even a historical marker there? Or eligible for "historic tax credits?"...seems pretty historic to me, tied to Cleveland's history and identity.

I typed this while drinking out of my souvenir "First Starbucks Mug" from the Seattle store.

Heck, the Rock Hall should buy the entire block as the Rock Hall Annex and make RR the showpiece.

RIP I.M. Pei. A life well lived. I really like the Rock Hall picture they selected for this article. It clearly shows how the design was inspired by a record player.  Excellent architecture.

Erieview? Not so much. Can’t nail them all.

I don’t understand how an article can be written about the architecture of the Rock Hall without mentioning the inspiration of a record arm on the design. I think that’s the coolest feature of the building. I do agree with most of Litt’s critiques in this article, but the lakefront location is also very nice. Quick poll - do you prefer the actual lakefront location or the original proposed riverfront / direct view of terminal tower location?

Article: Remembering I.M. Pei as designer of the Rock Hall - not a masterpiece, but still pretty great

How many people on this forum are old enough to remember the phone polls to get the Rock Hall?   Just asking.

I never liked it at Tower City because of the Neimans design and the Rock Hall would have taken a 2nd tier to everything else connected to Tower City.  I wish it was West of it's location so that a Music Venue and archives could have been designed and built with it.

Rock Hall’s $2 million ‘Interactive Garage’ set to wow visitors

By Troy L. Smith, Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Imagine standing inside rock and roll’s hallowed ground with the guitar sounds of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on The Water” blaring above your head.

Only it’s not just Ritchie Blackmore playing it. It’s you, learning his iconic riff in record time. That’s the magic of the Interactive Garage, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new interactive exhibit unlike anything the museum has ever put together.

The Interactive Garage, which opens to the public on July 1, allows visitors to play actual instruments by themselves, alongside friends or strangers at the museum. Trained professionals will be available on screen and in person to assist as you learn Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” on guitar, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” on drums or Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” on keyboard, among other classics.

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/06/rock-halls-2-million-interactive-garage-set-to-wow-visitors.html

A lot of people play Smoke on the Water the wrong way, with 5ths instead of 4ths, don't fingerpick and try to do it all with the root on the A string.

Sabotage only has one chord.

Does the rock hall have some sort of space where kids can play the instruments?  Unfortunately a lot of kids aren't allowed to "touch" instruments, if they're lucky enough to grow up in a house where somebody plays.

With all of the EDM and rap apps on phones, it's hard to imagine that many kids will say hey I'm going to spend the next 4 years of my life practicing guitar so I can impress girls at the talent show.

^ i dk about the hall, but in pop music news since he died it has come to light that prince donated a boatload of money and instruments to lorain for just that purpose. apparantly somebody from lorain worked with prince and brought it to his attention they were looking for musical instruments for kids and for help.

nobody really knows how much money prince gave away to charity except that it was quite a bit and that he always researched and hand picked who he gave it to.

With how scammy and spammy the Google Play store has gotten, girls will probably be afraid that he'll send malware to them
