I don't know what the status of the project is.  It's been in talks for about ten years.  The main problem is that everything was gutted years ago so it's just a shell.  It's also in a pretty weird location, but one that faces I-71 so there will be great visibility if they do do something.

The other thing the location has in its favor is that it is within very easy walking distance (just 2-3 blocks but out of sight of) of a potential light rail spot on the CL&N line at Xavier University.  So that could really help it as a tourist attraction in the future if both things end up happening.

  • I was there.  THE highlight of the night was Eminem doing "Rock the Bells" with LL Cool J.    LL also made sure to acknowledge the debts that hip hop owes rock n roll for the use of samples etc.   Ver

Rock Hall lets Ohio Sen. George Voinovich know he rocks, renames atrium in his honor

Published: Friday, September 03, 2010, 11:57 PM

John Soeder, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — George Voinovich's musical tastes run more toward polka, but that didn't stop the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum from renaming its atrium in honor of the Ohio senator.

Voinovich was feted with a VIP reception Friday evening at the museum, followed by a Rock Hall Ball to celebrate the landmark institution's 15th anniversary.

As mayor of Cleveland in the 1980s and governor of Ohio in the '90s, Voinovich was instrumental in getting the Rock Hall built here.

Terry Stewart, president and chief executive of the hall, called Voinovich "a tenacious supporter of the museum."

Sporting a Rock Hall T-shirt and denim jacket, Voinovich gave credit to his children -- George, Betsy and Peter -- for convincing him that the hall would make "a significant prize" for the city.

Rock Hall designates New Orleans studio landmark

The Associated Press

Updated 6:07 PM Monday, September 27, 2010

CLEVELAND — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has designated a former New Orleans music studio as a rock 'n' roll landmark.

The Rock Hall in Cleveland said Monday that the unveiling of the marker at the former J&M Studios site kicked off the annual Ponderosa Stomp music festival in New Orleans on Friday.

The Rock Hall says J&M Studios helped give birth to rock 'n' roll with recording sessions featuring pioneers such as Fats Domino and Little Richard. The studio owned and operated by Cosimo Matassa produced records from 1947 to 1956.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees Announced

By BEN SISARIO

Bon Jovi, the Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Tom Waits and LL Cool J are among the 15 artists nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Also on the list: Chic, Dr. John, J. Geils Band, Darlene Love, Lauro Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis.

There are still tons of great rock groups out there that they never even consider. Thats what I have a problem with the Rock Hall. And that Cleveland doesn't get the induction every year. At least we finally got it to be here every 3rd year.

Bon Jovi or The "Beastie Boys" get in before Chicago or The Doobie Brothers and so many other greats..  Its just pathetic and so political. Laura Nero..now there is some class. If you've never seen the Doobs in concert...these guys can still jam at 60!

My dad will forever be disappointed unless Chicago gets in. They are his all time favorite

I still don't understand the selection process. I get they're expanding their focus to most likely draw to a larger audience, and I think that's a good thing. But man, Chicago is a glaring exception. For that matter, Rush should be in before many of these other bands. And if Bon Jovi is in, why for the love of god, isn't KISS?

And if Bon Jovi is in, why for the love of god, isn't KISS?

Well god willing the snooty rock critics that kept KISS out, will have their way with Bon Jovi too. I think RUSH's problem is that you either love them or you think they are horribly over rated. There really isn't much of a middle ground.

I don't get the criteria either...

And what about RATT? "Round and round" is the best Van Halen song ever made :)

The Rock Hall will forever be incomplete until Black Flag is in.

I'll agree that as far as enjoyment of Rush, you're either a lover or hater of them. But based on sheer musical ability I can't imagine anyone thinking they aren't one of the most proficient trios ever to get together (well, ok, they carry Lifeson, but the Lee and Peart are great).

Black_Flag_-_Slip_It_In.jpg

One of the best album covers ever! definately should be in the RNRHOF.

