That article is poorly written, but it does point out exactly what I was going to say.

"Warwick certainly isn’t the first person to suggest that Rock Hall change its name to match its inclusive nature. But it’s not as simple as it may seem. If the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame changes its name to the “Music Hall of Fame,” do you induct Beethoven, Charlie Parker, and Hans Zimmer? If it becomes the “Pop Music Hall of Fame,” do you kick out artists like Tom Waits, Dr. John or The Stooges?"

There's already a country Hall of Fame. There's a Blues Hall of Fame, if there isn't one for jazz there should be. Genres aren't scientific concepts so the lines between them are blurry and overlapping, but they clearly still have use. If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can't define Rock then what does it even mean to be inducted?

I think a lot of this problem could be addressed if they stopped inducting any artist still making music. Hall of Fames should honor people after they've completed their body of work. Not during. Give their discography 20 years after their retirement to see how it ages. See if it influences future artists. The second best selling artist of the 1950's was Pat Boone, We can now clearly see he doesn't deserve to get in, nor is he a rocker, but would that have been obvious to someone at the time? Idk.

Really what defines who is and who isn't a "rocker" is who the next generation of self-defined rock musicians cite as their influences.

Were you expecting a well-written article on Cleveland.com?

One problem with the rock hall is their obsession with inducting a dozen or so artists every year.  That may have been fine in the early years, but it is not necessary now.  I assume the reason for inducting such a large number is so the induction ceremony is not just a couple of pot-bellied, gray-haired artists, but rather a huge event with the video airing on HBO and various other platforms.

For anyone who hasn’t gone to the Rock Hall inductions, it’s one of the best concerts from a music perspective one could ever see. This is coming from a guy that has been to over 700 concerts in my lifetime (52). I was lucky enough to have an older brother that let me tag along with his friends to see live music, starting with my first show at the age of 13 to see the J.Giles Band.
With that being said, regardless of how they include what bands in their vetting process, the lineups they put on in front of the Rock Hall In the summer and then the Rock Hall inductions are incredible. The Rock Hall staff is amazing.

speaking of the j. geils band, the rnr hof would do well to get in touch with charlie daniels aka the famous master blaster emcee of boston and his massive collection of 1960s-70s rnr pix:

Photographer’s 3,200 Undeveloped Film Rolls Hold History of Rock ‘n’ Roll

Photographer Charles Daniels has been photographing famous rockers like Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix, The Who’s Pete Townshend, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and others since the late 1960s. However, tens of thousands of his photos have never been seen — they are sitting in roughly 3,200 rolls of undeveloped film in his Boston home.

I was reading this article and an image appeared courtesy of PAU for their design of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame expansion.   It appears more refined than previously shown.  I am hopeful this is what is planned

rock hall expansion.jpg

I hope they go back to the drawing board.

The front of the rock hall is iconic. Let's not ruin it with an ugly addition.

  • 1 month later...

It would be nice if they could do something with that ugly backside.  Maybe add some reflective glass panels that light up at night with various colors.  The top floor of the tower is a waste.  Perhaps they can add some windows and convert it to a lounge.  I.M. Pei (aka I M Well Paid) should have tweaked the design a bit when they moved to the harbor.

It's an improvement over the last design. I wonder if they have given any thought to how this would/could interact with any potential land bridge proposal. There's a lot of potential for synergy between the two ideas, so I hope that is being considered and that backroom talks are taking place.

Should this conversation be in the development forum? It's definitely construction related.

@KJPI'm looking forward to the NeoTrans article on this, which I'm sure will be superior to Cleveland.com

This should be posted in the developments section. Congrats to Mr. Litt on his scoop.

i only voted for oasis because i like noel’s high flying birds band, but also because oasis were hell raisers, so i guess that counts. also i picked frampton for the opposite reason, he’s just such a nice guy you cant help but like him, plus he had a long career.

i would have voted for ozzy & sinead, but i figured why? they are a lock.

also carey is a probably a lock unfortunately given her dopey loyal fandom. the rest of the winners i dk. 🤷‍♂️

Oasis should be an absolute lock, as they were massively influential (and commercially successful) in probably the second most important rock and roll market, historically speaking.

Indeed, "Britpop" was as much rock and roll as it was pop and was bigger in the UK in the 90s than here.

Didn’t take photo (I know 😕), but drove by there today and saw that the construction has started.

I will post updates from above in the development thread as I see noticeable change. One pro I guess of working in Erieview tower.

Not sure who is watching the Rock Hall Inductions on ABC right now, but man what an incredible event this is.  Never doubt that Cleveland knows how to put on a world class event.  Everyone who is anyone came to

Cleveland to celebrate music. Its crazy to see them all in one place having a great time. The Rock Hall is something we don't embrace enough. It could be something that drives development on the lake front more than it has. The state especially should recognize this, but Cleveland has too many haters in Columbus who are willing to help with this.

Oh the partisans of each of the three major cities enjoy sniping at the other two.   There's a reason that's strictly limited in these fora.

Agreed in principle, Cleveland definitely knows how to pull off a major event.   And with the Rock Hall, Playhouse Square, the Orchestra, and the Art Museum we punch way above our weight culturally.

I'm as pro-Cleveland as they come, but I hate to break it to you--other than the venue and local stagehands, the event is completely produced out of New York.    NY production staff, video, sound, lights etc.

WIth this in mind, I would say that the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse is one of the finest in the country, both from the facilities level and operations.   The venue definitely deserves much congratulations.