AJ let me guess which RUSH camp you fall into? Hmmm. Yeah but your point about musical ability gets at the criteria for selection? Is it ability? Influence? Sales and charts? I don't get it. A long career definately helps. But Bon Jovi? What did they bring to the table besides some really bitchin' frosted hair and pretty faces?

Just a lot of tail kissing to material that should not even be in there in the first place.  The selection process was explained to me once in a lengthy email and it was all double talk. I didn't buy it. It was more a rationale to kiss ass to someone who wants to bully their way to the front of the line. That's how I saw/interpreted it.

Musical tastes are subjective to begin with. It's not like you can quantify success, the same way you could with a football/ baseball/ basketball player. I would presume critical acclaim, cumulative record sales, and the band's influence on a musical style (how many bands list an inductee as an influence). But all of that is tough to quantify.

I'd be more interested in learning why certain bands haven't been included to get a sense of what they're not looking for.

^Agreed.

http://rockhall.com/inductees/induction-process/

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists%u2019 contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation%u2019s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 500 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

Whatever that means...It would be interesting to see how the HOF inductees show up in the Pandora algorithm. They should be the center of huge hubs in my thinking...

So we get next years induction?

Why the heck isn't Joan Jett in there?

bah!

And by this ideology...many are not in the hall that should have been a long time ago.

At least they don't discriminate for using performance enhancing drugs.  Thank you, thank you... I will be here with lame jokes all week.

I've lived within driving distance to Cleveland my entire life (25 years).  I've lived within walking distance of the RRHOF for the last 2.  I've never been and will never go until Rush is inducted.  How a band that is so influential and groundbreaking (especially for a 3 piece) doesn't even get considered is beyond me.  They'll take Bon Jovi, but they shutter at the thought of Rush.  What the hell is wrong with these people?

LL COOL J is nominated

^As he should be.  He was one of the first to bridge a gap between rock and rap.  I am not sure he should get in, but certainly worthy of a look.  He would also raise the question on whether his influence over the general culture (fashion, acting, etc), apart from his music, should play any role in the analysis.

I think there are several more important ROCK AND ROLL bands that need to get in before he does

The whole institution is a sham...

There is no secret to the section process.  It's not about what you know.  Or how good your band is.

It's about who you know.  And if you ain't in bed with Jan Wenner, your chances go down.

It was decided long ago that the RRHOF would not be limited to "Rock and Roll" bands.  Just look at the list of the first few inductee groups and you will find that it includes Ray Charles, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, The Tempatations, and Stevie Wonder.  Also inducted are Bob Marley, Al Green, The Jackson 5, Parliament, The O'Jays, EW&F, Grandmaster Flash, and Run DMC.  Inductees also include pure personalities such as Alan Freed.  With the 25 year rule, you can expect more and more nominees like LL Cool J.

Their time signatures are too complex, thus making for awkward toe tapping.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to feature women in rock exhibit</b>

If your frame of reference for women in rock and roll only stretches as far back as, say, mid-1980s Madonna, you're about to get a chance to experience a highly entertaining history lesson.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland announced today that it will open an exhibit highlighting the role women have played in rock and roll, from its roots to today.

Just realized this started a new page, dont miss the new article I posted on the last page

Also we should try to bring back the World Series of Rock in a joint effort with the rock hall. Have the big names all do a major concert here every year and have them after the show sign autographs and stuff in the RRHOF and sell expensive tickets to get in. I doubt the rock hall would mind having a big event where they would benefit financially.

First round of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Walk of Fame plaques unveiled outside Cleveland's Public Auditorium

Walk this way, rock 'n' roll fans.

The first plaques in Cleveland's new Walk of Fame were unveiled during a news conference Wednesday afternoon outside Public Auditorium, where the sold-out Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Saturday, April 14.

Downtown Cleveland Alliance ambassadors removed large wood boards to reveal sidewalk markers for a dozen members of the Rock Hall's incoming Class of 2012, including the Beastie Boys, Guns N' Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

^I'm kind of disappointed the way they simply laid these in concrete.  I would have liked to see some nice brick pavers surrounding these as part of the sidewalk rebuild outside of Public Auditorium.

I think any other foundation would take away from the plaque themselves.  The plaque is suppose to be the "star" not what it's laid in.  If there were some sort of unique paver it might "compete" with the plaques.  People will come down just to take pictures of the plaques and IMO simple foundation works best.

I don't know if I like that they will be scattered throughout downtown. I'm thinking the plaques could be sort of a must see destination themselves if they were all in one place or along the same street Hollywood Boulevard style. That said however, having them in groups scattered around town will give tourists a reason to visit other parts of the city.

I like that idea, although I was under the impression that East Ninth Street would be the spine of this project.  Say I'm going to the RNR hall of fame and I'm a Bootsie Collins Fan.  I'll most likely want to take a picture of his plaque.  And if the plaque is located in a prime spot it increases activity to/from the RNR HOF to/from the location of the plaque.

I think the plan is to have a sort of "map" -- Therefore, tourists will not only be visiting the RNRHOF, they will be scavenging the city, looking for the plaques they came to see. It's a genious idea to connect the lakefront tourist crowd with the rest of the city.

I like the idea of putting them near the convention center and casino, so people who are here on business can do a "Oh, yeah.  I forgot the R&R HOF was here, I should visit"

If that is your thinking then that is EXACTLY why they should be in several places not just near the CC/MM or Casino.

Cleveland Revs Up for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Festivities

The Midwestern city prepares for the economic and social impact of 10 days as the center of the rock world

Steve Schimoler, owner and chef at Cleveland, Ohio's Crop Bistro & Bar, has been working hard to create the perfect rock-themed menu for his restaurant, with the hopes of attracting some of the rock stars, record industry executives, and music fans who will flood into town for the 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony later this month. He is particularly proud of a cocktail he calls the "Sugaree" (shaken not stirred) – in honor of the Rock Hall's new Grateful Dead exhibit.

Schimoler is one of the many Cleveland business owners eager to contribute to the 10-day celebration of rock & roll that began April 5th, and culminates with the induction ceremony at Public Hall on April 14th.

As Valarie McCall, Cleveland's chief of government affairs and a member of board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, puts it, "Everyone is catching that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony fever."

For a Midwestern city that has been hit hard by the country's economic recession, mortgage crisis, and, of course, the departure of LeBron James, it is difficult to overstate the positive impact such a celebration has on the economy, culture, and morale of Cleveland, with inductees like the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N' Roses, The Faces, and many other celebrities coming to town.

Rock week shines light on downtown Cleveland businesses new and old

CLEVELAND - There are 4,000 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland and University Circle. Positively Cleveland said they're all sold out for this Saturday night and nearly full for the weekend.

This week's induction ceremony will generate more than $13 million for the downtown Cleveland economy and create positive global media attention that would have cost $20 million to buy, according to Positively Cleveland.

About 61,000 people work in the hotel, restaurant and tourism industry in Cuyahoga County and more than 163,000 in northeast Ohio.

The excitement around Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction week will attract tourists from around the country and the world to Cleveland businesses. Mike Rubin hopes some of them will discover his landmark Cleveland music store. Prospect Music opened next to the Loop Lounge in 1941.

I just got tickets to the ceremony!!! Still no word on if the Beastie Boys will perform.  Man, I sure hope they do.

I took a peak at what the tickets are selling for on craigslist, ebay, etc but the prices were nowhere near what I would be willing to sell my tickets for.  Can't wait and should be a memorable show even without GnR performing (also hoping for some Beastie Boys).

Get pictures wherever you can...inside, outside, street scenes etc.

^I would if I could, but it doesn't sound like I can.  The website says:

"Can I bring a camera or video camera to the Inductions?

All cameras, photography, recording and filming are strictly prohibited. "

I don't want to bring my camera only to be turned away at the door and have to walk back to the car.  Although, I do wonder if they are doing a red carpet.  I think last time they did.

Red carpet would be cool
